Gardening|My Side Hobby

IMG_20220909_221253_183.jpg

I have been on and off in this gardening journey.

It all started last year when I began growing vegetables in our orchard 100 meters away from our home. It was a long walk so I chose to leave the garden before tending to it again last month. I grew chillies and cauliflower there, and on top of that I never harvested a single cauliflower head. So I thought back and reflected to what had gone wrong. I realized that my side plants grew well than the plant I always watered and fertilized.

These are dried long chillies kept in a container. These chillies are more spicy than the undried ones and is usually cooked longer too.

Yes, I grow other plants too. I planted trees and almost all of them grew from seeds. It was my dream to own an apple tree and to plant a lot of other stone fruits as well. My trees are young and are still too young to bear fruits so I focused on semi-annual vegetable that I could grow well. Those are chillies and squash which if taken care well-off would tend to last two years.

We brought hybrid seeds from a famous seed brand to be sure they would germinate. We choose squash as our main crop this season as they tend to grow best in our climate. The butternut squash we grew just recently produce a fruit and soon after other buds started to come out as well. Most of the buds remained unfertilized and some plants died so we are left with one squash plant that is producing fruits now. It started to climb to one of the trees we had and we left it clinging there hoping it would produce a lot of fruits there. One of the challenges of growing this crop is that the flowers need to be manually fertilized. Even the rainy season has been affecting the flowers too but as long as it contains at least one fruit and then another after a harvest it is alright.

One of the reason why I cannot sustain a garden is because I'm so lazy at watering the plants. I love gardening too and it's so good to see how some plants are patient with me. I choose a low maintentance plants now that doesn't require much watering like trees and deep rooted vegetables. Most of the plants in our house are my sister's and most of the trees are mine. She planted the herbs and I planted the trees. She like salad greens and I like stone fruits and since we don't have a lot of vegetables I tried to plant one. Only this year I did harvest and I hope to grow some more.

The plants are well these days and as the rainy season began I have a reason for not watering them more often. I added organic fertilizer to the trees hoping that they'll bear fruits next year but today they needed to grow and mature.

This is an earthen gourd and of course its growth is also very fast because usually the soil is fertile and that is what I usually see in the village.

Yes you are right they grow so well in rural areas👍👍👍

do you like growing pumpkins? looks like you're starting to harvest it in the near future?

Yes! Pumkins are great in our climate so i planted more. Thanks for noticing tho😄😄

The size of your pumpkins is very big, ours here is still very small in size.

It is actually a tiny squash, my hands just appear too big up-close but my hands are really tiny😄😄

My gardening journey only lasted wwhen the seeds make it to adulthood. I dont have that much time taking care of them so most of the time their lifespan only lasted around several days. Im guilty

Right now i only choose plants that would be tolerant with me, most of them died too. I hope you start gardening again with plants that are best for you too👍👍👍

Very nice!
