After a wayyy too long period of neglect, being approached by several people at HiveFest made me speed up the process and fix https://hiveinvite.com, which now should be fully operational again.
What is HiveInvite
Onboarding to Hive comes with a multitude of challenges, and one of the biggest issues is account creation. There are plenty of services out there, but they all rely on someone's account creation tokens to be available, and key security isn't perfect.
HiveInvite offers a fully featured solution for everyone to use the core Hive functionality of creating an account yourself, and doesn't reveal the keys to new accounts to anyone else but the new user.
Claim account creation tokens
HiveInvite lets you claim your own account creation tokens in several ways. These tokens are not transferable, and can be used at any time to create a Hive account.
The current cost, defined by the witnesses, is 3 HIVE. This small amount of HIVE is necessary to prevent everyone from just creating all the account names they can think of and squatting the whole namespace.
If you have staked a large amount of Hive Power, you can claim these tokens for free by spending a big amount of RC. This is possible with about 5000 HP, but the current number is very dynamic. For the whales out there it's possible to claim a maximum of 100 tokens at once.
Create invites
The core functionality of HiveInvite is of course creating invites.
There are 3 main ways to do this:
- you can send out an email with customized text to the address of the person you want to invite
- you can create one or multiple invite links, which you can forward in any way you want
- you can create public invites that require the new users to introduce themselves to you, and optionally verify their socials. These invites are published on https://hiveinvite.com/public.html
Each of the options leads the new user to the second part of the app
Accept invites
Anyone with an invite link can use it to request the creation of an account. They will be provided with a passphrase, used as master password to create their Hive keys. Each step explains the importance of the keys and how to handle them safely. After choosing their username, they will be forwarded to the hive.blog FAQ, to give them something to read while they have to wait for the creator of the invite to actually
Create the account
In this last step, the creator of the invite has to create the account on the blockchain, using their active key. Optionally some HP can be delegated right away. The account will be usable right after that.
Internationalization
HiveInvite is meant to be used all over the world! It's been a long time since the initial translations were done, and a lot of the stuff is outdated. Check out the GitHub if you can help fixing one or two of the locales. English and german are up to date and can be used as templates.
Closing note
I hope this tool is useful for you, please leave me a comment when you use it successfully!
Please vote for my witness to show that my work for Hive is appreciated, and if you have some free time yourself get over to https://propol.is and help us create the ultimate resource about Hive and everything else in our own decentralized wiki!
Need to look deeper into the new additions soon, was just today talking to a dev about the issues hiveonboard's neglect has caused ocd's onboarding program, maybe we could move over to hiveinvite instead. Thanks for your contributions!
Does ocd's onboarding program delegates a little hive to start ? I have plans to go to public after HIVE-INR is listed in Mudrex, so will need some onboarding tool.
hive delegations aren't required now with RC, but our onboarding is done through discord with various tools. We're in the process of making things work 100% again and u can follow the onboarding activities on the @ocdb compilation posts with rewards going to onboarders to incentivize more onboarding. According to stats by @demotruk our retention there has been 2x+ higher than regular users so we hope to see it scale.
The onboarders usually provide HP/RC delegations to the onboarded users, but the free tickets we provide to hiveonboard from ocdb don't give rc delegations yet, we'll work on that as well. In general hiveonboard has been unreliable so it's been taken off hive.io signup page.
But they are needed for the newbie to start posting, right ? I will go through ocdb compilation posts, to see how it works.
You can delegate RC itself so they can use the network, doesn't have to be HP anymore.
This is new to me, where do I find more details ?
That would be great. HOB seems to have been abandoned and has serious security issues, as it is an easy target for botnets, spammers, and scammers.
Hive Invite seems like a very good alternative.
Unfortunately, our main problem is still present. I checked it yesterday and described it here.
Just invited @driipam and she accepted :)
Yay! Welcome to hive @driipam!
Thank you for the warm welcome :)! Looking forward to contributing to Hive :)!
Grat work, i hope the friends i invite come do they work!

Ohhhh
This one is quite nice...
Lovely initiative...
Any tool that makes onboarding user easier is good. I think we struggle with onboarding on retention. I think if we continue to work in this area it will benefit us all.
Interesting for Onboarding process, for sure this will be a great help
It is a shame that some of my accointances seems to be anti crypto. one classmate who was familiar with crypto joined, stayed for +- a month and left without ever making a post. It seems he hoped to get rich just by curating...
Your classmate is NGMI.
You don't get rich by snapping your fingers; You've got to bring value and you will get value in return.
You are right. I suggested a few times that he should try posting. but he did not listen. Shame. Recently I once again remembered that classmate. In the past he used to create music. So when I saw this post I thought that if had he stayed he could have earned those awesome rewards. If I would be a musician I would definitely try to win them. 100+ HBD is a lot of money. Recently I bought some HBD but I for me few hundreds eur is a lot of money so I only could get a little. So winning a contest like that would really help.
Yeah, Vibes is an awesome contest. I think I might participate this week.
I earlier created accounts using leofinance, because they delegate a little hive power, to the new account, how much minimum delegation is needed for someone to start ?
They can write a first post without delegation, not much more. For a headstart, 10 HP are more than sufficient. It can then be adapted with any wallet at any time necessary.
I came to know recently that HP delegation is not needed and we can delegate RC, any idea on that ?
Yes, you can do that on peakd, in keychain, or any other wallet. Will be added as an option to hiveinvite soon.
So I create an account and then delegate RC separately ?
Do you plan to add rc delegations?
Now that you ask I do, yes
Wonderful, thank you.
What does the notification of a claim look like to the person paying a token for the new account?
I put out a link, but have no idea how to check to see if there has been a claim.
You should receive an email with the subject "One of your Hive invitations was accepted" by noreply@hiveinvite.com
Great to hear it.
This used to be my main source of onboarding before it faded away.

About bloody time, you got back and fixed it. I lost some hive from this project of yours a while back and you were no where in sight. I hope this time round you don't set and forget about it again.
I don't understand, how can you lose hive there? Except for the email and account creation process it doesn't offer anything you couldn't do elsewhere too.
I've also always been reachable on discord.
I got the token, then when it was account creation time, the token didn't work, the page just hanged and times out. I sent a comment on one of your posts at that time. You did not reply. I surmised you were doing other things. So i just took it as a lose. The token i am not sure if it works or not but i took it as a lose since there was no customer support. But yes, hope you don't go disappearing again.
Yes, the token is still in your account and usable on Peakd for example.
I'm sorry you had a bad experience. I was thinking to argue that that's one of the downsides that comes with decentralization, but then I had to think about all the actively used products that have been deactivated by normal companies.
Thing here is, I'm not a company. My funding to dedicate time to non-profit projects like this come through witness votes, and my position is very volatile. Of course I would like to provide continuous support for both the software and users, but when I have to worry about how to cover my regular expenses priorities tend to switch.
And besides that, I could get hit by a bus tomorrow. Which is why I open source all of my work. That's the best I can think of to ensure future availability. This case wasn't easy to take over as several libraries had changed or deprecated, but if I disappear in the near future it should be an easy job for anyone with a little technical knowledge to get an instance running.
OK I take your explanation and thank you for your effort. Please don't get hit by a bus.
Thank you @pharesim !
Just for your information, there are some parts that are not translated. For example:
I assume it's not a priority, but anyway.
Thanks!
That's been mentioned in the post
Ok, sorry!
I just checked the link.
Have a great day.
I think we should have this pinned somewhere, or even re-shared once in a while. It's way too useful especially for newbies who might want to bring their friends on the platform too.
This is great.
One thing I'm still not clear about - can I create accounts using account creation tokens or have I got to burn some HIVE?
Also, it would be really helpful to have a minimum amount for RC delegations to allow an account to get started. I mean how much RC do I need to delegate?
You can get account creation tokens by burning HIVE or spending RC. You always need one token to create an account.
RC numbers aren't really in a format that's friendly for human use. How much a user needs depends on what they plan to do. I think it's easier to think how much HP they need and delegate the respective amount of your RC. So if you have 1000 HP and would delegate 10 HP usually, use 1% of your available RC. I'm not sure how to solve this nicely in the hiveinvite interface yet, for now it only supports HP delegations.
Okay, so I have many account creation tokens, so I can those.
I agree about RC numbers, but thank you for your suggestion, that's a great idea.
First i want to say thank you for working on this tool… very needed! I was excited to give it a test run!
I’m a dipshit so might be doing something wrong… though the page seems simple without many options, but im in a loop of signing successfully but then it telling me im not added to the wallet.
I’m on the keychain app, using the internal browser, and typically when im on a site inside of keychain it auto signs in without issue.
I click sign in with keychain button and it signs successfully, then it loops back to same page, and now i put my user name in..tried hitting enter and hitting sign in with key chain button, but i get the notification not added to wallet. As there are few other variations to do it, im a bit confused as to what im doing wrong. 😬
Possible because it asks for Buttcoins instead of buttcoins - Like the capital letter B is the Problem? gonna check out aswell.
Edit: just checked - yea it's the capital letter problem. just reported to pharesim.
Oh thanks, ill try again now
Yep, that was it, im in! Cheers for that!
Thanks for reporting, I'll make sure it auto corrects invalid usernames soon
It's good but I guess Hive needs to work on retention of users who already are on Hive
I'm really glad to see this come back to life @pharesim... and perfect timing, as I am about to embark on a period of "publishing content on Hive for external consumption" and had been pondering the best way to also enroll potentially interested parties as Hivers.
What I particularly like here is that the process actually links the person offering Hive accounts to the person signing up. One of the weak links (at least to my mind) of efforts to promote Hive is the lack of connection enabling a "recruiter" to connect with "enrollees."
I know some would say "oh, you can just do that through Discord!" but I don't think Facebook would have reached 4 billion users if they had to also have a 3rd party app in order to talk to each other. That's blogging, 1997 style....
It's great to see improvements in that area, which is onboarding, since it's a common issue.
