One of my favorite is eating a "healthy" meal after gardening π
Hi, this is me again Khoola,
Well, this week we have favorites as a theme for the #GroVid22 and @dreemport collaboration challenge with HiveGarden!
Here is a link as always: GroVid22 Challenge 2 for HiveGarden with DreemPort: Favorites
Tell us about your FAVORITE things about Gardens!
My favorite thing about gardening is looking at my wife's face as she admires the flowers and the garden. Yeah, that would be the truth... I do gardening because she loves it.
On a personal level, my favorite thing about gardens are doing experiments. One of my experiments is: can I can grow a Giant Sunflower on sand-based soil (I am living beside the sea). π€
Things you may not know about Sunflowers
- The seeds when roasted pair good with beer π€£.
- Sunbutter if you haven't heard of it... this is an alternative to peanut butter. π§
- The flower head is actually made of hundreds or thousands of flowers. src
- Sunflower is easy to grow π² (though my neighbor failed π€£)
My wife bought this online. First thought... roasting it then buy beer πΊ.
I don't trust anything bought online, but I don't really have a choice because of Covid. A bag of Jumbo/Giant sunflower seed cost me about 2$ as far as I remember.
Started going online, researching heavily on how to grow it. After numerous research materials, I came up with this.
How not to grow sunflowers by @khoola π«
- A shallow plastic container to put my very own compost soil. I prefer a transparent one to see if the roots are out.
- Plant the seeds in an organized manner. Doesn't need to be, I just like it that way.
- Water it π¦οΈ
- Cover it with plastic to keep the moisture in. π
Truth be told it didn't grow after that!!! π
I found that just putting the seed in a wet towel does the trick. Had 20 seeds sprouting within that week of covering them. I pick the best ones and put them in a plant bag. 3/5 grew well and transfered them in front of my house! π
Yup that is my daughter running around without her slippers. For some reason she always loses them. Grr... π
My Giant Sunflower experiment ended with 3 plants growing at about 4 feet each with an average of 3 full blooms. Well, although it didn't grow as big as I wish it would but atleast it grew.
I wasn't Home when the flowers seeds where harvested π πΊ. Guess that concludes my experiment, as sunflowers dies after full bloom π.
But that is not the end of my experiments. I also have a Mango tree in a relatively large "flower pot" inside my house. π€£ I am trying to make a small tree... unsure what I am going to do if i succeed.
This is it for now! See you guys next week and thank you for reading!

Thank you very much! I appreciate you dropping by!
How does sunbutter compare to peanut butter?
Awesome post by the way.
Peanutbutter is better... sunbutter is healthier π
Thanks for dropping by, I appreciate it!
Hmm I always wondered why the sunflowers that we bought always die out. I'll tell my wife to quit buying sunflowers ππ
I appreciate you dropping by... thank you!
Yeah, sunflowers die after blooming... american rose lives longer. It is still alive back home but still I can't make a cutting grow.
Will experiment some more when I get home.
Awesome my wife is crazy about planting since the pandemic. We have a word for women who are into planting. A word that was just invented during the pandemic. " Plantita" which a slang for aunt who loves to plant or "Plantito" for uncle who loves to plant π.
Sorry for the late reply... was busy with work. I actually replied earlier... guess it didn't push through LOL! π€£

My favorite thing about gardening is seeing the results and praising those that can make them grow. You can keep all the hard work lol
I had no idea there was sunflower butter, one more interesting piece of information for me. Thank you.

Thank you for dropping by, I really appreciate it!
An interesting experiment the sun flowers did a lot better than I thought they would growing in sandy soil
They actually did, they were able to get to full maturity and bloom. The only setback as I see it is that it can't grow more than 4 feet.
Thank you very much! I really appreciate it! π
But even if only 4 foot they still did well
EXCITING!
thank you for this post and a look at the cool things going on in your world.
I love the wet towel technique for jump starting seeds!
Thank you sir for coming by.. I really appreciate it :)

Lovely sunflowers π»π»π»Did you make your own sunflower butter? Now what a curiosity s this at the bottom of your post...π ... I have to know... hehe... did you lose a bet???
This? It's nothing just me keeping my end of a bargain... I ask for something and this was suppose to be what the person wants in return (as far as I understand it). Sadly, it wasn't worth it tho... !lolz π€£
Sunbutter not yet... sunflowers are not exactly native here... but, peanuts are so it is relatively easier to to make sweet, freshly ground and crunchy peanut butter π€©.

mmm...ok me thinks you should move on from it ... π€ Not sure why anyone would ask for such a thingπ
4-months later.
*I see nothing but a field of sun flowers.
(Alternate universe) *Khoola uses the seeds as a ingredient on a super special dish.
I've eaten salted sunflower seeds before, but never the giant variety.
GHAD LOL @takuris I have missed you! I thought you were never coming back! π How are ya!
Giant variety doesn't grow well in PH... unsure which dish uses sunflower seeds. But I'll think of one!
Love the GIANT 4 ft sunflower plants haha... but at least they are healthy and flowered beautifully for you. Your sprouuting trick reminds me of when I was at school and we all had to sprout beans at home for homework lol. That was fun! Your daughter is precious by the way...barefoot is a great way to be if you can ...think of all the pressure points being massaged every day as she runs around :-) Now this I love:
How special is that? Spoken like somebody who loves his wife very much πI bet you can't wait to be home again! I enjoyed this post, thanks for sharing.
You are certainly right about that friend!
Thank you for stopping by I really appreciate it! Take Care Always!
You too.
