My love letter to Apex Legends: Season 6

in Hive Gaming4 years ago (edited)

Before we dive in, I want to specify this is my vision of the season as a 'normal' player (who barely reached Platinum IV in ranked, by the way) and to highlight what Season 6 does right by itself and compared to the previous one. Which was, let's be honest, effin terrible. From now on I'm going to abbreviate Season with an S just to be fancy.

First and foremost, not a real point but quite solid, at least this season is playable. S5 was in fact unplayable for the first three weeks (and maybe even more) between numerous server issues, crashes, and last but not least the infamous no-hit regs (basically the game won't record the damage done); all those problems caused the hype for the new season to be broken and the will to continue playing disappear. I eventually returned to the game but not with the excitement I could've had; also the battlepass wasn't really great, with yes some great skins but overall meh stuff. Especially the transforming Wingman skin, weapon I cannot use at all.

  • Battlepass. The content within the BP is actually a very important thing, as in fact makes people want to play more in order to get those sweet new skins and skydive emotes. This is where Season 6 starts to shine.
Not only in fact this time BattlePass has a lot of neat skins and emotes but it also introduces a brand-new feature: holo-emotes; which are basically disks which project an image and a peculiar phrase of the character, and your team mates can also like them!
Making Apex Legends a less violent version of Twitter, basically.

Even the banners are cool!

  • Map. I do, and most people I talk with too, prefer World's Edge to King's Canyon and the changes they made, only increased my preference for this map. Many of those changes are in fact interactive, and change the look of the map even while you play/fight on the zones that received the much-needed love this map was lacking; raising bridges, static ones and tunnels open to new possibilities to engage, escape or simply to make life easier.

Activating those pannels you can change the look of entire and even uncover secrets

  • New Legend. I've been a Caustic main for the last 5 Seasons; surely one of the reasons is because I really like this character, his personality and his abilities but also because none of the newly introduced characters ever really picked my interest.
I'm also aware that my aim is not the best, my friends are the beamers not certainly me, so I usually play something that can contribute to the team in other ways and Rampart allow me to do so by introducing in the field movable covers players can use in open fields, or to armor a window or 'rebuild' a missing door. Also her passive enchances LMGs and since I shamelessly love the L-Star, I'm all about that ahah

In this case the door is not missing but the cover is already available if someone wish to peek

  • Armor changes. I'm not totally happy with them as they made everyone squishier and with the introduction back in Season 5 of the Mastiff and in the current one of the Devotion (notoriusly high damage weapons) as 'floor loot' (meaning they can be found on the ground and not only in care packages) made the thing even worse but I do think the concept is the right one; in fact now everyone is equipped with EVO shields (it evolves everytime a damage treshold is met) and not finding better armors doesn't automatically doom you or your team.

  • Crafting! I love this mechanic. You collect materials from bins and extractors and craft at stations scattered on the map items decided by daily and weekly rotations. While the downside may be it makes some weapons readily available to sweaty people (like the wingman with the skullpiercer) it also makes Lifeline less necessary as at least you can buy that med kit you've been looking for the entire map. And god knows how many times it happen ahaha

To conclude. While this season is not perfect and does have flaws, I don't think it is really that terrible and I'm having a lot of fun with Rampart, with the map changes and I'm lusting after some of the goodies encased in the Battle Pass. I do hope this article makes someone reconsider, at least a tiny bit, their opinion about Season 6. If not, I tried!
