It is that time of year again, can you believe it? It seems like it wasn't that long ago that I prepped the raised beds for winter. Geeze, time flies by so quickly sometimes. Well, it is a nice change for me instead of always baking and cooking in the kitchen.
I placed two different orders this year, one from Baker Creek and one from MIgardener whom I love to watch on YouTube.
They have been shipped and will arrive this week. I received my seeds from MIgardener just four days after ordering from them. I needed Utah Spanish Onions, Shallots, and Red Wing Onions which I planted a week ago. I only had a small amount to finish up from last year's packages so I used those first.
Redwing is an F1 hybrid onion that was fabulous in my garden last year. I mainly grow heirloom varieties but I have to say I'm so happy with how well they store.
This morning some of them are already sprouting under the grow lights.
I sowed Rosita Eggplant, the Shallots, and Walla Walla to get a few started while I wait on the onion order. I plan on doing two raised beds with onions this spring.
I sorted through what seeds needed planting this week and decided to do all the Brassicas. I plant them out in early April under a plastic covering in the largest raised bed.
Today, I will be sowing a few lettuce and spinach seeds to get a start for the hydroponic tubs that I start in March. It was cold filling trays in the garage with soil mix, so I brought them into the kitchen to work on the island. It was so much nicer than freezing my fingers. lol

You're so well prepared and organised. I wanted to start sowing some seeds last week but my sister says it's still too cold and early. She's a lot more knowledgeable than me in the garden so I'm just going listen to her, and od course follow all you expert gardeners on Hive
It is still very cold here in NY too but I keep the seeds under lights in my basement for a month before going out into the greenhouse in March. I always have to start the onions early and the eggplant. Today I sowed all the hot peppers too. Take your time as there is no hurry. I've been doing this for 40+ years and have a system down pat. ;-)

Maybe some day I will have the infrastructure that will allow me to start as early as you do! We grow many of the same varieties.
I've used Fedco for decades. Lower prices, more seed in packet, good quality seed usually. Next I use High Mowing because I try to get only organic seed so they are back up. I've also gotten seed from Terroir but long ago gave up on Burpee: not much organic and prices really high! Johnny's is a last resort, again, really high prices and not a lot of organic.
I did a serious price comparison of many companies several years ago. It's probably time to do it again, but not this year as I am so far behind...
