Big garden - garlic crop April 2023.jpg

Monday I had to take the car in to be rejected on inspection. The rear tires didn’t pass, so now I must buy 4 new tires for it. I’d planned to do that in the fall… I got laundry done and checked on all the seedlings so my helper friend could water them all on Tuesday when he comes.

In the evening I wandered around the yard to see what was new. The garlic in the Big garden has grown a lot since I last looked.

Big garden - parsnips, horseradish, rhubarb crop April 2023.jpg

At the other end of the Big garden, I discovered 2 parsnips we missed when we dug in February. The horseradish on the back left is well up and the rhubarb looks very good.

Crabapple blooming crop April 2023.jpg

Next to the Big garden the crabapple has started flowering. My neighbor who brought me home when I dropped off the car is an avid birder. She says she’s not seen the orioles yet but that’s no surprise as it’s pretty early for them. But it looks like they will miss the flowers on the crabapple again this year.

Crabapple - poet's eye narcissus crop April 2023.jpg

Under the crabapple, the poet’s eye narcissus have come up. It’s been a decade or more since they flowered, but they still come up.

Crabapple - perennial sweet peas crop April 2023.jpg

The perennial sweet peas I planted years ago are up. This garden seriously needs attention this year.

MacIntosh - dwarf comfrey flowers crop April 2023.jpg

Next to the crabapple, under the MacIntosh, the dwarf comfrey is flowering. It’s done very well here.

South - violets crop April 2023.jpg

In the South gardens, in the walkway garden the violets are lovely.

New East - mock orange, tulips, soapwort, iris crop April 2023.jpg

In the New East garden the plants have come up and it’s filling in nicely. The tulips survived the deluge on Sunday, but the double daffodils mostly did not. The mock orange on the right is leafing out well.

East Shed - rose, violets, tulips crop April 2023.jpg

The 7 Sisters rose in the East Shed garden has started to leaf out. It has winter kill that’s needs pruned off.

East Shed - peony crop April 2023.jpg

Also in the East Shed garden, the peony is well up but probably won’t flower as it needs more sun than it gets.

South Herb - W. and E. almonds flowering crop April 2023.jpg

In the South Herb garden the flowering almonds, 31 years old, are flowering. I am always amazed at the difference micro climate makes. These 2 are only 6’ apart, but they flower so differently.

South Herb - lily of valley flowers crop April 2023.jpg

Also in the South Herb garden the first lily of the valley has opened.

Swamp - skunk cabbage crop April 2023.jpg

In the swamp the skunk cabbage is well up and the brook flowing well from all the rain.

On Tuesday I plan to mow the yard before it rains again at 1PM, and my helper friend will water the seedlings and house plants then come out and weed somewhere. Or maybe I’ll have him start the new garden at the end of the woodshed.

The gardens and flowers look so lovely. I will have to look in my Raspberry patch to see if all the Violets are coming yet. I will collect the flowers and find something to make with them. Last year I made Violet and Lilac jelly which was fun to do. You really do have quite a green thumb.

I made violet and lilac jelly one year too. But i don't eat much jelly, so probably won't make it again.

My brain got all sorts of weirded out when I read the inspection sentence. I've never lived in a state that had such things, it sounds like a major inconvenience for sure, sorry that you have to buy a new set of tires before you planned on it.

But that garlic😍! I'm heading out to give mine a fish and kelp emulsion feeding, but since it has only been out from underneath the snow for a little over a week, it is nowhere near the size of yours. Soooo pretty!

Hope you are having a great day!
