The days are warm at the moment and we are making the most of it by getting the garden ready for its year.
The children too are working on their little area, excited to be back outside during the afternoons rather than cooped up in our cold little home!
Their garden now includes peas, beans, mint, onions & lettuce.
Esteban has planted peas in these hanging 'pots' and like him I am keen to see how they do in there!
Today is fire day which means we must stay here all day. If we leave the fire even when it appears dead there is a risk due to sudden high winds which can pick the entire fire up and dump it down somewhere else.
We dug a little hole to avoid this as much as possible.
Mostly it is oak leaves to burn today, so pretty smokey.
Enjoyed better from the back of the garden.
Luna was just getting on with her own thing while the fire was getting started. Mixing up some mud soup for everyone.
Next to the kids area we have this lovely bed of beans.
Another bean bed behind the trampoline here.
And another over here with more coming up right next to them. The key to a longer harvest period is staggered planting.
A few of the peas are just starting to flower and this is truly a glorious sight.
We have three main pea beds, each with a slightly different design.
This is the first one which is a bit of a mish mash of techniques. Wire & string all over the place.
There are three rows of peas in here so it needed a larger design.
Not sure if they will get to the top of that frame but we can always dream!
The second pea bed is in the centre of the garden and is a more basic design.
It is probably the most effective in my opinion, but let's see how it goes...
Certainly the peas seem very happy growing up these vertical wires which are all tied on to a piece of bamboo and buried under the soil before planting the seeds.
The third pea bed is on the south facing side of the garden against the fence.
In fact, I have two varieties of onion growing here, then peas and last but not least, the stinging nettles. All growing exactly where they should be.
The nettles extend out to the other side of the fence too as they are not fussy about sunlight. They can be harvested from here (for soups & juices) all year round.
Right, time for a little pit stop at the local salad bar.
I ordered the chef's special.
The royal salad preparer was working hard in her tent.
Not bad.
This bed was a bit of an experiment. I just threw down rocket and parsley seeds in the autumn to see what would happen.
The rocket seems absolutely fine (on the right) but the parsley is waiting for the Spring to take off. All good learning experiences.
Last year we had classic lettuce popping up everywhere at this time of year. This year it is the lamb's lettuce. Known here in France as la mache.
Look carefully and you will find it everywhere.
We buried the aloe vera in oak leaves this winter, hoping to save it from the frost. Last year it died back almost completely because we left it exposed.
A lovely looking classic lettuce here, still surviving well from last year.
A few stray rocket plants over here, loving the space to expand as they desire.
Interesting to see this contrasted with the full bed of rocket. Perhaps more controlled planting may actually yield better?
Ah! Look at this baby cat asleep in the sun. Love that :)
I built a little support for the raspberries which we planted last year. During their first year in the ground they produced very little fruit, putting all their energy into getting established. So I have high hopes for their second year...
Right in front of them are these wild onions which actually grow all over the garden.
I just give the tufts a little haircut every now and then, and throw it in the salad.
This cat loves sitting on the trampoline when the children are not on it.
Hello you!
He also loves sitting on my lap when given the opportunity.
Here is Luna giving my stomach some Reiki. (I took these shots during my fast.)
All done she says :)
Just before departure we noticed baby cat trying to get a drink from one of our water reserve bins.
He is just about tall enough to get at it now.
A funny sight to watch.
Yummy :)
So, that's it I think.
Here is Luna leaving you a heart.
And baby cat posing for the camera!
Love & Light everyone π±
Greetings! I love how the kids are joining in the fun of gardening. Great job to all of you. Also, I am again excited to see the next update of your blog. And dy the way, your garden is amazing and the soil seems fertile. Good evening!
Thanks for your comment my friend. Yes, the soil in this entire region is very fertile, so many farmers live around us growing a wide variety of fruit, nuts & vegetables. Even in the wild there is so much edible stuff, though people around here seem to have forgotten this.
Though with that said, we do create a large amount of compost so we are always adding nutrients to the soil of our garden to keep it strong. It also likes the ash from the fire :)
You're welcome (^_^) I'll be looking forward to your next gardening blog.
Ah yes! Mud soup and salad kitchens! While we are still cooped indoors in the heat of the day in our extremely opposite temperatures, my kiddos are also enjoying every opportunity in the garden.
Thank you for reminding me how the grass is always greener on the other side! Funny though isn't it that the solution to both our problems is outside in the garden ;)
All the best and please send my regards to the heat!
How about a swap? Heat wave for a few wheelbarrow loads of snow
I just love the garden and your family love so Happy
Hey brother. Looks like you are new to hive. Welcome!
Enjoy the ride ;)
Looks lovely! Beautiful garden you have there.
Can't wait to get going on our garden, but we still have a lot of cold days to come; snow in the forecast for Monday, and we have to wait until April to be frost-free. But we have potatoes sprouting in the garage, along with various seedlings.
Thanks! It's getting there. Am happy with the diversity of plants which survive through the winter each year.
Technically we should also wait till April to be frost-free but for now it has been quite a mild winter. Wondering if the cold bit isn't yet to come???
Awesome garden! Kids are happy... sunny days! :)
...and the place you are at is beautiful!
These days was warm and sunny here too...
so I prepared my little garden as well, pruning some trees, sorting compost and soils...
and giving life to some red onions and garlic...
parsley and lettuce next! :)
Have a nice day!
Make the most of the sunshine my friend :)
Good idea for the garlic! Don't think we planted any yet...
Enjoy your garden!
Ahhh, to have a garden going so early in the year. Yesterday was high wind and blizzards off and on....
Must be so tough. Not sure I would survive the winter if we didn't have these mild periods. Yesterday all of us had our tops off and were jumping on the trampoline like it was Summer :)
Though I remain a little suspicious of this weather and am prepared still for a cold snap should it arrive.
Oh, you know, us tough New Englanders, we stick it out here because we like it here. LOL The weather just provides plenty of conversation... :))
I bet it does! And I take my hat off to you. Certainly you get to see sights that people in the tropics can only dream of! Because there is nothing quite like the perfection of a fresh snow covered vista...
On the first snowfall...
What a spot. Definitely need to move somewhere hotter. We've had two weeks of rain and storms, not ideal weather to boost the garden. Need to make a space inside I think π€
Yes, to extend your growing season you must start things indoors. Like @denmarkguy guy mentioned above, potatoes are a good choice for this.
Or create a greenhouse if you can. Doesn't have to be anything fancy. Could just be a hole in the ground with some plastic over the top.
Or you could start growing microgreens on your windowsills. This works all year round and while it won't fill you up it will supplement your meals with high nutrition.
Yep sure thing. With the wind over the last few days, it battered the garden. Maybe a walipini kind of structure if I can find some cheap wood.
A lot to look into ππ½
This looks so beautiful! :)
Cool cat :3

Upvoted π (Mana: 40/80) Liquid rewards.
Appreciated. It's not a bad little spot. Though as time goes on I wish it were a bit bigger!
So many things I want to grow...
Cat says hello :)
How exciting to see Spring around the corner and work begin in the garden. Before long you will have all that late season abundance of jams, preserves, ferments and so on to occupy the children too!
