The weather is still allowing brief periods of forward progress on the cabin, I made peanut podi, and the river has been raging lately.
Floor Is Almost Done 🚧
We haven't run out of wood to steal from the highway shack yet, and the floor is nearly replanked. Sanding, staining, and varnishing will come later when all the woodwork is done. With the price of all my crypto investments in the gutter right now, we've certainly picked a very bad time to take on a crypto-funded project like this.
Whitewater Training 🌊
Monkey-B and I have been going to the river to do whitewater safety lessons when possible. I used to have a Swiftwater Rescue Technician License many years ago, and I feel more confident allowing the girls to go the river without me so long as they know what to do should they get taken by the current.
Srey-Yuu, Monkey-B, and I floated a section of the river, where the current is strong, and I use this to teach them how to avoid foot entrapment and being caught by strainers like tree branches. It's all about going feet-first on your back, that's the safest way to swim whitewater. On this day the water was moving too fast for us to swim upstream using eddies behind the rocks, so we had to hike back along the river's edge.
Wood Delivery 🪵
We've learned we're too distant from any depots to get good prices cement, mortar, bricks, plaster, rocks, etc., but luckily wood here is almost 50% the normal price in other parts of Cambodia. So even though the in-laws are brick and mortar guys, they are competent enough woodworkers to do the project. So far so good, but the rain is really limiting the amount of working hours in a day.

That is so important, especially living near the whitewater. My daughter does whitewater rafting and I used to worry about her until she showed me how you can work smarter, not harder when you are caught off guard.
I am happy that you give this to the girls.
The house is looking absolutely beautiful! You are getting so close to where you want to be. Good luck to you and the whole family. It is awesome that you have @sreypov's family helping you!

It's good to have some basic swiftwater knowledge for those living around it. I do feel more comfortable knowing they know how to find an eddy and get out if they get overwhelmed or swept away. Is your daughter a guide on the Ocooee? I forgot how to spell it, but I know how to say it. Thanks for the support my friend.
I agree with you! It's important he had so many people don't think it's necessary until they need it. The University that my daughter attends has an Adventure Club and they go out to the Gauly River where they first learned swiftwater safety classes, then went on to white water rafting trips. She loves it, but it still scares me a little. Knowing she does it. :)
Taking time to teach the children how to manage fast flowing river water is of the utmost importance when living close to raging rivers, well done!
House is moving along nicely, soon enough the past will be put well behind you now living more of the life you dreamed about.

Sorry for a way late reply, life has been overwhelming lately to say the least, but I've tried to not stop posting because it's our only source of income these days. Thanks for the support, whitewater swimming technique and veranda moving along well.
the way you flip the beans in the cauldron, your hands look very shrewd, like the hands of a famous chef,,
about the work or house construction that you are doing now seems to be going smoothly, hopefully in the future there will be no obstacles whatsoever in doing the work.
Haha, well I am/was a chef, been working in restaurants on and off my whole life. I once had a restaurant in Cambodia, but we closed it before we went to Ecuador. Thanks for stopping by my friend.
Am not a water guy. Whenever anyone ask me if I can swim, I'd tell them I'm a good diver. Everytime, any depth, I can instantly dive in, and probably afloat couple of days later, or never 🤣
Best thing I've read this morning, this comment gave me a good belly laugh. Luckily the river is not big or deep here, so we'd be able to find you before you floated from internal gas buildup 😁.
You take your daughters' safety very seriously and that's good. They need to stay safe when they play in the river. Roasted peanuts is one of my favourite snacks and I loved to munch them while watching TV.
Safety first always, especially near and in the river. Roasted peanuts are too delicious, especially with deep-fried chilies and curry leaves plus a little salt, a classic Cambodian bar snack.
It's so great you have the experience of white water to teach your girls the safety aspects. I learnt something from reading your post, to go feet first so thanku. That balcony is looking good 👍
Feet-first and as high in the water as possible so as no to get foot entrapment or a broken tailbone. Ideally, if you're flat, anything that was gonna hit your head or tailbone, you can first reach with your feet and push off to somewhere else. I've been teaching them how to catch eddies and swim out.
Reminds me, I can't remember if I ever told you, but at my former wilderness guiding school, I specialized in Ocean Navigation and Sea Kayaking as well, but in the middle of Colorado we had to do the kayaking and navigation at Lake Powell, Utah. Even though not the sea, it's huge and even has a tide, so many of same principles apply.
I read in a previous post of yours that you taught white water rafting but that's interesting that you also did navigation as well. It must be one hell of a lake to have tides!

I wonder what happened to your river, perhaps a dam was built upstream?
They always disappear at night in this household, especially in peanut podi form.
