Garden Journal: Planting 2nd Batch of Tomatoes for the Year, Installing Fence around my Calamansi, and Some Crops Update

in HiveGardenlast year (edited)

Greetings!

When I retired from my 8 to 5 job two years ago to try my luck in countryside living one of my goals was to plant vegetables and eventually attain vegetable sustainability. Now, I realize that it is easier said than done, but, if you love what you are doing the word "hard" is none existent because of the joy that is brought by success and that's what happening to me right now. I now know that it is not easy to attain "sustainability" but I do love what I am doing so it automatically ignores how hard it is.

My current tomato plants are starting to bear fruits and soon they will wither so this early I am now planting the second batch of tomatoes for the year. In planting the tomatoes, I adapted a technique that I used more than a year ago (check the images below).

This month the rice harvesting season has just concluded and it means people with goats will let their goats roam around rice fields. It means that I have to put fences around my Calamansi so that the goats will not be able to get close to my Calamansi. I used hog wire for the fence (check the images below).

And here is the first roll of the hog wire that I just installed

One of the advantages of planting calamansi is that it is not a very demanding plant when it comes to fertilizer. Calamansi can be fertilized quarterly with an amount of 50g-100g of ammonium sulfate (21-0-0) or urea (46-0-0). The amount of fertilizer can be increased after two years. Check the images below on how I fertilize my calamansi plants. I used UREA (at 50g on each plant).

The joy of being a farmer is when you see your crops start to germinate, develop leaves, and eventually grow last September 24, 2023, I planted my first-ever cassava plant (my very first ever). And now they already developed some leaves (which make me very happy and excited).

And here it is now nine days after I planted it last September 24, 2023. It already has multiple leaves growing simultaneously. It is such a joy looking at your crops growing healthy.

I didn't know that tomatoes were germinated that way, I was always curious. So I'm going to try at home, thanks for the information.

I agree, it is the greatest joy ever. Thank you for dropping by.

By the way, this will be the third time that I am going to germinate my tomatoes, it is so satisfying seeing them germinate. Have a nice day ahead.

Things seem easy at first but can be challenging. Glad you are still very positive of your decision to start a sustainable living in the countryside. Your cassava is sprouting, yay! I wonder how long it will take for it to grow taller and start bearing fruits/root crops🤔

 last year

Yep, I am glad that I am still seeing positive future after my decision to live in the countryside. Cassava takes a long time before you can harvest, about 10-14 months. But you can cook its leaves as "Laing".

That's the good thing, no regrets :)

Oh, I thought only gabi can be cooked as laing. I am yet to try or taste cassava leaves cooked that way :)

Same here, at first, I thought gabi is the only one cooked as laing. You've got to try it, it is as good as laing na gabi.

I never thought of growing tomatoes that way, and I guess why not? :)

They do germinate, I have tried it twice already, this is now the third time that I am going to plant tomato this way.

I am glad that you like bit. Have a nice day ahead.

I'm happy to see someone planting plants and seeds from the fruit itself, if it works then it's very profitable, you don't have to buy ready-made seeds.
Hopefully it will bear much fruit in the future.

Yeah, hopefully they will bear a lot of fruits. Thank you for dropping by. Have a nice day ahead.

I love the joy you find in gardening. It IS a hard job, but sometimes a 9 - 5 job is way harder because there is no joy in it. Thanks so much for being such a valuable part of our community, @afterglow. Your passion is inspiring and your engagement does not go unnoticed.

Thank you. I agree that it would be harder if there is no joy in it. It is always a pleasure to be part of this amazing community, I learned a lot about gardening, and sometimes the members' blogs would remind me of some of my plans that are already forgotten. I hope that my passion for gardening will not fade away since gardening is one of the means I am using to support my family. Thank you for dropping by @riverflows and have a nice day ahead.
