Computer gaming was really born with indy developers in the early 1980s. There wasn't much of an industry then. Today, indie developers don't have all that much competition on the PC as big budget releases are relatively few and far between. The situation is a little different on consoles.

Indie only recently and maybe in Europe in the 90s has had the strength to get into the industry although nowadays anyone can download Unreal, tell a story, some basic mechanics and release it on Steam, everything is in place so that it can be explored to the fullest.
