What do you use when you eat?
Do you use a spoon? A fork? Or maybe both? Or do you use chopsticks?
Here in the Philippines we use our hands. This is not being sarcastic because literally there are certain foods that we can eat with just using our bare hands. We call it in our dialect as kinamot style of eating.
When we went to Baybay City, we decided to have our very late lunch at The Barbecuehan sa Boardwalk located at the new reclamation area.
I already shared about this place in my previous blog, but we only checked out the place without having to dine in there. We did not experience the alfresco dining with a beautiful view of the mountains and the sea. But this time we're here for the food.
At the center of the structure is the dining area and on the sides are food stalls selling generally barbecue as the name of this place implies. There are also other food dishes being sold. So if you are not into eating barbecue, there is a range of other choices.
It was around 3 o'clock pm, so, most of the tables were empty.
We were starving already so we ordered some barbecues enough to satisfy our hungry stomach. Barbecue options were chicken, pork and longganisa.
We chose chicken barbecue and longganisa.
And of course, we could not consider a meal without rice. A barbecue meal goes perfectly with puso. Puso is rice packed inside weaved coconut leaves before it is being cooked. Puso rice is also perfect for people on the go because you can just carry them without the need to place them inside food containers. You can also easily dispose of its coconut leaves wrapper without harming the environment.
And to spice up this simple barbecue meal, is the sawsawan. A sawsawan is usually a mix of soy sauce, vinegar and calamansi. The mixture is according to your liking since you'll be the one to put together the ingredients of the sawsawan. You can also add chili if you want it spicy and hot. This will add more flavor to the barbecue.
This was my serving.
When I was about to eat, I asked for the spoon and fork but instead the husband handed me a plastic to wrap my hand as to not make it messy with all the food residues. That was because we would be eating this food kinamot style (or using only our bare hands).
How is kinamot style being done?
Pile a small amount of food on the plate and then wrap it around with your fingertips and pick it up. Put it directly to your mouth by pushing the food inward using your thumb.
And that's the classy way of eating kinamot style. 🙅 With kinamot style, it's guaranteed you'll satisfy your hunger quick and easy especially with fried or grilled foods.
The barbecue was good. My husband approved of it and of course I did too. The soft wind blowing from the surrounding was so refreshing too. Overall it was a great experience dining at Baybay City's Barbecuehan sa Boardwalk.
Nagutom ako! I am a sucker sa barbecue hands down pag ganyan especially pag masarap yung suka nila nako taob ang mga extra rice.
Still haven't tried puso kasi wala nyan dito hopefully magkaroon. Though I know how to do it thanks to the blogs that I have read still iba parin yung binili haha.
Yung sawsawan din talaga bida. Same, I love barbecue.
Baka di na masyadong marami gumagawa ng puso. Medyo time consuming din kase, kelangan gumawa nung lalagyan ng rice..
Aww. Gustong-gusto ko talagang kumakain gamit ang kamay. Mas nakakaganang kumain. Anyway, the foods you shared made me drool! Makes me want to try some barbecue later on.
Ayay, masarap yan! BBQ with matching sawsawan! D pa nakatikim nyang puso, or does it taste like regular rice cooked in pots or rice cooker? The place looks cool and nice by the way :)
Yes sis it tastes like regular rice but its more compact and there's a little aroma to it dahil sa coconut leaves. It's rice on the go.
Aah, it makes sense, sis. Mabango sya kasi binalot sa coconut leaves. May natikman kami overseas, sticky rice na binalot sa bamboo leaves tapos may fillings sa loob.
We have variety of sticky rice delicacy wrapped in banana leaves. Ung may chocolate filling sa loob we call it magsaysay.
Oh wow, sarap nyan! And ang cool din ng name :-)
Yes sis. Very historic and remarkable name heheh. Pero di ko bakit magsaysay tawag.
Hehe, okay rin :-) Parang named after a prominent figure hehe

Hehe napapasarap talaga kain kapag nagkakamay.
Hello @bluepark we eat by hands daily. Just at the party or cafe we use spoon or fork or even knife and I m not pro using fork and knife
Thank you for sharing your experience there
I eat with bare hands or spoon and fork depending on the food. I don't use knife too.
Thanknyou for dropping by!
Looks good I haven't had the opportunity to try a sawsawan. Probably not available for me here since most of the time I eat at a Buffett when I have your cuisine.
We love dipping any fried or grilled food in sawsawan. Even in restos or buffets, it can't be missing. 😄
Sawsawan will boost the flavors and you'll find yourself eating more. Heheh. I don't if that's a good thing or not 😄😄. I hope you can try it too. Maybe someday you might stumble upon Asian resto in your country. I guess sawsawan is also an Asian thing and not just the Ph.
Eat well and have a wonderful weekend!
I messed up I meant puso
I was reading and went back up and copied the wrong name haha
Hahah I was best in explaining but with the wrong reason. 😆... Not sure if puso is possible in your place. They need to find coconut leaves for this.
My husband always uses spoons with fork. I use only spoon but eats with hand in some food. Thank you for your share with us.
I am not a fork lover too. At home I only use spoon and of bare hand with usually dry foods. I guess this is something common among aseans.
