You can paint anti-rot stuff on the inside of the boxes, but they will eventually rot away, but that should be in about 5 years from now. On the outside, you can do what you want. I would suggest something like blackboard pain. That way the kids can draw on it with chalk and label what you plant in it. My suggestion.
