Hello everyone! How’s it going?, today what I want to talk about is the game that I personally feel birthed me lol and that game is Guitar Hero: On Tour for the Nintendo Ds [Lite]. Ok, first of all, I want to say that this not a review neither is an opinion of the game, I kinda want to treat this space like “love letter” to the game(???) not exactly a letter per-see but kind of an opportunity to express how much this game means to me and how it helped me thru the years shape who I am today.

And if I want to talk about the game then for inertia I have to talk about the Nintendo Ds, because see, back in like 2006 my dad gave me for Christmas what I consider one of the best gift I have had in my entire life, and that of course was the Nintendo Ds and with it came the game I’m talking about, Guitar Hero On Tour, at first it was all so exciting because in my short years of life back then I never had much previous contact with video games (at most I played a couple of things here and there in my dad’s PC) but it was a topic that really caught my attention.

At first I didn’t understand much, didn’t fully understand how the game worked aside that I need I had to use the accessory and touch the buttons and that I had to touch the screen like if it was a real guitar but I didn’t know that it had to be done while paying attention to the order of the buttons that were displayed in the screen + following the rhythm and touching the screen in the moment the notes were in the right place, but instead of that, in my 6/7 yo mind it was enough just touching the screen and buttons whenever it felt right and that doing that I already looked “cool” lmao, I guess some people would ask themselves “Why didn’t I followed the tutorial?” and that is a good question, but it’s not that I didn’t do the tutorial, I did tried it, I thought it was the “boring” part of the game but I did it a few times and still didn’t get it, the major factor of this being that the game was in English and back then my English didn’t reach a higher level than knowing what it means “Hello, How are you?”, the numbers, colors, etc, so I didn’t understand much of the game, what I did know was what it meant “Easy”, “Medium”, “Hard” and “Expert” but still that didn’t helped much my case (and spoiler alert, I also tried to play in expert a lot of times while “playing” like a possessed child lol).

Anyway, not clearing any song did not stop me from having fun, I loved the game and how it looked in terms of the designs and the graphics, but what I loved the most was the music, this was not just my proper “first game” I played but it also was my first contact to rock music and eventually what made me fall in love with rock, I don’t even think I can put in words how good it made me feel to listen to the songs (the first 5 that were available to play in the first stage that was a Subway) but it all clicked in a way that felt so right. I also enjoyed sharing this game with my friends back at school, a lot of us started having our own consoles back in the day and I remember how we all came to school with our Ds and (in the case of a specific classmate) a PSP, just so we could all play together in groups in our free time, some of my friends knew how to play a little and others just did it as wrong as I did, but again, it was fun and I’m quite fond of the memories I have of those days.

I also remember a special occasion in our school (it was kind of a party but I don’t remember what it was for) and there was a boy a little older than me that also had a Ds and the game so he came to me and my group of friends and we played the VS mode, he won obviously he knew how to play, but I was more into the experience than anything else, I was nervous but I also felt the adrenaline of the moment and I loved it haha.

After my first three years of being in primary school I stopped playing for diverse reasons (reasons that I don’t quite remember to be honest) but when I was like 9-10 years old I picked up my Ds again and put on the game again, this being when I actually started to understand how to play, it was a very eyeopening period because it was blowing my mind how simple it was all that time and hell I was really enjoying it, I played hours and hours and HOURS and I fucking loved it, discovering the new stages, new songs, new band groups, new guitars and character in game and much more, all of it, all of it was awesome and nothing can quite compare to it.

This was obviously also my first contact with a rhythm game (a genre that I’m obsessed with to this day haha) so it all kind of goes back to Guitar Hero for me. The rush that I felt after clearing a song was astonishingly cathartic to me, I always tried my best to get five stars and also tried to clear everything in all of the difficulties the game had to offer (though to this day I haven’t cleared a lot of them in difficult, maybe one day I’ll try again), my hand would start to hurt a lot but it was all worth it, oh yeah it was all worth it. Songs like I Don’t Wanna Stop, Anna Molly, Breed, All Stars (yeah, the song from Shrek), Heaven, Helicopter, La Grange, Youth Gone Wild, Pride and Joy, etc, are all gems that I got to know because of this game, and playing them in Guitar Hero makes you feel like you could fly, again, nothing can quite compare to the feeling of playing this game.

To this day my Ds Lite still works, but I can’t play Guitar Hero on it anymore, the hinge has been broken for quite some years (I still could play GH from time to time while being careful, but that’s not enough anymore), the accessory also gets disconnected after a couple of movements so playing is impossible, and if that wasn’t sad enough, the tactile screen is just a mess that doesn’t detect anything at all, the only way its touching really hard in specific areas, I guess that’s a consequence of me playing like a demon monkey for so many years, at the very least I still can start the game and see the menu and the song list with my scores and everything else, but it’s not something I do often.

This game is part of the central core of my [everything], it introduced me to one of my favorite franchises ever, to one of my favorite bands of all times (Bloc Party, if you haven’t heard anything of them before you MUST listen to their album Silent Alarm, do it, no questions, just do it please), to one of the genre of games I enjoy the most and also to one of the genres of music that I love the most, it has everything I could ask for (it will also make you look cool while you play, source = trust me dude), and in top of that it also has made me really interested in learning an instrument, something that I still haven’t done but that I would love to do soon (that being learning to play the guitar or what I’m interested the most these days; the drums), so yeah this game pretty much became what I think is one of the most special parts in my life.

There are a lot of Guitar Hero’s games that I haven’t played to this day but I’m glad I have a lot to discover and experience for myself when it comes to this franchise, I’m just glad that there’s more to this game than what I already played and I cannot wait to see and feel it. I’m also pretty sure that the world isn’t done with Guitar Hero and it will come back to us in the future, all we have to do is wait and see.

¡Hola a todos! ¿Qué tal esta todo?, hoy quiero hablar del juego que personalmente siento que es el que me pario lol y ese juego es Guitar Hero: On Tour para la Nintendo Ds [Lite]. Ok, primero que nada, quiero decir que esto no es una reseña ni una opinión del juego, sino que quiero tratar este espacio como una "carta de amor" al juego, no exactamente una carta, sino una oportunidad para expresar lo mucho que este juego significa para mí y cómo me ayudó a través de los años a formar la persona que soy a día de hoy.

Y si quiero hablar del juego entonces por inercia tengo que hablar de la Nintendo Ds, porque verán, allá por el año 2006 mi papá me regaló por Navidad lo que considero uno de los mejores regalos que he tenido en toda mi vida, y que por supuesto fue la Nintendo Ds y con ella vino el juego del que estoy hablando, Guitar Hero On Tour, al principio fue todo tan emocionante porque en mis cortos años de vida en ese entonces nunca tuve mucho contacto previo con los videojuegos (a lo mucho jugué un par de cosas aquí y allá en la PC de mi papá) pero fue un tema que me llamó mucho la atención.

Al principio no entendía mucho, no entendía del todo como funcionaba el juego aparte de que necesitaba que tenía que usar el accesorio y tocar los botones y que tenía que tocar la pantalla como si fuera una guitarra de verdad pero no sabía que había que hacerlo prestando atención al orden de los botones que aparecían en la pantalla + siguiendo el ritmo y tocando la pantalla en el momento en que las notas estuvieran en el lugar correcto, pero en vez de eso, en mi mente de 6/7 años bastaba con tocar la pantalla y los botones cuando me parecía bien y que haciendo eso ya me veía "Cool" lmao, supongo que algunos se preguntarán "¿Por qué no seguí el tutorial? " y es una buena pregunta, pero no es que no hiciera el tutorial, sí que lo intenté, pensé que era la parte "aburrida" del juego pero lo hice unas cuantas veces y seguía sin conseguirlo, el factor mayor de esto es que el juego estaba en inglés y por aquel entonces mi inglés no llegaba a un nivel superior a saber lo que significa "Hello, How are you?", los números, los colores, etc, así que no entendía mucho del juego, lo que sí sabía era lo que significaba "Easy", "Medium", "Hard" y "Expert" pero aun así eso no ayudaba mucho mi caso (y alerta de spoiler, también intenté jugar en experto muchas veces mientras "jugaba" como un niña poseída lol).

De todos modos, el hecho de no completar ninguna canción no impidió que me divirtiera, me encantaba el juego y cómo se veía en cuanto a los diseños y los gráficos, pero lo que más me gustaba era la música, este no fue sólo propiamente mi "primer juego" que jugué sino que también fue mi primer contacto con la música rock y eventualmente lo que me hizo enamorarme del rock, ni siquiera creo que pueda poner en palabras lo bien que me hacía sentir escuchar las canciones (las primeras 5 que estaban disponibles para jugar en la primera etapa que era el "Subway") pero todo encajaba de una manera que se sentía tan bien. También disfruté mucho compartiendo este juego con mis amigos del colegio, muchos de nosotros empezamos a tener nuestras propias consolas en esa época y recuerdo como todos veníamos al colegio con nuestras Ds y (en el caso de un compañero en concreto) una PSP, solo para poder jugar todos juntos en grupo en nuestro tiempo libre, algunos de mis amigos sabían jugar un poco y otros lo hacían tan mal como yo, pero de nuevo, era divertido y le tengo bastante cariño a los recuerdos que tengo de esos días.

También recuerdo una ocasión especial en nuestro colegio (era una especie de fiesta pero no recuerdo para qué era) y había un chico un poco mayor que yo que también tenía una Ds y el juego así que se acercó a mí y a mi grupo de amigos y jugamos al modo VS, él ganó, obviamente sabía jugar, pero yo estaba más metida en la experiencia que otra cosa, estaba nerviosa pero también sentía la adrenalina del momento y me encantaba haha.

Después de mis tres primeros años de estar en la escuela primaria dejé de jugar por diversas razones (razones que no recuerdo muy bien para ser honesta) pero cuando tenía como 9-10 años tomé mi Ds con mis manos y puse el juego de nuevo, siendo este el momento en que realmente empecé a entender cómo jugar, fue un periodo muy revelador, porque me sorprendió lo sencillo que era durante todo ese tiempo y demonios, lo estaba disfrutando mucho, jugaba horas y horas y HORAS y me encantaba, descubriendo los nuevos escenarios, las nuevas canciones, los nuevos grupos de música, las nuevas guitarras y los personajes del juego y mucho más, todo, todo era impresionante y nada puede compararse a ello.

Obviamente, también fue mi primer contacto con un juego de ritmo (un género con el que estoy obsesionada hasta el día de hoy, haha), así que todo se remonta a Guitar Hero para mí. El subidón que sentía después de superar una canción era asombrosamente catártico para mí, siempre me esforzaba por conseguir cinco estrellas y también intentaba superar todo en todas las dificultades que ofrecía el juego (aunque a día de hoy no he superado muchas de ellas en difícil, quizá algún día lo vuelva a intentar), me empezaba a doler mucho la mano pero todo merecía la pena, oh sí, todo merecía la pena. Canciones como I Don't Wanna Stop, Anna Molly, Breed, All Stars (sí, la canción de Shrek), Heaven, Helicopter, La Grange, Youth Gone Wild, Pride and Joy, etc, son todas joyas que conocí gracias a este juego, y tocarlas en Guitar Hero te hace sentir que podrías volar, de nuevo, nada puede compararse con la sensación de jugar a este juego.

A día de hoy mi Ds Lite sigue funcionando, pero ya no puedo jugar a Guitar Hero en ella, la bisagra está rota desde hace bastantes años (aún podía jugar a GH de vez en cuando con cuidado, pero ya no es suficiente), el accesorio también se desconecta tras un par de movimientos por lo que jugar es imposible, y si eso ya no era lo suficientemente triste, la pantalla táctil es un desastre que no detecta nada en absoluto, la única manera es tocando muy fuerte en zonas concretas, supongo que es consecuencia de que he jugado como un mono del demonio durante tantos años, al menos aún puedo iniciar el juego y ver el menú y la lista de canciones con mis puntuaciones y todo lo demás, pero no es algo que haga a menudo.

Este juego es parte del núcleo central de mi [todo], me introdujo a una de mis franquicias favoritas de todos los tiempos, a una de mis bandas favoritas de todos los tiempos (Bloc Party, si no has escuchado nada de ellos antes DEBES escuchar su álbum Silent Alarm, hazlo, sin preguntas, sólo hazlo por favor), a uno de los géneros de juegos que más disfruto y también a uno de los géneros de música que más amo, tiene todo lo que podría pedir (también te hará lucir genial mientras juegas, fuente = confía en mí dude), y además de eso también ha hecho que me interese mucho en aprender un instrumento, algo que todavía no he hecho pero que me encantaría hacer pronto (eso seria aprender a tocar la guitarra o lo que más me interesa en estos días; la batería), así que sí, este juego se convirtió en lo que creo que es una de las partes más especiales de mi vida.

Hay muchos juegos de Guitar Hero que no he jugado hasta ahora, pero me alegro de tener mucho que descubrir y experimentar por mí misma en lo que respecta a esta franquicia, me alegro de que haya más de este juego que lo que ya he jugado y no puedo esperar a verlo y sentirlo. También estoy bastante segura de que el mundo no ha terminado con Guitar Hero y que volverá a nosotros en el futuro, todo lo que tenemos que hacer es esperar y ver.
