Once you get into the 20s with a Rogue in World of Warcraft the class fantasy really starts to come to life. At this point you have access to all of your important tools like stealth, pickpocket, distract and vanish. These are tools that can really secure your survival but they also set the grounds for some classic Rogue moments. I had one of those when visiting Fenris Isle in Silverpine Forest.
Fenris Isle
Fenris Isle is an island in Silverpine Forest that is infested with Undead Gnolls. I knew the dangers of this place which is why I postponed going here until I was higher level and had access to more of my skills. I don't regret it.
When you get here you're simply tasked with killing Gnolls to collect some substance from them. There's also a random drop from the Gnolls in the form of a talking head that starts another quest line. This has you going into the Gnoll compound to reunite the severed head with the rest of his buried body.
Going into any kind of compound infested with enemies is a death sentence in Hardcore World of Warcraft. Even if these enemies are 3-5 levels beneath me they are still dangerous if I end up pulling to many. I did have a close encounter inside the main building where I pulled three level 19 enemies at once, and I had to use both my defensive skill, bandages and health potions to feel safe.
Rogue Moments
Inside this main building is where I experienced my beautiful Rogue Moments. Rogues are probably the only class that can take on a mission like this alone and come out on the surviving end. I ended up stealthing through the whole compound while distracting the enemies and pick pocketing all of them on my way. Only picking a fight when I was positive it was absolutely safe.
This is still risky as enemies can sometimes see through my stealth or resist my pick pocketing which would have ended up with me having to fight them. There's a lower chance of that happening since the enemies are a few levels below me. An unplanned pull could be disastrous and if it were to happen I would still have access to my get out of jail free card: Vanish. This lets me go invisible during combat and escape safely. I'd never have gone on this mission without it.
I didn't get any amazing rewards from this outside of experience but its some of the most fun I've had on my Hardcore journey so far. I hope there's more compounds for me to infiltrate in the future.

Navigating a compound full of enemies sounds nerve-wracking. But it's clear that your preparation and skill made all the difference.
