The kid was just being rebellious, as regardless what form of occupation the parent putting up a metaphor, the kid will use that to fight back with the parent.

It's true to earn foreign currency and gain from the exchange rate. But let's not forget the spending power is different. I have friends who earn a killer living in Japan, but the kind of life is technically never see the sun.
