Half Life Alyx is undoubtedly a masterpiece and I think we all know that. But in the same way I highly recommend you to play the previous games so you can understand the story, otherwise you will be quite lost. The story of Half Life Alyx is set before the events of Half Life 2, so basically it would be Half Life 1 (not counting the expansions), Half Life Alyx, and then Half Life 2 and all its episodes. That would be the right way to play and understand the story, I really am a fan of the Half Life saga, they are my favorite videogames.

I'll probably play through the older games at some point. I was thinking of instead of playing Half Life 1 I would play the Black Mesa fan remake that seems pretty cool. At least it will have modern graphics. I guess starting off the saga in the middle is a little bit weird but that's how it is sometimes.
Starting playing Black Mesa is not a bad idea, it's a very good remake, it's even more enjoyable than the original game and it follows it almost 100%. I would recommend it too, but it's also nice to play the original.
I'll take that coming from the Half Life guru himself. I've had the game on my wishlist for a while so I'll pick it up on the next sale probably. Cheers!
