Fallout 4 review in 2024! Is this game still good after Starfield's release?

[Charisma 10] Why yes, yes it is.

However you feel about Bethesda’s games and their quality in storytelling, you can’t deny that Fallout 4 did pretty damn well compared to other Fallout games, even compared to Fallout: New Vegas (though i will review this game because it is still everyone’s best Fallout in series, mine included). I would say Fallout 4 is still holding up pretty damn well in 2024 and beyond, even if the story part and RPG part of the game is dumbed-down, it has a very strong gameplay loop focused on scavenging and building via a rich post-apocalyptic world and its scrap economy. But I will keep it a fairly short review about the game so you can have a good short read about it and draw your own conclusion (and maybe give your own thoughts in the comments).

GAMEPLAY

The gameplay is pretty damn good, even if the RPG element got dumbed down purely because it has a strong scavenging, looting and crafting/building loop .Yes you can ignore it for the most part if you're playing for the story, but i recommend you to give it a try since a lot of the game’s feature and quests are relied on this gameplay loop and even to the Minutemen too. The gunplay still holds up and the perks (albeit a bit streamlined) are still fun to play and experiment with. The voiced protagonist though, it’s a downgrade for a Fallout game. Only 4 options for every dialogue choice, really? I get what they are going for and i get why it seems to be good on paper but it just limits the RPG aspect and the story’s choices even more since you don’t really feel like playing as your character, you still feel like playing as Nate and Nora and Bethesda knew this too since they reverted the changes on Fallout 76 and Starfield. There’s also modding in this game too and I won't probably review the modding part of any game in future’s review, it’s pretty darn hard to ignore it since it’s a Bethesda game and well... It's pretty good! You can pretty much customize anything in the game with mods and they have been making it really easy to add custom mods made by other people both on PC and on Consoles. Just head on to the Mods section in the main menu and start modding right away! Though like Skyrim on moddings, I can't really say the same with Creation Club content. Yes, you can pay bethesda for “Premium mods” and yes you will get a sorta similar quality compared to the game itself, but from my experience, Creation Club mods are not really worth it. Still, it is pretty good.

STORY

It’s pretty good for your first playthrough (especially if it's your first time playing a Fallout/Bethesda game), but after the second time or on future playthrough you will start seeing a lot of holes through the game’s plot and the faction’s motives and presence in the game. And if you play the game for like the 30th time you will start to get really annoyed on how Bethesda tells the story through the introduction quest and the important story bits. The factions are alright but I don't know what’s the point of the Brotherhood of Steel in this game. It seems like the Railroad should be in their spotlight since they kinda don’t have a reason to be in the Commonwealth. The Minutemen are pretty cool too but of course it got plagued by Preston Garvey’s infinite bombardment of settlement quests, but they are still cool since it’s basically your own faction built by you. Overall, it is an alright story, but for a Fallout game it’s disappointing, at least compared to New Vegas.

CONCLUSION

Fallout 4 still holds up pretty well in 2024 even with its story though I fear it will start to show its age in future because of the story, though i have a high hope that the Fallout players will preserve this game just like how Bethesda preserves Skyrim with its billionth release with paid mods.
