Hello Garden Community! I have truly loved scrolling through all your gardening posts and wanted to share a bit about my own, very small, plot too.
At the moment I am visiting home for a couple of months. As my time and space is limited, the best option to grow fresh greens quickly is to focus on sprouts and micro greens aka baby salad mixes.
While visiting family, this little corner of the yard is truly my happy place. And luckily it is also a micro climate where greens - such as radish tops and arrugula - grow abundantly.
Baby greens are easy to grow with a few easy-to-come by materials. Seeds, and lots of them, are necesary which you can find online or in garden centers. You will also need potting soil, compost, and either plastic containers or ceramic pots -- I used both although I proritize ceramic whenever available.
The seeds will be sown very close together, this is key with micro greens, as the plants will be harvested when immature. Lettuce, basil, arrugula, and radishes are all great crops to try. These greens will be harvested young, and thus much sooner than the conventional gardening method.
Over the years we have located a couple of great growing spots for young plantings and baby leaves. As you can tell from the photos, these pots and other containers are tucked under trees which protect them from intense sun and wind. The whole garden is just outside the kitchen door and are watered daily, sometimes twice a day. Really, the closer the garden is to the kitchen the more often they can be tended to and the easier they will be to encorporate into daily chores.
These little greens have been growing two weeks and some are ready to harvest for a spring salad tonight!
Love those photos of you - aren't you gorgeous! I love going into the garden for microgreens.
Thanks for those kind words! I love going out to harvest micro greens, and fresh herbs too! That will be the subject of a future post for sure -- happy gardening
