Street Fighter II Ported to Atari XE/XL 8-Bit Computer

When I first saw that someone ported Street Fighter II to the Atari XE/XL 8-Bit computer, I was EXTREMELY skeptical. How could this be accomplished? It was impossible. Right? Apparently not because you can download it right now and play it on real hardware.

We All Know What Street Fighter II Is Right?

I am not going to go through the history of Street Fighter II, if you are not familiar with Capcom’s most popular fighting game then head over to your favorite search engine and read up. Depending on how you feel about fighting games it is either great or amazing.

I am sure there are some gamers out there that do not understand the hype, but they are surely in the minority about Street Fighter II.

You pick one fighter out of a selection of 8 (more in variations of Street Fighter II) and then take on the remaining fighters. Defeat them then you move onto the bosses.

Doing the Impossible

Before we get too excited, the Atari XE/XL port is based on the Nintendo Game Boy version of Street Fighter II. That means graphically, things are toned down a bit, obviously, and from the video embedded above by The New Retro Show on YouTube the animation is a little on the slow side.

Also, the colors are off as well but for the hardware, this is impressive. Worth checking out if you are a fan of Atari XE/XL or Street Fighter II, or both.

I am a huge fan of Street Fighter II, it was the first one-on-one fighting game I remember playing and enjoying. That genre before SF2 came out was more traditional sports karate and such – not my cup of tea, at all. Capcom knocked this out of the park in arcades, then again repeatedly, on home consoles.

What was your favorite one-on-one fighting game? Let me know in the comments below.

This game is interesting, but I don't think I could pull off any combos on a PC keyboard; my fingers would definitely break.
