Trying out Crypto Shots and Running out of Ammo

in Hive Gaming2 years ago

Intro

This is my review of Crypto Shots, a 3D play and earn first person shooter on Hive, for the Crypto Shots contestreview Crypto Shots for the contest and I wanted to try my hand at it too.. I saw @kstreet

I went into the game blind aside from reading kstreet’s post and the contest so I didn’t know anything about the game except you shoot drones and have to save your ammo.

The game has some NFTs for guns and ammo and you can play and earn BOOM token but I’m not interested in that currently so I went with the Free to Play opt to try out the game.

Gameplay

Level 1

The game opens with 3 difficulty options. I’m not sure how different they are but I went with easy for my first try.

It immediately drops me into a hallway with a drone shooting at me. I have played shooters before, so I naturally had my hands on the mouse and WASD and I start blasting. There was a tooltip at the start that said ESC lets me see my controls but ESC didn’t work for me, it was P that brought up the pause menu.

The game lags a lot more than I expected, making me bumble around and miss a bunch of shots. I pause it and close my other tabs. After it runs with no issue. You can’t do anything with the boxes yet.

There’s no map, so I’m wandering around looking for enemies. At the top, there is a compass that tells you the direction of enemies. The blue Ys are health apparently. I didn’t notice what they were the first time since I didn’t take any damage. I find the rest of the enemies and shoot them down, then the level ends. You can claim $BOOM if you have NFTs. On to the second level.

Level 2

I spawn in and hear enemies shooting. At least they are not on top of me this time. I bumble around a bunch. This level is like a maze and everything looks the same, so I have no idea where I’m going. The pink hole looks like you could walk in, but I can’t and have to find another place to go.

I backtrack and got a little lost. Then I find stairs and head down. I hear enemies shooting. I’m on the right track. A few shots take care of them.

Wandering around some more, I pick up a few new weapons and find a blue hole. This one lets me in and brings me to a hangar-like place.

A drone greets me there, and I let out a few shots from my orange gun. It doesn’t do anything... I switch to the purple gun and unload all the ammo in a second. It also leaves a blue beam floating there.

image.png

The hangar is empty, so I head back. The compass doesn’t show any enemies, so I wander around, lost for a while. Eventually I find another blue hole I can go through, hurrah enemies. The yellow gun shoots really slow shots.

I hear a drone shooting somewhere, so I look around for it. I hear more shooting, but I don’t know from where. This pink hole doesn’t go anywhere either. The drone was around the corner. A few blasts and it’s quiet. Back to being lost.

I head back up the stairs and pick off a few stranglers. I find a blue hole and enemies, then I go pew pew pew all over them. I’m getting turned left and right.

Another blue hole that brings me to a hangar. Wasn’t I here already? I can’t go back, so looks like I’m stuck here. Down the stairs, I see a drone. I jump and take the quick way down. There’s a shield bubble pickup and the drone spews laser beams all over me.

I try shooting the drone and quickly realized I’m out of ammo on most of my guns. The orange gun doesn’t do anything. I try the yellow gun, but the drone teleports out of the way or something and my shots miss. The orange gun is all I’m left with, so I plan a tactical retreat but there aren’t any exits. I fire off the last of my shots in desperation, then the game kills me off with a NO MORE RESOURCES screen.

GAME OVER

Conclusion

Overall, the game is not bad for a demo. It worked without any problem. I didn’t find the gameplay particularly engaging, just shooting at drones and getting lost. The look reminds of old games with the stock assets look and the shine on objects. Sound wasn’t notable, generic pew pew laser shooting and boom explosion sounds.
