I tried doing some manual work at home, which is good as it keeps both the body and mind busy. But let me tell you something... cleaning a water tank is hard to do! I did it for the first time.
I started with the obvious problem, which is climbing onto the roof and accessing the tiny space between the roof and the plaster ceiling. For that, you need to move a few tiles, and soon I had access to one of the three water tanks I have at home. This one, in particular, is a reclaimed water tank, which means it's rainwater.
I have a system designed by me to collect, "treat," and reuse rainwater for flushing toilets.
- The collection part is easy: we have a roof, we have gutters, and we have a large underground reservoir.
- The treatment part is easy: I add chlorine through contact while the water passes, using a tablet. This means that as the water is collected, it passes by a chlorine tablet that gradually dissolves, dragging diluted chlorine to the underground reservoir.
- The reuse part is automated: a series of level sensors measure the amount of water in the underground reservoir and the elevated water tank. When there's water in the reservoir and a shortage in the tank, a pump is activated to fill it up.
As a result of the forest fires that occur in Brazil, a cloud of smoke is over our region. The black rain, as it’s called, brings down the smoke particles, and unfortunately, my roof collects it all. That way, my reservoirs are dirty.

I cleaned both reservoirs, the one underground and the elevated one.
It was hard work, so I split it into two parts. A bit in the morning, rest, then a bit in the afternoon.
I've been using this water reuse system for four years. In that time, we've saved a lot of potable water. By my estimates, we use almost 1 cubic meter per week just for toilet flushing. This makes a big difference for the planet.
And for my wallet!
Potable water is sold by cubic meter here. I hope you understand the international measurement system. A family of four consumes 16 cubic meters. Adding my estimate, we reach 20 cubic meters and start paying extra for excessive water use.

Moreover, we also wash floors and windows with this water.

Eu tentei fazer alguns trabalhos manuais em minha casa, isso é bom pois ocupa o corpo e a mente. Mas vou contar uma coisa... limpeza de caixa d'água é complicada de se fazer! Eu fiz isso pela primeira vez.
Comecei com o problema óbvio que é subir no telhado e acessar o espaço minúsculo entre o telhado e o gesso. Para isso é preciso afastar algumas telhas, e logo tive acesso a uma das três caixas d'água que tenho em casa. Essa em específico é um depósito de água de reúso, o que significa que é água da chuva.
Eu tenho um sistema projetado por mim para coletar, "tratar", e reutilizar a água da chuva para as descargas dos vasos sanitários.
- A parte da coleta é fácil: temos um telhado, temos calhas, e temos um enorme reservatório em terra.
- A parte do tratamento é fácil: adiciono cloro através do contato de passagem, usando uma pastilha. Isso significa que enquanto a água é coletada, ela passa por uma pastilha de cloro que vai desgastando, arrastando cloro diluído para o reservatório em terra.
- A reutilização é automatizada: uma série de sensores de nível medem a quantidade de água no reservatório em terra e na caixa d'água elevada. Quando temos água no reservatório e falta água na caixa d'água, uma bomba é acionada e completa o nível.
Resultado das queimadas das florestas que ocorrem no Brasil, uma nuvem de fumaça está sobre nossa região. A chuva negra, como é chamada, derruba as partículas de fumaça, e infelizmente meu telhado coleta tudo. Dessa forma meus reservatórios estão sujos.

Limpei os dois reservatórios, tanto aquele que fica no solo como o suspenso.
Deu muito trabalho, parcelei em duas vezes. Um pouco de manhã, descanso, um pouco de tarde.
São quatro anos usando esse sistema de reúso da água. E nesse tempo economizamos muita água potável. Nas minhas estimativas, gastamos quase 1m³ por semana, apenas em vaso sanitário. Isso faz um grande diferença para o planeta.
E para o meu bolso!
A água potável é vendida em m³ por aqui. Espero que você entenda de sistema internacional de medidas. A família de quatro pessoas consome 16 m³. Se adicionar a minha estimativa chegamos 20m³ e passamos a pagar adicional por usar água em excesso.
