Planting Elderberry bushes and Thornless Blackberries

in HiveGarden9 months ago

With the forecast showing freezing weather over for the foreseeable future I figured this would be a great time to plant some of the more hardy plants outside. I bought some Elderberry plants last December and they have been waiting in their little pots for too long. We can see by how root bound they are they should have been moved to bigger pots a long time ago. So hopefully they will recover once placed in big holes outside.

When I put them in the ground I will work the roots out of their clumps and into the fresh soil placed in each hole.

With six of them, I think I will have too many at some point. But I guess that is a good thing to have... guess I am going to be making lots of wine with them.

Really excited to see these grow, they are small now but not for long.

I watched some videos on these plants, I can expect them to get over 10 feet tall in a short amount of time.

For the dirt added to each hole I will be using Foxfarm Ocean Forest. After placing them into the hole and adding dirt, I will cover the top with the clay dug up from each hole to keep it from drying out too much.

The holes dug are inside the deer fence enclosure, and spaced out 8 feet per row and 6 feet between rows

Its always hard to say where I should dig, but usually based on what I read online is pretty good info.

Wish I could get my skidsteer over to this spot to drill the holes, since I could not I used a shovel and did it by hand. Dug six holes for them each as few feet deep and wide.

Now they are in the ground and added the clay dirt on top that was dug out of each hole.

Soon it will rain and give them a good watering. But soon I will need to give them water when the rains do not come.

Hope they do well, they may not fruit this year but I think they sure could next year if they grow well.

Next I move onto the Thornless Blackberries.

With a bunch of roots I have some good starter plants, I cut them down to 24 inches or so as to keep them from going into shock too bad.

Got myself a dozen or so roots to start new plants.

Also dug up some comfrey, will move that over into the enclosed garden as well.

I also have some cuttings, the parts that were too long from the root balls I dug up. I will bury these partially and hope they grow making new plants.

A thirty foot fence was set up using t-posts. I still need to tie it down better but its good enough for a day or so until I can come back with more paracord.

As these blackberry plants grow, I will train them into the welded wire fence.

With so many root balls dug up, they filled in this fence nicely. Every four feet or so there is a plant. As they grow it should all fill in nicely.

The cuttings were placed into beds as well and covered up with dirt. Hopefully they will root and give me even more to plant.

Also put a couple in a raised bed, had so many.. lol

I really like the thornless variety. I grew the wild kind with thorns for a long time, and thankful these thornless types exist. The fruit is soo tasty right off the vine and once established they come back year after year.

Good evening my friend, you have planted an elderberry plant, may the plant grow very well according to your wishes ❤️

Hello @solominer

It's great that the weather is changing, and the frosts are over, so you can now transplant the elderberry trees you bought.

I hope the rain comes; it's good for the plants' growth.

Wow, over 10 feet? I might have to look into those. We are thinking about creating some kind of privacy from our neighbors who just put in a hot tub and a TV in their backyard. It's all fully visible from our raised deck and not really what we want to be looking at!

Yep, I hear they can get really big. Hopefully I spaced them out enough.. lol

:) Hopefully! I'll have to keep those in mind. I need something evergreen though.

What a great activity my friend.

Hopefully it can produce good results. Take good care of it, give it enough water, and also enough sunlight.🙏🥰😘

Ah yeah I think with the right care they will do just fine.

Woah man, Elderberries grow so fast. The thornless blackberries are a definitely great choice, thankfully no more scratched arms while picking them. Wish you the best of luck with the wine plans

Oh nice, these will be my first ones.. so we shall see how fast they grow.

Hah yeah picking wild blackberries can tear up your hands and arms.

thanks

Not easy but Worth it getting them delicious berries

Greetings brother, as always the best in gardening, you are a Pro in what you do, in my house I have some plants, really few because I have a small space, I have lechosa, lemon, banana and yucca, I do not know if it happened only to me but when I water them I enter is a unique state of relaxation, that relaxes me enough, not to mention some decorative plants that my wife has, and every day I go out to the yard to look at them, see them as they grow is unique.

Ah thanks, well you still have a few plants and that is great.

So true, when I water everything it is a ritual.. something I do every day but its a part of my life now.

best of luck with your plants.

Busy busy! A nice productive day, @solominer - your post brings back memories of when I lived in the Weald of Kent many years ago, picking wild blackberries with my nan and aunt, and picking both elderflowers and elderberries with a wine-making friend.

Sure was, got a lot of work done that day.

Oh nice, that sounds like some nice memories. I hope to make wine with my berries one day, sounds fun.

I hope your plants grow big and strong. Thank you for your detailed instructions, very informative.

Thanks much... glad you liked my post.

Been thinking of getting into agriculture from the corporate life. But I know nothiing about plants. The real estate prices where I live are so overvalued but you can get a few acres of agricultural land for a fraction of the cost.

Yep raw land is cheap, but you need to prep it to grow.. around here its all forest.. so you need to remove the trees, stumps/roots and rocks. But worth it when its all cleared.

Wow, it's cool that you planted plants that have very delicious fruits. Hopefully in the new place they will quickly adapt and grow well.

Yep, hopefully in a few years I will get some tasty fruit.. elderberries need to be cooked before eating.. but the blackberries can be eaten raw.

Look at the coincidence. I planted blackberry seedlings just 10 days ago. Planting blackberry seedlings is easy. They sprout very easily with the cutting method. They sprout easily like grape and vine seedlings.

Oh.. haha nice. I dug up some root balls that were growing in another part of my property and moved them over.. much easier than seeds.

A thirty foot fence was set up using t-posts.

Just how big is your farmland!! For you to be able to erect all of these.

Its pretty big. The fenced in area is large enough for dozens of raised beds. And a few empty spots give us the space to put up t-posts and run fencing on it.

Wow!! That’s massive. All the best okay?

Great transplating time out you had here…nice plants. I love the ones in the black pots. Why are you planting them along the wire gauge? Would it be so that they would have something to cling on while growing?

Ah thanks... I plant them on the fencing so when they grow I can wrap them through it and tie them to it to help them grow up. Training vines helps much with their growth.

Ok thanks good to know
Weldone

This is amazing! I had no idea that thornless blackberries even existed. And I would love to plant some elderberries in my yard/garden ... thanks for the inspo!

Ah yeah, I just discovered the thornless variety maybe 5 years ago.. was such a cool find.

No problem, best of luck with your grow.

How interesting. I've always wanted to know how this type of fruit is grown. They're not very common in my country; they're like a treasure.

Ah yeah its tasty.

Will you be making elderflower champagne and elderberry wine?

woow, que trabajo no? Para proteger a las pequeas, que gusto que pudiste conseguir el objetivo. Buena cosecha para ti

yep gotta protect them until they get big and strong.
