Transforming the Forest into a 🌲Forest Garden🌳

in HiveGarden13 hours ago (edited)

As the end of my trip to California approached I had one final thing to check of my to do list: a work day at the mountain garden.

Rainy days and lack of transportation made this task impossible until the final weekend before my flight back to Argentina. None the less we packed lunches, snacks, and tools then headed to the mountains.

This is a project on family land that my mom & I have been working on for a few years now. The land is mostly oak forest with buckeyes and even some elderberry sprinkled throughout. One day there will be a house here but, at the moment there is a nice out house, a place to camp & open air kitchen.

The goal of the garden is to produce hardy herbs and native flowers. Our efforts are frequently threatened by the herd of deer who share this land too. I can't get too mad at them, they have as much right to eat as we do to garden.

As it is the heart of winter in the Sierra Nevadas of California, the main chore of the day is to replenish the soil with a nice layer of earth & a protective covering of bark from the forest itself.

I hope all is well with you, dear reader, and that your winter (or summer) garden is coming along nicely. Next time I write here I will be back in my own garden and living up the colors & energies of summer!

I was smiling when I read this part ❤️ Same for my greens and bird visitors ...

totally! we all share this planet. the birds and deer bring a lot of joy to our lives so, they can have their share of the garden too. so glad to hear your perspective as well!
