Hello, my dear Gamers! Long time no post. Real life has been keeping me away from Hive and from my games.
Today I want to address something that happens to most gamers...and try to find a solution for it. This is my BACKLOG CHALLENGE. This is my way of dealing with this...but feel free to jump in if you're having trouble too with finishing your games.
A gamer's worst enemy is time and being an adult (And back pain, lots of back pain😂). I find it hard to find time for playing games, even though they are both my hobby and my job. And being a game reviewer myself, I almost every time find myself adding more and more games to my backlog...up to this date, these are the games I'm currently playing:
- Horizon Zero Dawn (PC)
- God of War (PC)
- Digimon CyberSleuth (PC)
- Persona 4 Golden (PC)
- Martha is Dead (PC)
- CyberPunk 2077 (Xbox)
- Loop Hero (Switch)
- Kirby and the Forgotten Land (Switch)
- Pokemon Legend Arceus (Switch)
- Pokemon Shining Pearl (Switch)
- Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild (Switch)
- Games as Services: Lost Ark
- Games as Services: Sims 4.
Having that much games that I can't finish makes me anxious (literally anxious, I have an axiety dissorder). Well...let's Marie Kondo the heck out of these. Literally. We are going to use KonMari's Six rules for Tidying up to get our backlog in order.
Tener tantos juegos inconclusos me pone nerviosa -literalmente ansiosa, tengo desorden de ansiedad-. Bueno, vamos a Marie-Kondear este problema. Literalmente.
Rule 1: Commit to your backlog
If your backlog is huge like mine, we are going to make a pact with ourselves. No more game installing or buying (except there's a really good offer in something that we really like or a game that we've been expecting for a while).
Rule 2: Imagine your ideal free time
Gaming is all about having fun. So this does not have to feel like a burden. As we grow old, finding leisure time gets harder. We work, some of you have kids, there are other responsibilies and our bodies are not suited for 15 hour gaming marathons anymore (let's face it). Just think about your backlog and priorice the games you love the most.
Regla 2: Imagina tu tiempo libre ideal
Rule 3: Uninstall anything that doesn't spark joy
I told you we were going to KonMari this. You are not forced to play through games that you don't like. Same as books or movies. It's ok not liking games, even if they are 'a must play'. In my case...I'm not really vibing with Cyberpunk and I really can't handle Persona or Zelda right now. Those three, are gone. Here's my backlog now:
- Horizon Zero Dawn (PC)
- God of War (PC)
- Digimon CyberSleuth (PC)
- Martha is Dead (PC)
- Loop Hero (Switch)
- Kirby and the Forgotten Land (Switch)
- Pokemon Legend Arceus (Switch)
- Pokemon Shining Pearl (Switch)
- Games as Services: Lost Ark
- Games as Services: Sims 4.
Rule 4: Order by category
First, we remove Game as services: they are never finished so don't even try. Then, we are going to order our games thinking about the time that will take us to finish them. For this we can use HowLongToBeat, an useful page that gives you the average time that takes a gamer to beat a game. You can choose if you're going to play it casually or go hard platinum on them.
Now, we order our list from shorter to longer to beat, considering the amount of hours you've already played. Finish the easier games first. In my case:
- Martha is Dead (6 hours, 4 played)
- Kirby and the Forgotten Land (9 hours, 6 played)
- Loop Hero (28 hours, 2 played)
- God of War (32 hous, 20 played)
- Pokemon Shining Pearl (40 hours, 10 played)
- Horizon Zero Dawn (54 hours, 25 played)
- Pokémon Legends Arceus (75 hours, 4 played)
- Digimon Cyber Sleuth (119 hours, 30 played)
Rule 5: Follow the right order...the one that makes you happy
Games are for enjoying yourself, so even if we have a 'logical' order, rearange them by your preference. Maybe you're hyped with something, even though according to your list you should be playing another thing. Gaming should not be a burden. Be flexible. In my case:
- Martha is Dead (6 hours, 4 played)
- Kirby and the Forgotten Land (9 hours, 6 played)
- Pokémon Legends Arceus (75 hours, 4 played)
- Pokemon Shining Pearl (40 hours, 10 played)
- God of War (32 hous, 20 played)
- Horizon Zero Dawn (54 hours, 25 played)
- Digimon Cyber Sleuth (119 hours, 30 played)
8.Loop Hero (28 hours, 2 played)
Rule 6: Ask yourself if the game still sparks joy while you play it
By now, we already have our games all tidy and clean. We'll try to play them one by one, finishing one before moving on to the next one...BUT..
It may occur to you that you get bored of a game. It's ok. When you're getting bored, just ask yourself if the game is still "sparking joy". If it's starts to get boring, change it to the next one. If you don't feel like playing it anymore, uninstall it. Why? Because it's all about having fun.
For me, this is how I figured I could be easier for me to handle my backlog, since it helps with my anxiety issues.
How do you handle your backlog? Tell me in the comments.
The backlog can be a real pain. I've got a decent system going myself. I'm never gonna quit FFXIV so that's staying no matter what. I then play only 1 PC game until that's finished and 1 game for the Nintendo Switch until that's finished. I don't pickup any other games for either platform while playing them. If I don't enjoy a game I'm playing I scrap it rather quickly. Like I did with Code Vein. That game was garbage.
I just can't help myself to start lots of games at the same time. I wish I could do it tour way cause having more than 200hours of gaming pending is really overwhelming.
We are our own worst enemy, lol.
I can relate to the backlogs (and back pain too!). Maybe I should take these steps also, since I got a lot of games from bundles that I feel won't spark joy XD.
Very compelling and inspiring post. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for reading and taking the time to comment!
are you a video game enthusiast? What do you think is the most interesting block chain game to try right now?
Hey, thanks for commenting. To be honest, I haven't got anywhere deep block chain games. But I'm positive that in The Hive Gaming Comunity theres lots of people reccomending games like that.
