FEEDING MY WORM FARM - How i feed my worms

CANVA (23).png

So everyday my husband makes himself a smoothie for breakfast. Every morning i chop fruit for the girls lunches and put it in the compost bowl to take outside to the compost.

I also need to feed the worms.

so i rinse the blender to get most milk out. And pack in a few things the worms like to eat.

A quick blend and i throw it in under the bedding blanket.

I have to wash the blender anyway.. and its not like the food was rotten... just the ends of breakfast and dinner prep.

WHAT TO WORMS LIKE TO EAT

My worms are picky and watermelon seems to be their favourite. but they will eat most vegetable scraps and the seem to LOVE plain unbleached cardboard

best things are fruit and vegetables and legumes. nothing rotting. put that in compost

How to prepare the food

chopped up is best. as more worms can attack the same amount of food if it is spread out. then you can get food over all the bin layer but not be so much that they can't eat it. You want the food to be eaten in a day or two or the bin will get yucky. They don't like yucky food. If it goes gross you should take it out.

THINGS TO AVOID

Don't add meat, animal products, dairy, or greasy and oily foods to the worm bin.

Avoiding citrus and onion and high acid foods (tomatos and pineapple) are a good idea too.

NEVER FEED

things that would be poisonous to you. So treated sawdust, grass/plants that you have sprayed with chemicals.
anything with "dewormer" in it... like... duh...
the bleached paper - infact anything highly printed is not good. Plain cardboard ok

My Blender in Action

So today i got some celery leaves, some cucumber ends, one small cherry tomato, some grapes and the apple cores.

Note the rest of the compost/chicken food is in the compost bowl to go out to the compost.

My worms still have a little left from yesterday so i have not given them heaps of smoothie.

SUMMER TIP -

In summer you can add a couple of icecubes to the blender. It will cool down the food and cool down the bin. Stop it from smelling as bad too for a few hours. :-) if it is blended with the food that is better for the worms. They like a little bit of water (not too much) and that will help keep the bin ...moist.... lol

my worms get used on the garden. I can use the worm poo and the water from the bins to feed the plants. its great. sometimes worm eggs will be in the water and that adds a few especially to my pots. Which, as they have mulch on top will be an ok environment for a few worms.

thanks for reading

I love reading about people who keep worms. It's something I want to do. I've experimented with creating mini worm bins indoors and once I even got far enough to the point where they started laying eggs. I don't know why it always fails though.

awww... i bought live worms from the shops. (local hardware store or bought from a nursery) Only time i have trouble is if i neglect them for weeks or let them have a really really not subtropical day with no watering.

mine have never been inside though. always in the garden,

I've seen some very cool looking indoor worm bins disguised as ottomans or like small end tables. If properly cared for, it shouldn't smell, right? I once made a compost pile in the kitchen and kept it all winter.

yeah, if its properly cared for it shouldn't smell. Mine doesn't. Just need to add smaller bits of food often so it doesn't rot. Keep it damp but not wringing wet. and ok air flow. It should be fine. I too have seen little bench ones and things. Just would not be enough for us.. lol.

Nice one, this is something I tell everyone to start. I find it best to grind the food up as well, It seems to get eaten alot faster

100% sure do. makes sense to me as the worms need to do less to eat it and more worms can eat it in a shorter space of time. much better than throwing in a whole carrot or something.

In summer the worms really seem to appreciate the cool sludge. we can get some jaw dropping blasting heat days here like opening a oven door when you step out side. Gotta keep them cool somehow.

This is quite interesting! I thought one will just leave the worms on their own and feed on what they can find in the soil but I guess its different when you are growing your own for your garden, you also got to take care of them. How many times a week do you feed them?

Oh for sure, in the garden they will cruise around and eat from the soil. But in a worm farm they have limited options. And they poop a lot... Here is the worm farm i got from our local Bunnings. It has 3 more tiers that are not on here at the moment.

Forgot to add, i feed them when the food is looking low... so 3 times a week perhaps??? as i don't add too much or it goes yuckky. I always have some cardboard or something in there for them too that they can eat if they run out of tasty treats.

Worms create the best fertilizer!

Lucky worms (^_^) maybe I should try farming worms too!

they are easy to look after if you don't let bugs in the bin and can keep them at a good temperature.

Thank you for that information, I'll keep that in mind, and it will definitely help a lot in my plan to farm worms.

It's kinda different for me upon reading this blog. At the same time I'm happy that these worms are well taken care of. They deserve it because they give so much advantage of our plants' development.
