Happy Thursday Hivers!
Sad face, always tired, no excitement, that’s how I would describe my mother at the beginning of December. Why? Let me tell you the story.
Back in 2020, doctors found a kidney stone about 1 cm in size. But since she didn’t feel any pain, she didn’t bother taking medicine or even increasing her water intake. She simply ignored it. And because she never complained about any discomfort, we didn’t take any action either.
Actually, she’s supposed to have a general check-up once a year, but whenever we reminded her, she never paid attention. Until one day, the results showed that her kidney stone had grown.
How did we find out?

In May this year, she started complaining about severe pain in her knee whenever she walked. My mother has a very high pain tolerance, so if she complains, it means the pain is really serious. So we immediately brought her to the doctor for a check-up. The doctor ordered an X-ray of her knee and also requested additional laboratory tests, including a urinalysis.
The lab results showed that her knee X-ray was fine, but her urinalysis revealed a very high bacteria count. She was prescribed antibiotics, and after seven days, her urine was checked again. Unfortunately, there was no progress, the bacteria count was still high. The doctor was puzzled and requested a kidney ultrasound. That’s when they discovered a 6.3 cm kidney stone. To get a more accurate picture, the doctor ordered a CT scan, which confirmed that she had a large kidney stone.
My mother was then referred to a kidney specialist. The first doctor told us that the type of stone she had couldn’t be dissolved. There are different types of kidney stones, some can be dissolved with medication, while others cannot and require surgery. In my mother’s case, surgery was needed.
We consulted another doctor just to be sure, but the second doctor said the same thing, the type of stone she had wouldn’t dissolve with medicine. And because it was already big, she needed an urgent operation.
While we were still deciding what to do, her doctor prescribed medicine to try dissolving the stone and monitored her condition. She took the medication from June to August, and in September she went for another ultrasound to check for progress. Instead of shrinking, the stone grew from 6.3 cm to 6.5 cm. The doctor changed her medication again, hoping it would help, because my mother still wasn’t ready to decide on surgery.
By November 2025, we were all getting worried because the stone might keep growing. Our worry increased when the doctor told us that her left kidney was no longer functioning due to the large stone, and if we waited any longer, her right kidney might also be affected, and that would mean dialysis. So my siblings and I met and decided that she should undergo surgery in the first week of December.
Actually, my mother has always been very active in church. When the doctor told her she needed surgery, she prayed the rosary constantly, asking for a miracle, even though she had already been told that the type of stone she had could not be dissolved. She kept praying, placing her hand over the part of her body that hurt, believing wholeheartedly that God would give her a miracle.
Two days ago, we went for her laboratory tests as preparation for the operation. My mother was extremely depressed because she really didn’t want to undergo surgery. She stopped talking, stopped smiling, and just stayed in bed. We, her children, became very worried, so we talked about it. We decided that since she was already showing signs of depression, maybe we shouldn’t push through with the surgery just yet, afraid that something might happen to her emotionally.
Three hours after the ultrasound, the results were released. And you know what? The power of prayer is real. Maybe it was her unwavering faith, her constant pleading for a miracle, because the ultrasound showed that her kidney stone had decreased in size. We compared her previous lab results with the current one, and guess what? From 6.5 cm, it became only 0.8 cm. And her urinalysis, which used to show an “abundant” amount of bacteria, now showed only a “moderate” level.
My mother was overwhelmed with joy, and she cried as soon as she saw the results. Sometimes, miracles come quietly, right when we feel most hopeless. When faith is stronger than fear, even the impossible begins to change. And truly, my mother’s story reminds me that nothing is ever too hard for God.We’re also truly thankful that we were spared from the expenses, because the cost would have been quite high if the surgery had pushed through.
