First Veggie Batch Planted!

Yay... we are ready to start using our wicking stations for our first attempt at growing veggies in them. We are starting off pretty small... nothing too elaborate at the moment, so a handful of leafy veggies and things like that. We weren't exactly sure how much space each thing would need, so better to err on the less crowded side for the start until we get a bit more experience with this!

The first layer of mushroom compost that my father in law filled the containers with had settled after the water was added into the bottom, so a quick trip to the local hardware/garden centre for bags of mushroom compost... and a quick but stinky trip back home, with the kids complaining!

So, each container could take another two bags... for a total of eight bags used, and so we would have four more bags leftover for a different spot in the garden.

Bags slashed and stabbed open... and then levelled and watered down a bit. A very healthy looking black soil colour, but something that seems to dry out quite easily in the sun.

Just looking towards the back fence... another task awaits, getting a pair of stakes on either side of each of the fledgling fruit trees. All five are definitely alive, as the two last stragglers have started budding and sprouting little green shoots on their sticky sticks! But this isn't todaý's task... one thing at a time!

A future spot for something... I think that paving it over and having a little sitting area with a little table and umbrella would be awesome. But my wife reminded me that we have already had this discussion, and that this would be a spot for a berry bush or two! Oooops...

So, I guess this is where the rest of the mushroom compost will be going!

Anyway, the following three photos are our little fledgling baby veggie plants. Two eggplants, four lettuce spots, two silverbeet bunches, sage, and chives. Let's see what will survive the experiment!

... and we have one empty container left... probably will be tomato or zucchini... we eat a lot of those, so that would be the most handy to have around in the backyard!

Too true! We use them in most of our cooking, and we can make sauce to keep for later!

Yes, the soil is nice and dark and rich, so hopefully it will take!

You are right 🥰🙏

Interesting. I am going to be curious to see how that mushroom compost works. Usually I just use black dirt or something like that. I haven't added soil to my raised bed in forever though.

This was the recommendation from our parents-in-laws, it was pretty cheap too... Do you rotate the veggies?

No, not really. I probably should though. I've kind of given up on my garden at this point. I just don't have the time for it.
