Mundane Life | Splurging On Revision Books For My Daughter

in ASEAN HIVE COMMUNITY2 years ago

How was your weekend? It wasn't so bad for me since I finally fulfilled my promise to my daughter to shop for some revision books.

I had been postponing this trip to the bookstore several times because we needed money for more pressing matters like making new pairs of prescription glasses for her and her brother., and replacing brake pads on my husband's car. We can't afford to spend on everything all at once, since we are living on a tight budget.

She had her first school exams earlier this month and despite her best effort, the results aren't too encouraging except for English. I am not complaining nor do I a tiger mother who pressures her child endlessly to excel in her studies. However, the way I see it there is plenty of room for her to improve and as a parent, I will try my best to provide whatever she needs for her studies. Also, she has been asking me about those revision books and not to delay buying them because she has another set of assessment tests coming next month.

So, last Saturday, we went to have that much-needed trip to the bookstore. Shopping for revision books can be a daunting task. There are so many different options on the market, and it can be hard to know which ones are right for my daughter.

Upon entering the bookstore we were "greeted" by stacks and stacks of revision books by different publishers. We felt pretty overwhelmed by the many options that were presented to us. So I told my daughter to start with one subject first and compare the book's content to others and pick the one she thinks will be the most helpful, and move on to the next subject and so on.

Malaysia probably has the lousiest education system in the world with different education policies implemented every few years by different policy makers. We couldn't even agree on what language to use in teaching Mathematics and Science. And not to mention different exam formats implemented or revoked throughout the years. So, the last thing we wanted was to buy a revision book that is out of date and doesn't cover the latest curriculum.

Apart from buying revision books, she also picked books with practice questions. And after browsing through the shelves, she finally picked books for 4 of her weakest subject - Mathematics, Malay Language, History, and Moral Education.

And the total cost was....that's roughly USD41. Definitely not cheap 🤦‍♀ but she needs the books so I won't complain.

This boy patiently waited for the sister but he later complained of being hungry. We headed out to the "food court" after paying for the books and had an early dinner. As you can see, his favorite food is non-other than sushi.

It sounds good that you fulfilled your promise to your daughter. I remember having different revision books from my cousins residing in Singapore, but we were not reading much. Education still matters, though. In our country, we also have different curriculums. But most of the time, we use English when learning Mathematics or Science. And right now that I'm already a college student, we don't have a subject that uses Filipino. Maybe that's just how our curriculum works!

English is a universal language and it makes sense that it is used as the medium of instruction at the tertiary level since many reference books are imported from the west.

Hopefully those books is a great help for her.

I noticed you three are wearing glasses.
