On April 8, 2024, a total solar eclipse was visible across much of North America. This event, often called the "Great North American Eclipse," followed the path of totality stretching from Mexico through the United States and into Canada. Observers within the path of totality experienced several minutes of darkness during the day as the Moon completely blocked the Sun.
It was a rare opportunity for millions of people to witness this phenomenon, as the next total solar eclipse visible in the contiguous United States won't occur until August 23, 2044.
