Seedlings moving out crop May 2023.jpg

On Monday I got the laundry started, kitchen cleaned up, and started sorting out seedlings to go to the cold frame.

Cold frames - 2nd one filled1 crop May 2023.jpg

I had to open the 2nd cold frame. We’d not used this one because the chipmunks tunneling under the plastic have made it so uneven. I had to use a lot of sticks and stones to level the trays so they would hold water evenly.

I made about 18 trips in and out and was sure missing my general helper! Next year we’ll have to repair the bottom, but I think we said that last year…

I got them all outside by 11AM.

Office - empty again crop May 2023.jpg

The first goal had been to empty the office window so I could take down the infrastructure for window washing on the 29th.

There were a lot of plants that were ready to go outside from the porch. I soon emptied all these shelves.

These were next. Once I get the shelving taken down, I can set up the dehydrators and get them running in the afternoons.

Roundtop - full again crop May 2023.jpg

The roundtop was full of the things I’d started on Saturday and tender things like tomatoes and peppers and melons.

Dining window - what's left crop May 2023.jpg

The overflow filled 2½ lights in this window. The large stuff on the left are some plants I’m keeping for a friend until she can plant.

By the time I got all this done, I was wiped out. I rested for a few hours and then finished the laundry and helped my brother make stir-fry for supper.

Woodshed - collarties and wall done crop May 2023.jpg

The contractor showed up mid afternoon and got the last collar ties up and finished the inside wall. He needs to rehang the drying rack in this area and make supports for storing the fencing rails over the wood.

On Tuesday my general help will come for an extra day. We will go to check out wood chips at a nearby wood mill and then haul the pea fences to the garden. My helper friend should be here by then and he and I will be making amendment. My general helper will water all the seedlings in the cold frames and in the house.

When my helper friend leaves at 11, hopefully we will have finished the amendment making and my general helper the watering and she and I can start laying out the garden and maybe get some fences up.

She leaves at noon so I ought to be about wiped out by then.

Wow! So many plants! That’s a lot of work! You need to pace yourself.

I bet you are thrilled to have the plants finally outside. That was a lot of work for you in one morning. I am sure you must be exhausted. The plants look wonderful!

Most of them are doing well. My helper watered them all this morning so they should be fine out there.

You can have light through the windows again!

No kidding! And air, now I can put screens in.

Wow!! Your starts look amazing & the set up too. Happy planting!

Thanks!

Oh wow! Did you have any clear windows left in the house? I wonder if my husband will let me do this! 🤔

Well, let's put it this way: There are 42 windows in this passive solar heated house, and I have seedlings in 10. But there are house plants in an additional 21... So yeah there are a few, mostly on the second floor.

That's a lot of windows! We have 9 plus two sliding door windows. Mind you, keeping the sun out here is generally more important.

Great setup, I like the shelves with lights by the windows! I need to build a cold frame like yesterday! What type of climate are you in?
