[ENG/ESP] OWLBOY - A Pretty but Tricky Game

After spending some time without playing any game I wanted to try something new but there was nothing that really incited me to play, that was until I decided to try out Owlboy. Previously to this I remember I watched a video like a month ago about a group of games and in said video they talked about it (tho honestly there’s not much that I remember from it) and more recently a friend told me to try to play it sometime, he also played it a little bit the last time he came to hang out at my house but I didn’t payed much attention to him while he was playing, he didn’t played much and that was pretty much it. So today I want to talk a little bit of my first impressions of this beautiful pixel-filled adventure.

The story of Owlboy is being carried in the shoulders of a young owl boy... you know, like the tittles says (wasn’t it obvious?), this owl boy is called Otus, and as an owl, he looks like one and also has the abilities of one, for example: flying. The story of Otus and what he does is not really clear at the start, we know he is a student and is currently under the wing of his tutor Asio who is training him and constantly says to him that he can mold him to be a worthy owl like himself. At first, what we see is a dream, and in this we see how Otus is looked down upon his tutor and the other members of his village, that is called “Vellie”. Asio doesn’t stop telling him what a disappointment of student he is and as for the others shadows of his dream, he gets bullied for being “useless”, how he will never get to do anything good, how he is a “waste” of an owl and how pathetic he is for being a “mute”.

And yes, Otus is indeed a mute, but hey that doesn’t mean anything, that just doesn’t “speak” for what he can or can’t do.

After looking at his nightmares, Asio comes to his house and wakes him up (showing us next a scene that absolutely doesn’t remind me of various games of the franchise Zelda and how most of them start their games, ahem), he then tells Otus that he needs to start a watch thru the village since there has been pirates around the area and that if he finds anything to report to him, we then can assume that the owls in the village have the roles of watching over it, there are also another types of people so not everyone is an owl. Asio also mentions how Otus shouldn’t space out to much and to concentrate, then again putting more pressure into him while not taking the time to understand him. And is here after Asio parts ways with Otus that we can finally explore the village and look out for the invaders.

From now everything is pretty, it's almost like you play this and suddenly start to breathe again, taking Otus to every corner of the village is really hypnotizing in my case I could not stop thinking how pretty the game looks, to the point that I couldn’t help but zone out myself haha.

But is here where we can also try to see what else can Otus other than flying, one of this curious dynamics is how he can lift things off the ground by lifting them while flying, taking big rocks, chests that are filled with coins and various types of fruits(?) that Otus can eat to heal himself (I personally love that when he eats somethings he makes a sound that is like “aung” and I find it adorable haha). Another thing he does is spinning, something that can help to move objects.

Flying around the village we meet more of its residents and talk a little bit with them, and again, I could NOT stop staring at them and their surroundings, dumbfounded once again because this game is waaaaay too pretty to not appreciate it enough. While talking with the villagers, we meet Geddy, Otus’s best friend, he ask us if we are watching out and also tells about some “troublemaker” that has been around too, others also tells us something similar so we keep an eye on that while looking for the pirates.

In the middle of Otus’s search, we find ourselves going to Vellie Outpost, and for a moment all that accompanies Otus is a perfect moment filled with fresh air, peace and silence… until a couple ot owls come to interrupt said silence scaring Otus and just outright bullying him. But thankfully Geddy comes into the scene and chase away the bullies (How dare they bully my son, dumbasses hh), here Geddy joins our group, and he helps when Otus carries with him so he can shoot at enemies with his blaster.

Going around with the company of Geddy and his shooting skills and after a ruckus at the village, we find a shadow, the troublemaker and chase after him thru a cave, here we start to find more obstacles in way so we need to find solutions to a couple of puzzles while fighting enemies along with Geddy, still chasing after the troublemaker. Fighting is this game is a little tricky, specially if you don’t know pretty well what the character can do to fight… like me lol I found it quite hard (and this is not me saying that the game is IMPOSSIBLY hard, almost everything can be hard for me, sorry not sorry) and died a lot thru it but still tried to keep going, one of the things I liked, and was glad that it was like it is in the game, was that once you died you appeared in the same place to carry on and try again, again thankful for this haha.

Another thing that was hard was shooting with Geddy, I think you need to keep the cursor at your target for it to work, and it was a little bit uncomfortable, and something similar happens with Otus and his spins, but again that’s just me.

Going back to the story, there’s a little collapse in the caves and Otus and Geddy get separated for a bit, so Otus goes on his way fighting and moving forward thru puzzles ‘til he meets with Geddy again to try get out of the falling cave. And is in our way out where we meet with the first boss, but here’s the thing… I couldn’t beat it haha I found a way to attack him tho because at first I couldn’t induce damage to it (Geddy’s attacks doesn’t work with solid metal) but turns out that Otus could do a spinning attack while flying and I just didn’t know lmao this way the boss losses their mask and here Geddy can attack well, but as I said before attacking with Geddy was tricky and after trying for a while I gave up, I’m sorry(?).

Even thought that I couldn’t go pass the first boss (how embarrassing of me lol) I can’t say that I wont try out again and continue this game, honestly I feel that maybe there where more places in the village that I could have visited at first to explore and find out better what Otus can do, but got carried away with the mission of finding the pirates and the troublemaker. Apart from that, there is a lot this story wants to tell and I sincerely want to find out what it is, Otus character spoke to me almost instantly, because I know what it feels like to be looked down and to be bullied for not “talking” (I’m not mute but I’m the kind of person that doesn’t feel comfortable talking too much) so I kinda can see bits of myself in this character and I really don’t want this story to go unnoticed by my eyes, and I hope to continue it.

I already heard that this game made almost no noise when it came out so if you are looking for something new to play and want to look at pretty pixels while doing so then this is your call, I really recommend it (the music is really pretty too, what else do you want?). Después de pasar un tiempo sin jugar a ningún juego quería probar algo nuevo pero no había nada que realmente me incitara a jugar, eso fue hasta que decidí probar Owlboy. Anteriormente a esto recuerdo que vi un video como hace un mes sobre un grupo de juegos y en dicho video hablaban de él (aunque honestamente no hay mucho que recuerde de él) y más recientemente un amigo me dijo que intentara jugarlo alguna vez, él también lo jugó un poco la última vez que vino a pasar el rato a mi casa pero no le presté mucha atención mientras jugaba, no jugó mucho y eso fue todo. Así que hoy quiero hablar un poco de mis primeras impresiones de esta bonita aventura llena de píxeles.

La historia de Owlboy es llevada en los hombros de un joven niño búho... ya sabes, como dice el título (¿no era obvio?), este niño búho se llama Otus, y como búho, parece uno y también tiene las habilidades de uno, por ejemplo: volar. La historia de Otus y lo que hace no está muy clara al principio, sabemos que es un estudiante y que actualmente está bajo el ala de su tutor Asio que lo está entrenando y este le dice constantemente que puede moldearlo para que sea un búho digno como él. Al principio, lo que vemos es un sueño, y en él vemos cómo Otus es despreciado por su tutor y por los demás miembros de su pueblo, que se llama "Vellie". Asio no para de decirle lo decepcionante que es como estudiante y en cuanto a las otras sombras de su sueño, recibe burlas por ser "inútil", por cómo nunca llegará a hacer nada bueno, por ser un "desperdicio" de búho y por lo patético que es por ser "mudo".

Y sí, efectivamente Otus es mudo, pero hey eso no significa nada, eso simplemente no "dice" nada en cuanto a lo que puede o no puede hacer.

Después de ver sus pesadillas, Asio llega a su casa y lo despierta (mostrándonos a continuación una escena que absolutamente no me recuerda a varios juegos de la franquicia de Zelda y cómo empiezan la mayoría de ellos sus juegos, ejem), luego le dice a Otus que tiene que empezar a vigilar la aldea ya que han habido piratas por la zona y que si encuentra algo que se lo comunique, entonces podemos asumir que los búhos de la aldea tienen la tarea de vigilarla, también hay otro tipo de personas así que no todos son búhos. Asio también menciona como Otus no debe distraerse mucho y concentrarse, entonces nuevamente le pone más presión mientras no se toma el tiempo de entenderlo. Y es aquí, después de que Asio se separe de Otus, cuando por fin podemos explorar la aldea y buscar a los invasores.

A partir de ahora todo es bonito, es casi como si jugaras a esto y de repente empezaras a respirar de nuevo, llevar a Otus a todos los rincones del pueblo es realmente hipnotizante en mi caso no podía dejar de pensar en lo bonito que se ve el juego, hasta el punto de que no podía evitar distraerme haha.

Pero es aquí donde también podemos probar a ver que más puede hacer Otus aparte de volar, una de estas curiosas dinámicas es como puede levantar cosas del suelo levantándolas mientras vuela, tomando grandes rocas, cofres que están llenos de monedas y varios tipos de frutas(?) que Otus puede comer para curarse (personalmente me encanta que cuando come algo hace un sonido que es como "aung" y me parece adorable haha). Otra cosa que puede hacer es girar, algo que puede ayudar a mover objetos.

Volando por el pueblo nos encontramos con más de sus habitantes y hablamos un poco con ellos, y de nuevo, no podía dejar de mirarlos a ellos y a su entorno, boquiabierta una vez más porque este juego es demasiaaaaado bonito como para no apreciarlo lo suficiente. Mientras hablamos con los aldeanos, nos encontramos con Geddy, el mejor amigo de Otus, nos pregunta si estamos vigilando y también nos habla de algún "alborotador" que ha estado por ahí también, otros también nos dicen algo parecido así que nos mantenemos atentos mientras buscamos a los piratas.

En medio de la búsqueda de Otus, nos encontramos yendo al Puesto de Mando de Vellie, y por un momento todo lo que acompaña a Otus es un momento perfecto lleno de aire fresco, paz y silencio... hasta que un par de búhos vienen a interrumpir dicho silencio asustando a Otus y simplemente intimidándolo. Pero afortunadamente Geddy entra en escena y ahuyenta a los bullies (Cómo se atreven a intimidar a mi hijo, estos bobos hh), aquí Geddy se une a nuestro grupo, y su manera de ayudar entra cuando Otus lo carga para poder que este empiece disparar a los enemigos con su blaster.

Yendo por ahí en compañía de Geddy y su habilidad para disparar y después de un alboroto en el pueblo, encontramos una sombra, el alborotador y lo perseguimos a través de una cueva, aquí empezamos a encontrar más obstáculos en el camino por lo que tenemos que encontrar soluciones a un par de puzzles mientras luchamos contra los enemigos junto con Geddy, todavía persiguiendo al alborotador. Los combates en este juego son un poco complicados, sobre todo si no sabes muy bien lo que el personaje puede hacer para luchar... como yo lol Lo encontré bastante difícil (y con esto no es que diga que el juego es IMPOSIBLEMENTE difícil, casi todo puede ser difícil para mí, lo siento pero no lo siento) y morí mucho a través de él, pero aún así traté de seguir adelante, una de las cosas que me gustó, y me alegré de que fuera como es en el juego, fue que una vez que morías aparecías en el mismo lugar para continuar y volver a intentarlo, de nuevo estoy agradecida por esto haha.

Otra cosa que fue difícil fue disparar con Geddy, creo que necesitas mantener el cursor en tu objetivo para que funcione, y fue un poco incómodo, y algo similar sucede con Otus y sus giros, pero de nuevo, esta soy sólo yo.

Volviendo a la historia, hay un pequeño derrumbe en las cuevas y Otus y Geddy se separan por un tiempo, así que Otus sigue su camino luchando y avanzando a través de puzzles hasta que se encuentra de nuevo con Geddy para intentar salir de la cueva que se esta derrumbando. Y es en nuestra salida donde nos encontramos con el primer jefe, pero aquí está la cosa... No pude vencerlo haha Encontré una forma de atacarlo porque al principio no podía inducirle daño (los ataques de Geddy no funcionan con el metal sólido) pero resulta que Otus podía hacer un ataque giratorio mientras volaba y yo no lo sabía lmao de esta forma el jefe pierde su máscara y aquí Geddy puede atacar bien, pero como dije antes atacar con Geddy era complicado y después de intentarlo un rato me rendí, lo siento(?).

Por favor miren la cara de Otus, pfft.

A pesar de que no pude pasar el primer jefe (que vergonzoso de mi parte lol) no puedo decir que no volveré a probar y continuar este juego, honestamente siento que tal vez había más lugares en el pueblo que podría haber visitado al principio para explorar y descubrir mejor lo que Otus puede hacer, pero me dejé llevar por la misión de encontrar a los piratas y el alborotador. Aparte de eso, hay mucho que esta historia quiere contar y sinceramente quiero descubrir qué es, el personaje de Otus conecto conmigo casi que al instante, porque sé lo que se siente ser menospreciada y ser acosada por no "hablar" (no soy muda pero soy el tipo de persona que no se siente cómoda hablando demasiado) así que puedo ver partes de mí misma en este personaje y realmente no quiero que esta historia pase desapercibida ante mis ojos, y espero continuarla.

Ya he oído que este juego no hizo casi ningún ruido cuando salió, así que si están buscando algo nuevo a lo que jugar y quieren mirar bonitos píxeles mientras juegan, entonces esta es su llamada, realmente lo recomiendo (la música también es muy bonita, ¿Qué más quieren?).
