My garden last year. Part III: all the flowers

in HiveGarden2 years ago

Oh, snap! The snapdragons have arrived!

Last year was the first year I focused on growing so many variations of flowers in my garden. It turned out to be the part that brought the most joy. While one might think that the flowers are the least useful plants in the garden, it does not surprise me I got so much enjoyment out of them. After all, I am a visual person. I love bright, vibrant colors not only in my artwork but also in my surrounding environment.

And the colors they brought! They looked like sophisticated, ever-changing paintings to my eyes! So, despite risking seeming like an absolute weirdo to the new neighbors, I spent a lot of time trying to capture their fragile, evolving beauty with my camera whenever I had the opportunity. Especially, since one moment they are there, happily reaching towards the sun, and the next they fade away, wilt, and fall on the ground as the cycle of life demands.

2

The petals of dahlia. They look like flames!

In my mind, the vision of the beautiful flower garden was reserved only for when I would own the land myself. But the new gardening plot I currently rent inspired me to put my training wheels on also for this aspect of gardening, as it takes time to learn what each flower needs. For example, the spacing or the size differences or how they behave during the phases in their development, and how they are affected by various conditions in their environment. It also takes time to find fun combinations of flowers that go well together and to discover the favorites among them.

So far, my two favorites are dahlias and snapdragons. Both of which come in all the colors and color combinations imaginable. And the blooms of dahlias have so many diverse shapes! They are so, so gorgeous!

Snapdragons do not require much attention or work at all. Dahlias, on the other hand, need a lot of care as they demand to be deadheaded of the old blooms often so that the new blooms would come in their place. I love both snapdragons and dahlias, and cannot have enough of them!

As I write this post I already have purchased more variations of dahlias for this year, and plan to extend the flower beds as much as I can. There will be even more space for all sorts of flowers and I would like to learn some replacement systems as well. Meaning, as soon as one flower type finishes blooming, others would start in their place.

I have other plans for my flowers as well but I will share about that when the time is right!

3

The three stages of the flower garden. The beginning of the blooms, the peak, and once some of the flowers had stopped blooming.

Any lessons from this year? A few. The first one that comes to mind was about planting dahlia tubers. It is best to wait until the weather is dry, sunny, and warm. I planted some of the tubers too early, and it happened to rain not soon after. I almost lost a few of them to rot. As soon as I realized they had begun rotting, I pulled them out of the ground and placed them in dry soil in the greenhouse where it was warmer as well. I was lucky they recovered.

Another lesson or perhaps refreshing of the memory of something I had known previously, or even slightly came as a surprise. Once the flowers had begun blooming, they did not seem to suffer much if I did not water them as frequently. Now, I might be wrong about it. I would have to run some experiments. For example, sowing the same flowers in two different beds, water one often and water the other one less, and see how they behave. And also it probably depends. What works for one may not work for others. Asters, for example, showed signs of wilting had I neglected them and not watered them for too long.

As I mentioned in my previous post, I had not done much planning of what goes where. That caused the bigger flowers to take most of the space away from the smaller ones and overshadowed some of them completely impeding their progress. So that is something to be more mindful about going forward as I do hope for the best result for all my plants.

And lastly, growing flowers is quite easy, fun, and extremely addictive! I now want to grow all the flowers! More flowers, please!

4

Zinnias loved the hot summer!

But enough talk! Have a look at the wonderful blooms from my garden last year!

5

Violets. They struggled in the beginning, right after transplantation into the beds. The leaves turned pale, and I was worried they would not survive. But they had plenty of life in them!

6

I received a lot of compliments for these beautiful dahlias. They are called “Lady Darlene”. I am pretty sure my neighbors were eyeing them. I will have to return the favor and give them some tubers at some point.

7

8

I am a bit ashamed to admit that I am not sure what these yellow flowers are. It came along with a dahlia tuber that one of my neighbors gifted me. Does anyone know what they could be?

9

This dahlia is called “Golden Sceptre”, and I love the shape of these blooms!

10

The snapdragons, “Majestic mix” at the start of their blooming period.

11

The blooms of “Fleurel” were huge! The size of my face! Stunning! They also needed support poles because of how heavy their blooms were.

12

This rose was another gift to me, and unfortunately, I don’t know the name of the variety. It stayed the same height the whole time, and I deadheaded it a couple of times after looking up a video on Youtube. It is one of the aspects of roses that have scared me in the past. They require some experience and knowledge to handle them correctly. That said, I would like to acquire that experience! So, more roses in my garden in the future might show up!

13

Tansies were part of my flower/herb bed. I am still to familiarize myself with their medicinal properties.

14

Butterflies love zinnia blooms the most.

15

16

17

I loved the color of these flower peas. They were called “Old Spice Henry Eckford”. Oh, and the scent of these was great too!

18

These chrysanthemums were another gift from the neighbors.

19

20

21

22

23

24

Bees and bumblebees enjoyed all the flowers, especially zinnias, snapdragons, and sunflowers. However, I felt there were plenty of wildflowers around for them to munch on, and there weren’t as many visiting my flower garden as I had seen at the old place. Or, perhaps there was some other reason. I did hear an angry-sounding hornet flying by now and then.

25

31

I snuck a herb/medicinal plant bed among the flower beds. And hey, they have pretty blooms as well. There were calendulas, chamomile, yarrow, tansies, milk thistle, and marigolds.

32

33

This greenish/yellowish zinnia is called “Envy”. I picked them because flowers can be green also, ha!

34

35

How happy looks is this calendula basking in the golden hour?

36

The coleus plant.

37

38

39

Right next to my gardening plot is the jungle of goldenrod and lupins. The neighbors were complaining about these, how they described them, weeds, while I enjoyed the bright rainbow colors from lupins and the vibrant yellows from the goldenrods.

40

41

42

Another variety of dahlias that were a gift to me. Unfortunately, the name is unknown to me.

43

Spanish lavender. This one was a fighter! I transplanted it from the pot at one of the hottest times last summer, and it nearly died on me. I kept watering it, and later it came back to life and bloomed until the first frost.

44

45

The white English lavender. While from afar, it looks white, in the closeup, you can tell that there is light purple/blue color lingering.

46

47

48

Snapdragons in all their glory!

49

50

51

52

53

54

Here we can see the coral-colored dahlia called “Gallery Pablo” right next to the zinnias. That was a mistake. I did not realize that these dahlias are of a short variety, and therefore zinnias overshadowed them eventually.

I now fully understand the people to whom gardens can become their life’s work. There is so much beauty that can be created and grown. I wish for it in my life as well. Even more so since there is so much ugliness in the world.

60

I hope you enjoyed this parade of colors! Thank you for sticking around! Until next time! I will now go and sow new seeds for this year’s garden!

Hello @m31 !

You just brought back childhood memories in me. My grandparents had a large garden with many flowers and many cherry trees. Among the flowers were snapdragons. For hours I could play with them. Open the mouth of the snapdragon and close it again.😃
A beautiful, colorful selection of flowers you have in your garden. Really beautiful. A small oasis of flowers! @missagora

Hey there! Thank you so much for your comment! I am happy that my post brought back some memories! That sounds amazing! My grandmother also had beautiful flower beds all around her house and one of my first memories of snapdragons also are from her garden. And Zinnias. She adored flowers. I have an old photo somewhere with her in her flower garden and all the grandkids surrounding her. If I will find it somewhere maybe I could share.

Oh, I have big plans for the flowers this year too! I hope it will all work out. It should nonetheless if the nature and world will allow.

This is so nice that we still had the opportunity to grow up with a garden. Many children today who live in the city can't even imagine that. That is a great pity.
For your future project, I keep my fingers crossed. But I am sure that it will succeed. Many warm greetings sends you @missagora

How can people hate goldenrod and lupines minding their own business, unless perhaps they are a non-native invasive species?

They see them as inconvenience. They are tall and hard to cut. I guess them attracting certain wildlife and snakes also is a concern. But I did not observe any issues. I rather have a field of lupines and goldenrod next to me than another neighbor, tbh xD

Last year was the first year I focused on growing so many variations of flowers in my garden. It turned out to be the part that brought the most joy.

Oh, M, that was the most beautiful scroll to behold. I am so, so glad you focused on flowers, just seeing pictures of them made me smile, especially since it is a subarctic wonderland outside my window lol!

My grandma always had some snapdragons in her flower beds, I've always loved them, and your dahlias are absolutely beautiful, I seriously can't wait to see what you coax from the earth this year😊

especially since it is a subarctic wonderland outside my window lol!

Ahaha! It is the same here still as well. For a moment all snow melted away and it seemed that spring would start early. But the winter is now back at full swing. In fact, winter here has been so strong at points, that it claimed my newly built greenhouse which was supposed to be able to handle our winters :( And seems that many neighbors had the same happen to their greenhouses. At least mine was not made from glass. I would not want to deal with picking all the tiny pieces out of the soil.

So I think, the gardening season will start with some repairs xD But I am so excited for this year!

Oh no! You had greenhouse carnage! I am so sorry, and I am super glad to hear yours wasn't made of glass, picking up shards sucks!

Speaking of greenhouses, this is the year I get to completely renovate the soil in mine, so my gardening year will start with more than bit of fun manual labor. Not that I care, after all this snow and frost I am more than ready to get my hands dirty.

Can't wait to see all the M garden footage, it always brightens my day😊

ooohhhh just gorgeous!!!

I'm trying to get a flower garden in as well in this place. so beautiful. My mother was the flower gardener. She does such beautiful stuff.

well done, they are gorgeous!

Aww, thank you @blingit!

I did not expect to have such a great success with flowers at first at all. But after the first trials it is clear to me how lucky I am with the plot and the soil there. Everything grows extremely well. Since I now have some basics worked in already, I think this year I will have even more time to create some magic and extend it even further.

Hehe, I see we have some similar interests! Art, gardening and other stuff! Giving you a follow! :) I hope your hand recovers soon and you will be back to all the creative things you love doing! And can't wait to see your gardening and art posts in future too!

Yes i am very much "arty" lol. i hope hand recovers, its just been so jolly slow.

Well for someone new to flowers they are amazing!!! i can't wait to get some more into the garden this year. Its high on my list. So good for bees and biodiversity. Although some of the vegetables look so pretty when they go to seed. Broccoli and fennel... oh my such pretty flowers. lol

Happy gardening to you, can't wait to see more flower posts!

Sarah

I'd spend my entire day in this beautiful garden of Eden if I had the opportunity 🥺🥰. It's beautiful and could inspire me to do a lot of things. How did you achieve this beauty? Actually I also have a dream to own something like this too in my backyard when I get myself a land and build on it. This is very beautiful TBH.❤️

Aww thank you for your kind words! I just tossed some seeds in the soil. Well, it was a bit more than that, but I really enjoy working with plants in my garden and to see how my work directly impacts their well-being if it makes sense? It is very satisfying process.

The garden indeed was like Eden at times for me. Especially harder times. I would go there and spend a few hours working, then go home feeling much better. I can't explain it, but I think you got the essence of the place from the photos I shared. It has really good vibes and I am so lucky I got this plot to work with.

I hope your dream comes true! <3

You indeed got a treasure there, I can imagine the peace you get from just being around those lovelies.

I hope your dream comes true! <3

Thank you so much 🥰

What a joy! Seeing the good results of the effort and what nice plants 😍 really the pictures leave a lot to say about your effort. I love the flowers and have imagined myself in your garden, looking at the pictures. I congratulate you very nice flowers in your garden, surely you enjoy the showy colors.

Thank you @rigel-gladys! I felt it was important to capture as much of the beauty in my garden as possible. Like making a time capsule through photography of something so fragile such as my flowers. It makes me happy you enjoyed them and they took you on the journey through my garden! I can't wait to add even more flowers and colors in my garden this year as well! :)

finally!
😄🐞💙🍇

Ahaha! Yeah! While I do enjoy creating these long, long posts quite a lot, I was struggling with some things in between posts and had no bandwidth to finish this one sooner. I also did not want to work on the post while feeling a bit crappy as I felt it would reflect in my writing. So I had to pause. But I am so happy I was able to share my flowers! I hope you enjoyed this one @rozku! <3

Of course! I have the same. :)
I only write when I feel like I have something to write. I understand it perfectly!

Just by looking at it I can feel peace in that garden, congrats friend because you have it all because in my opinion it is a place to care for inner peace.

Score! I am so happy you caught the essence of my garden through my images! It is so peaceful and healing for me. I would catch myself having a big smile while walking through it or working at it. It instantly improved my mood every time I was there and calmed me down. I am so lucky tbh. I don't want to ever take something like it for granted.
