Some game enthusiasts call DEADBOLT a 2D Hitman, due to its similarity with the classic HITMAN series. As a big fan of the franchise, I agree with some aspects of the gameplay and the ambiance of certain scenarios. It seems like every hitman game needs a bustling nightclub with drunk or crazy targets. In DEADBOLT, you'll encounter many things that can simulate the other universe, such as Gang Member Zombies in the first chapter of the game.
The first part is quite straightforward, with not many significant challenges that would make you die several times. I believe the first part is just to introduce all the gameplay and mechanics present in DEADBOLT, exploring the possibility of playing a complete stealth game or simply eliminating everything in sight. This mode might be harder in some stages where you can't attract too much attention. Otherwise, you'll face a barrage of bullets, and yes, our character only has one chance; there's no dodging bullets or undoing something in the same mission.
For those who love character customization, unfortunately, we don't have that here. But you can acquire and switch up a vast arsenal, from REVOLVERS and RIFLES to SCYTHES and KNIVES. You can use almost anything to eliminate your targets or complete your objectives. Sometimes, collecting all souls isn't necessary; other times, the focus might be on eliminating a specific target or retrieving information from a certain item.
The pixel art graphics are quite satisfying, along with the elegant fluidity of the game's animation. Don't be fooled by the modest pixels in the introduction; as the game progresses and the action ramps up, you'll see that everything works as it should. A great example of simple yet well-executed design.
I should warn you that it might be a bit addictive, the way you can do almost anything, from entering ventilation ducts to navigate the entire building in search of easy targets, or even eliminating them while they use the toilet. It's amusing to watch some unique actions like this, and it's worth seeing how it works. Just wait for the target to feel the need to use the bathroom, and when they sit down, interact with the sewer pipe connected to the bathroom, and our Reaper does his job without any issues.
Don't worry about some exposure to deaths or blood on the walls; you can disable all of that in the settings. But I wouldn't recommend it, as you might miss some interesting things without the effect, like how far the lighting of that room extends to the next. Of course, you can just shoot the lights or turn off the switch, waiting for an unsuspecting target to try and light up the room.
Later on, it won't be enough just to shoot and hit the enemy, as with some Vampires. Some versions can revive after a certain time if their artifact isn't destroyed in time. The game always indicates where their artifact might be hidden, always well-guarded by lesser security.
To wrap up this post, DEADBOLT manages to capture the essence of the classic HITMAN games, taking the best parts while possibly omitting some less polished aspects. Unlike the extensive levels in Hitman: Blood Money, you might spend hours trying a level due to its map size, but finish it in seconds if you wait in a certain position where all the targets gather.
