Harvesting Potatoes and Memories of My Childhood Gardening Experience

We harvested half of our potatoes. Our garden is not very deep, so our potatoes are pretty small but tasty. We bought and planted potatoes from a local farm. I prefer the typical yellow potatoes over the red-skinned ones. In my area, potatoes are popular farming vegetables and a staple in the diet of Indigenous people. In my hometown, potatoes are also a very popular crop.

I’ve had some experience growing potatoes since I was a young child. In my hometown, it is a common educational program for children. My first experience in a potato garden was in kindergarten when I was around 5 years old. After that, I joined the potato garden project with my old classmates and teachers in the second grade. It was a very nice project that continued until the last grade of elementary school. During the harvest season, we would cook curry with our mothers and enjoy it with classmates and families.

I still remember an important lesson that included our homeroom teacher. Our class had borrowed a garden spot from one of our classmate’s grandfathers, who owned a farm. He was very kind and helpful, sharing his farming knowledge with us. We planted potatoes after an interesting lecture from him, where he taught us very well. However, we didn’t take care of the weeds during summer break.

When we returned to the garden in early autumn, our classmate’s grandfather gathered us and gave us a serious lecture. It left a strong impression on me because our teacher, a highly respected person, apologized to him sincerely. It surprised me to see my teacher bowing and apologizing that much.

What touched me even more was the classmate’s grandfather’s comment. He told us that we hadn’t returned to the garden during the summer, and no one had tended to it. He had to do the weeding and watering for our garden sometimes.

He taught us that “some vegetables can't grow by themselves without our care. You all thought that after planting the potatoes or seeds, they would just grow on their own. That’s wrong and irresponsible. Respecting nature and taking care of it are our responsibilities. You can’t just eat curry without doing anything.”

That was a deep educational moment for me, and I really appreciated my classmate’s grandfather. He taught us basic life skills and the concept of food. After his lecture, he returned to his usual gentle self, and we continued to enjoy our garden and harvest picnics. Even the mothers looked impressed.

A few years later, our garden project ended. The beautiful farming field turned into a concrete road and housing. A typical large supermarket now stands where the garden used to be. Every time I see the property, I think of my classmate’s grandfather, even though there’s no green space left. I’ll never forget the important lesson he taught us.

Back to my current potato story. Our harvested potatoes are small but delicious. They taste great! One of the potatoes even looked like a heart, which I found very cute. The heart-shaped potato came from the garden, along with my fond memories of the past. I think I’ll make curry with these potatoes soon!

じゃがいもの収穫と子どもの頃の畑経験の思い出

最近じゃがいもの収穫を半分ほど終えたところです。私たちの畑は深さがないのでじゃがいもはあまり大きくなりませんが、味はいいです。近所の農場で買ったおいしいじゃがいもを植えました。私は赤い見た目のじゃがいもよりも黄色いじゃがいもが好きです。この地域では、じゃがいもの生産が多く、先住民の方たちもじゃがいもを主食としていたらしいです。私の故郷でもじゃがいもは人気の野菜です。

わりと小さな頃からじゃがいもを育てる経験をしてきました。故郷では子供たちへの畑の教育の一環としてじゃがいもを育てるプログラムが多いです。私のいちばん初めのじゃがいも畑の経験は幼稚園で５歳くらいだったと思います。その後、２年生の頃、担任の先生とクラスメートたちでじゃがいもを育て始めました。収穫時にはお母さんたちと一緒にカレーライスを作って食べました。

担任の先生といっしょにそのじゃがいも畑から学んだことの中で、忘れられないできごとがあります。クラスメートの農家を営んでいるおじいさんが所有している農地の一角をお借りして、自分たちのじゃがいも畑プロジェクトがはじまりました。おじいさんはたいへん優しく協力的で、たくさんの知識を共有してくださいました。とても興味深い講義のあと、いっしょにじゃがいもを植えながらいろいろと教えてくださいました。しかし、夏休み中に誰も手入れをせずに過ごしてしまったことがありました。

夏休み後、秋に畑に戻ったところ、おじいさんが私たちを集めてお話をしてくださいました。その時、みんなから信頼され尊敬されている担任の先生がおじいさんに深々と頭を下げ、謝っている光景がとても印象的でした。

クラスメートのおじいさんの言葉は私の胸に刺さりました。夏休みの間、誰にも世話をされずに雑草がボーボーになったじゃがいも畑をおじいさんがときどき雑草取りをしたり、カラカラの畑に水撒きをしてくれていたのです。

おじいさんは「野菜の中には放置されると育たないものもあります。君たちは野菜を植えたり種を蒔けば、あとは勝手にひとりでに育つものだと思っていませんか？それはありえないことですよ。自然を尊敬して、自分たちが植えたものに責任を持って世話をするべきです。それもしないで、ただ単にカレーライスを楽しむだなんてありえないことですよ。」

ものすごい深い教育を受けたと思いました。そのようなことを伝えてくれたクラスメートのおじいさんに感謝しています。生活スキルの基本や食物の概念を教えていただきました。おじいさんはそのお話を終えるとまた元の優しいおじいさんに戻っていました。私たちはその後もじゃがいも畑を続けました。お母さんたちもたいへん感銘を受けたようです。

数年たち、卒業とともにじゃがいも畑プロジェクトは終了しました。美しい農場の畑は今では道路になり家が立ち並んでいます。よくある大きなスーパーマーケットがかつての畑の上に建っています。私たちが借りていたじゃがいも畑の場所もその下になってしまいました。その土地を見るといつも、あのおじいさんのお話を思い出します。もうそこにはかつての美しい緑の畑はまったくないのですが…。教えていただいた大切な話を忘れることは決してないと思います。

現在のじゃがいも畑の話に戻ります。収穫したじゃがいもは小さいですが、味はいいです。おいしい！ハートの形をしたじゃがいもがひとつありました。かわいらしいです。このハートのじゃがいもが私の過去の畑の思い出といっしょに出てきました。このじゃがいもを使って近々カレーライスを作ろうと考えています！
