My first experience with steak Diana

in ASEAN HIVE COMMUNITY3 years ago

If you don't know what steak Diana is you can come and sit down right next to me and join the club because up until yesterday I didn't have any idea either. If you has asked me if I wanted some steak Diana I probably would have said yes because it has the word steak in it though.

I ordered it because we were at a birthday party at a relatively expensive restaurant that focused on steaks and it has been my experience in this country of Vietnam that places that serve steak don't generally know what they hell they are doing and definitely don't have steaks on the quality level that they advertise. Therefore, I went for something that was going to be drowned in sauce to make up for what I presumed would be lessor quality meat.

My aplologies for the out of focus picture but my phone sometimes acts like a jerk and this was one of those days.

Basically, steak Diana is a couple of small pieces of top-blade steak - whatever that means - and it is smothered in copious amounts of mushroom sauce. I love mushroom sauce on just about anything including mushrooms so I knew it was going to be great, and it was.

I also ordered a side of cheesy mashed potatoes because why not? Who doesn't love cheesy mashed potatoes?

When I say that this place is relatively expensive you have to realize that this is all relative: Vietnam kind of changes your perspective on what things should cost in a general sense so it wasn't expensive, it just cost a lot more than I would normally spend on dinner. My total bill that included I think 6 beers or so was around 750,000 VND which is just a little bit over $30. So I guess you could say that this would be like going to an Applebees or Outback Steakhouse and probably around the same level of quality.

The place is called "Cook Shop" and it is located near the river in Da Nang

I've been told it is owned by a foreigner but I have no idea if that is true or not. If you want to give it a go, and I recommend you do if you are willing to spend $30 a person for dinner, you can find it here on Gmaps

I have never heard of this before either. I am glad it ended up being something that you enjoyed. The potatoes look good. I am a sucker for good mashed potatoes. I used to eat just a packet of the instant ones for dinner sometimes when I was a young bachelor! Six beers would likely put you over $30 even during happy hour at Applebee's. Prices are just nuts these days. When my wife and I get dinner to go it is usually close to $50 these days that and that is without drinks. We had a gift card for Olive Garden we used this weekend so our tab was only $13, but that is rare!

People bag on Olive Garden constantly and ok, it has been a really long time since I went to an Olive Garden but I remember always enjoying it.

My bachelor go to was frozen chicken pot pies that were something crazy like 30 cents each. They tasted a lot better if you put them in the oven but we both know that this is beyond the patience realm of a college student. Nuke the hell out of it and then very carefully approach eating it because it is going to be melt your face off hot!

Olive Garden is kind of where my wife and I went on our first date so it has always kind of been our place. We enjoy the food but we don't go nearly as often as we used to. The pot pies sound interesting!

Next time you are in your magnificent American grocery stores (seriously, USA really wins in that category) check them out to see if frozen pot pies are still a thing. I believe they were made by Stouffers if I am spelling that correctly. They are probably a couple of dollars now but they always hit the spot back when I was in college.

Oh yeah, they are still around. Never had the pot pies, but their frozen lasagna and French bread pizzas are the best!

Those frozen lasagnas, what I wouldn't do for one of those. Those are so well-made that I once worked in an Italian restaurant many years ago and "our" lasagna was simply Stouffers with our home sauce and more cheese put on top. It sold like crazy too.

I love mushroom sauce too, it is kind of my favorite because, their taste is really good. I think the price is a bit expensive but, the steak is looking delicious and it is big too

Mushroom sauce for me is something that can be put on just about anything and it will make it better. I keep a can of the Campbell's cream of mushroom soup in my house and add that to just about any protein and it makes it awesome.

That awesome food😋😋 look like one of our traditional food call " moent pyar tha lett".

who knows... maybe it's the same thing :)

wow looks delicious

I think that out of what everyone else ordered at the table I had the best value for the money. Other people ordered high cost steaks in the hopes that it would be something special but just like I predicted, the quality of meat here just isn't very good.

When was the last time you ate some down-home cooking in the USA? Would say it compares? I guess easy enough to handle mashed potatoes and sides, but steakery takes some knowledge and a good butcher. I think many of the local butchers here in Cambodian are wildly hacking at random parts until they reach the desired amount of kilos.

I'm not sure what a Cambodian butcher would do if you asked for a steak cut 😕. Vietnam does seem to be better equipped to pull off foreign foods like this.

I used to go back every year but you know, Covid. I haven't been back for around 4 years now but the last time I was there I overindulged in mostly fast food, which is an odd thing to miss but I was at Taco Bell basically every day.

One thing that surprised me is that a wealthy friend of mine took me to an exclusive Manhattan steakhouse because he knows the chef and I was rather nonplussed. It was one of those places where they present the steaks to you and you choose which specific one you want.

A week later I was visiting a country boy friend in Virginia who just bought some steaks from Kroger and grilled them in his yard and they were far superior to the $100 steaks in NYC.

I think that the pork in SE Asia is great but good beef is just really hard to come by and this in my mind even applies to the rather costly imported New Zealand and Australian steaks that are likely frozen to get them over here.

down-home cooking in the USA? Would say it compares?

not even close. I love Asian food but just like when I eat Thai food in USA, they are simply missing a lot of the ingredients and there is no comparison. You gotta go to the source!
