This is a review of games Assassin's Creed: The Ezio Collection. The games are available for PS4, Xbox One, and Microsoft Windows. Assassin's Creed: The Ezio Collection is a trilogy of stealth-based adventure games developed by Several Ubisoft Teams. The collection features Assassin's Creed II, Brotherhood, and Revelations. The games tell the story of Ezio and Desmond two characters set over different timelines, with Desmond being in the present day and Ezio in a historical era.
What is the game like to Play
Well, if you've never played an Assassin's Creed game the core gameplay involves being stealthy assassinating key figures and using free-running parkour skills to traverse buildings, rooftops, and structures in the game world. The idea behind the series is the animus a machine where people can relive genetic memories of their own or other ancestors in order to uncover hidden truths.
As with most things the animus is a powerful machine that dark forces are trying to use for malevolent purposes. So, that's where desmond and his buddies come in they're trying to avert a tragedy while being pursued by dark forces that will do anything in their power to stop them. You get three games and they all have a story that's interlinked and as a package, you're looking at around maybe 50 hours plus of play time to go through the entire trilogy.
So, first, we have Assassin's Creed II which starts the story of desmond and his ancestor Ezio the game is mostly set in Monteriggioni and is the backdrop for Ezio's quest where he has to seek revenge by assassinating key figures involved in a conspiracy. The city unlocks as you complete memory strands and as you progress you can invest in the city which will reap rewards later on. You can ride horses, gondolas, and also use Leonardo's experimental flying machine but for the most part, you'll be sneaking around, tailing subjects, killing bad people, and doing a variety of side quests.
Following this comes, Brotherhood a superior game in my opinion that's mostly set in the city of Rome. Again you can invest in a city use stealth and parkour to traverse the locations but you can also leave the animus this time whenever you like where desmond can explore present-day locations. The combat feels more deadly this time but the group's situations are still quite clunky and frustrating. The camera also has some issues during combat 2 but the game does add a cool multiplayer feature that adds replay value and I really liked how you could switch between Ezio and Desmond in this installment which really helps you feel connected to both characters.
Finally comes Assassin's Creed Revelations where the action involves desmond Ezio and Altair a returning protagonist from the series. Revelations are set in an open world and offer you the chance to capture and defend individual districts a feature retained from Brotherhood. Multiplayer features again and there are also some new features like the ability to use a zipline as well as the three games you also get two short films called Lineage and Embers that provide additional insight into the overall franchise narrative.
So, overall you're getting three good games 50 hours of gameplay roughly give or take, and two little mini-movies so it's a pretty good value package. Graphically, the series has always set the standard in terms of animation and these games have aged relatively well in that regard. The environments and the worlds you explore are richly detailed and well structured but some of the character models can be wooden at times but it's still it looks pretty good in my opinion.
The sound work is excellent throughout with good voice acting, decent writing, excellent music, and a strong level of sound effects and ambient sound. Desmond and Ezio are related and you can play as desmond reliving the memories of your ancestor to uncover a complex story involving the assassins and the templars and other mysterious forces. The trilogy also features other characters in some of the installments.
What's Good and What's Bad
What's Good: It's a fantastic story that's excellent value for money with three very good games included in the package. The parkour gameplay is smooth and enjoyable the link between Desmond and Ezio makes for an interesting narrative one that has been lost in the more modern releases in regard to the animus.
What's Bad: The combat system is a bit hit-and-miss throughout the series. Some parts of the games feel a little bit dated and you've got to be a fan of stealth to enjoy some of the installments.
What is the Verdict
Assassin's Creed: The Ezio Collection is a fantastic trilogy that made the franchise what it is today. The way Ezio and desmond are linked by their family heritage and how you switch between the two works very well. In recent installments, the modern-day parts of the assassin's games feel redundant and irrelevant but the Ezio collection, it holds everything together and not only improves the experience, but it makes the experience. Obviously, being three different games it's hard to review them as one entity like if I was gonna score them individually they would all score somewhere between 8 and 9 out of 10. But as a whole package, I'd say they're worth more than the sum of their parts as it's one massive story that's really enjoyable to unravel throughout three different installments.
