The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings is an action role-playing game developed by CD Projekt Red. The game is based on the fantasy novels by Andrzej Sapkowski. You play as Geralt of Rivia, a Witcher who has special powers enabling him to hunt monsters.

GAMEPLAY

If we talk about Gameplay, So, After a lengthy prologue, the game offers a captivating story with various plotlines and intricate political consequences. The combat system feels smooth, with blocking, dodging, and parrying complementing the magic and melee moves. As a witcher, you carry two swords - one for humans and the other for monsters. The general combat encounters are tactical affairs, where button bashing, evasive maneuvers, and other skills can help you gain an advantage. The boss fights are well-crafted, with memorable moments and intricate mechanics that make them enjoyable. As you level up, your skill tree branches open up, allowing you to customize your abilities.

The narrative is the most compelling aspect of the game. The conversations are deep and interesting, with believable writing and good delivery. There are multiple choices in dialogue that can affect the outcome of the story. Although the game world is not as open as in The Witcher 3, it is still full of detail and depth. You can interact with the locals, play mini-games like arm wrestling and dice, and take on contracts to kill beasts.

Geralt can meditate to prepare for battles, drink potions, and pass time. However, the inventory system is poorly designed, with disappointing menus and no sorting function. The game offers players the freedom to make their own choices, whether it is helping people, intimidating them, or engaging in romantic relationships. The game is not suitable for children due to mature themes, swearing, nudity, and mature dialogue. The Enhanced Edition includes all the DLC, an arena combat mode, side quests, and a new CG intro

Graphics & Sound

Graphically, the Witcher 2 looks remarkably good considering its age. The characters are detailed and the environments have clearly had a lot of love and attention to detail put into them. Saying that, there were a few pop-up issues but only now and then.

In terms of sound, the Witcher 2 is an absolute masterclass in sound design, whether it be the beautifully evocative music that perfectly accompanies the different locales or all the tactful and immersive ambient sound effects. Both of these features really add to the richness of the experience as you lose yourself in this vibrant game world. Add to that the fantastic array of quality voice actors, excellent writing, and conversations that have real quality. Finally, on sound, I have to mention the game's sense of humor. It's a genuinely funny game at times with witty one-liners, hilarious put-downs, and conversations that are always worth listening to

Good and Bad

bittman.png

What's good: The game has a fantastic story with rich and interesting characters. The combat is smooth and intuitive, and the audio is second to none. It's a master class in character-driven writing with unforgettable protagonists. The boss fights are memorable, and it creates a linear game world that's relatively small in size but one that feels immense in regard to its depth and law.

What's bad: The inventory screens are disappointing, and it could have done with a couple of open sections just to give you a little bit of time to process things, breathe, and evolve your character away from the core narrative.

Final Thoughts

The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings Enhanced Edition is a fantastic role-playing game with a rich story, interesting characters, a fascinating game world, and combat that's both satisfying and intuitive. Saying that, at times, it did have a bit of an arcade feel with quick time events and cheesy chases that would have been more at home in an Uncharted game. But it's very difficult not to enjoy the experience with the stoic Geralt of Rivia investigating compelling situations in a very strong story-driven adventure. Yes, maybe it lacks some more openness as we saw in The Witcher 3, but it doesn't affect the quality of the adventure. It's another great story, very good writing, great characters, rich game world game. So overall, It's a very Great game and role-playing game fans will absolutely love.

Definitely an underappreciated entry in the series! Although The Witcher didn't really hit its stride until the third game, the second had a lot of really great idea. It was just too bad that the development cycle was rushed and cd projekt red wasn't able to do everything they wanted before release.

Still a great game though and a perfect jumping off point for one of the best games of last generation.

Yes, I completely agree! The Witcher 2 had a lot of potential. It's a shame that the development cycle was rushed, but even with those limitations, the game still managed to deliver a fantastic experience.
