Upgrading my system's graphics card from RX 580 4gb to a RX 5700 XT.

in Hive Gaming2 years ago

In this post we will talk about my new shiny RX 5700 XT which replaces my old but good RX 580 4GB in my primary system, We will talk about why I upgraded, 2nd hand/refurbished/brandnew, AISURIX, what and what not to do, The PROS and CONS, Benchmarks, and of course, my not so important overall thoughts about the whole ordeal and what happens next.

THE WHY?

It's pretty obvious that the number one factor in why one upgrades or even just buy a videocard in their system is videogames, But why do people buy new hardware if the current ones can run the games you want to play?

The answer is simple.

Immersion.

Being able to just play videogames is different to being able to play videogames the way it is intended to be and is on another level again when playing videogames above more than what it was intended to be.

but my real answer to this question is this, "My RX 580 4GB is simply not capable enough to maintain my standards/enjoyment for gaming and so I need a better device."

Playing BOTW in 60fps and at 4k resolution is an absolute treat.
The Image above is compressed by Peakd, here's a link to a BIGGER but BETTER photo thanks to Hiveblog!

What were the factors that made me feel I needed to buy a new one?

  • Current videogames, specially newer ones have increased the video memory requirements quite a lot. My RX 580 4GB which has only 4GB of video memory is simply inadequate for current games. What happens you might ask if you have less video memory than required? It stutters, It stutters as it loads and unloads assets from the game.

  • Sixty(60) Frames Per Second, as a gamer this is the absolute minimum unless we have no choice. The RX 580 4GB struggles to maintain it in my current monitor, the bigger the resolution the higher the required graphical computation. there's a certain kind of shitty feeling when you play a game at 30 FPS when it was intended to be played at 60 FPS. I'd also want 120 FPS when playing competitive online games.

  • Beyond the two reasons above, there's probably no other major reasons, some of the minor reasons include the lack of instruction sets a newer videogame may require to run.

2nd Hand, Refurbished, and Brand New.

Shouldn't it be Brand New, Refurbished, and 2nd Hand? Well sure, except I filter them in terms of price performance.

The difference is obvious between the three tiers of quality:

  • 2nd Hand goods are the cheapest options. I bought my old RX 580 4GB two years ago for the price of $100, still runs. Out of the four second hand videocards I bought, one of them failed after 6 months, The other 3 still runs fine. Buying a second hand is more of a temporary solution at best and if they last long that would be amazing.

  • Refurbished goods are goods that were sent back to the manufacturer due to defects, repaired, and resold and a lower price point. Refurbished goods are returned to the manufacturer from reasons ranging from having a chipped plastic, to missing parts, and then there are some that are downright replaced, But they get repaired and I think they are as good as new. I am using a refurbished ultra wide screen right now, I loved it.

  • Brand New. They're brand new. full price, doesn't make them immune to breaking, it just means they're untouched.

AISURIX

https://www.aisurix.com/

A brand I have never heard of in my whole life until I bought a 5700 XT from them one week ago, And of course I did a bit of research before going YOLO into buying their videocard.

image.png
In their website, there are only two videocards available left.
heh, PUBG eating chicken game.

Anyway their website has a lot of grammatical errors which make me think it was simply typed into google translate and pasted there.

So did I buy one? Yes, I did.

image.png

I bought a 5700 XT 8GB at a price of $196.18. as of this writing.

The seller is the manufacturer so it's legit that it's their item, They marketed this as brand new and it probably is. I read some articles on reddit about Aisurix and they said the gpu die and memory were refurbished but the PCB is brand new. maybe? maybe not.

Does it matter that the gpu die is refurbished though?, no. you see brands like Asus, Gigagbyte, Galax, EVGA and others are board partners, they do not manufacture the gpu die. The gpu die is manufactured by AMD, INTEL, and or NVIDIA respectively. so it doesn't matter if the gpu die refurbished or not as long as it's working, And then the board partners would put that gpu die on their own PCB boards and coolers.

A few days later and the package arrives.

AISURIX GRAPHICS CARD. hmmm.

Atleast there's a sticker indicating that this is indeed a 5700XT 8GB.

Anyway moving on. yes It's legit.

Yay.

Size comparison between the RX 5700 XT and the RX 580.

What and what not to do.

This is going to be straight forward. The RX 5700XT is a 8 + 6 pin card.
IMG_20230528_143107_639.jpg
DO NOT DAISY CHAIN a pci-e cable. a single cable can only supply up to 150 watts.
IMG_20230528_143136_027.jpg
It is highly recommended to use two seperate cables connected to the power supply, for safety, make your power supply can support 2 PCIE cables and not make a makeshift one from molex.
IMG_20230528_162722_278.jpg
meh. sag. sag all the way.
IMG_20230528_170302_847.jpg
it works, but the temperature reach up to 90C because most of the case fans are out of order.
IMG_20230530_144654_538.jpg
New fans. Ideally I want both Static Pressure Fans and Air flow Fans, but these will do.

The PROS and CONS.

The PROS:

  • it's a 5700 XT.
  • it has 8 GB of ram.
  • because I no longer use 100% of the GPU, it has reduced heat and power usage compared to the RX 580.
  • I am ready to play Diablo 4.

The CONS:

  • None.

The Neutral:

  • I hope it works for more than 8 months.

Benchmarks.

image.png
The Graphics score is only 8909. I search the internet and it says most 5700XT reach 9400+ points. but here's the thing. this 5700XT is running on stock compared to those on the internet.

Overall Thoughts.

I'm pretty happy with it. it works great. I need to upgrade my cpu. maybe go from ryzen 1700 to ryzen 5700x. we'll see.

gonna enjoy playing Godfall which runs great now and BOTW and BOTW 2.

on another level again when playing videogames above more than what it was intended to be.

From now on, I will play on TV, haha shame on handheld. haha

Sheeesh, super HD! Grabe!

Sixty(60) Frames Per Second, as a gamer this is the absolute minimum

I think there is an option is Switch?? Not sure tho.

CONS? It is expensive haha, well for me who knows nothing about graphics cardsuntitled.gif. 🤣

Now you can play BOTW in divine graphics UwU !PIZZA

From now on, I will play on TV, haha shame on handheld. haha

hahaha emulator kasi me kaya 4k ung screenshot. may limits ang switch docked or undocked.

I think there is an option is Switch?? Not sure tho.

30fps and 900p yan ang limit ng BOTW sa switch(docked).

CONS? It is expensive haha, well for me who knows nothing about graphics cards

switch has a gpu equivalent to GTX 1650.
yung m1 2020 13.3 mo has a gpu equivalent to GTX 1050ti, 17% slower than the GTX 1650.
RTX 580 is 32% faster than the GTX 1650.
5700XT is 116% faster than the GTX 1650.

so ganun. pero for reference a 5700xt from a reputable brand could cost up to 300 USD compared sa 200 USD na nabili ko.

Thank you jiji 😊

Awesome upgrade! It's wild how the need of lots of VRAM has spiked the last few years.

It's really wild! like the current high high end sports 24gb of vram! making 16gb in turn look like the standard and 8gb the entry level.

Congratulations on your upgrade! You'll finally be able to try out so much new stuff with a great image quality and performance; must look like if you were playing a movie in some games with how detailed they look.

And I guess that if you would want to try some more older stuff, the GPU might be able to handle PS3 and X360 emulators, so not even old exclusives might be out of range for you now.

Thank you, the trying part is doable in the RX 580, but the enjoying part, not so much. 😊

Sadly the emulators are more on the CPU side rather than the GPU, so ps3 and x360 emulators are a big no. but when I do upgrade to a better CPU then maybe.

Thank you! 😊

congrats Man!!

Thank you!!

Great update bro, congrats and hopefully it performs well for you for a long time. I enjoyed reading the explanation throughout the post, a while back I read about what you mention about the daisy chained PCI connector and that it shouldn't be done, but I didn't hear anything about it again some time later.

I love the little toy sitting on the graphics card, but I've always had a question with that doesn't the heat melt it over time?

Thank you! I hope it lasts long too, My next target would be 16GB VRAM GPUs and that will take a while.

yeah daisy chaining a power connector is dangerous. like what if you vcard was to pull 200 watts on a 150-watt cable. it will either blow up the psu fuse or make the gpu faulty.

hehehe the toy doesn't melt (as long as the case if properly ventilated), but I don't recommended putting objects on top of the videocard, because videocards tend to sag due to the weight increase.

the temperature sensor is at the gpu die and not the air around it, but yes it's hot on full load. now it sits at 70C on full load once I installed the new case fans.

Thank you! 😊

Great upgrade!
I went from a 4GB RX 6400 to an 8GB GTX 1070 for cheap. It was totally worth it.

once we taste the high end feeling, we just want more right? hehehe.

it just looks really good and we don't want to go back. 😆

Thank you! 😊

AYEEEEE!

medyo masaya na ako sa phone ko, kahit downgraded at pangit na ng camera. WAHAHAHAHAHHAHA.

ty witty~ 😊

Nice Upgrade! Honestly, I'd be a bit sketched out buying a brand I never heard of before!

Also, how are you getting Zelda to run 4K? Are you using an emulator? I heard that 4K was near impossible to get on the switch due to the CPU not being powerful enough.

Yes I too am a bit sketched out as well. I was planning to buy a second hand and you know how second hand devices are and then I saw AISURIX and their prices were competitive with the 2nd hands with sketchy sellers so I just went YOLO and decided to try it.

the BOTW is on a CEMU emulator that's why it's 4k and 60fps. I also played BOTW2 in the ryujinx emulator also at 4k, but because my CPU is only ryzen 1700, it only runs at most average of 25-28 fps, still playable. emulators are more of the cpu side.

Thank you! 😊
