I'm having fun the end game will be quite the grind though. Many appear to be making lots of alts to funnel resources to upgrade their mains gear.

Nope. Everyone just seems to be going with find something you enjoy playing and go with that. Since alts are played a lot and people switch mains all the time. You just got to find a playstyle you enjoy.
I'm playing the warrior berserker and have fun whirlwinding everything to death when the skill is up.
