I've taken the opportunity of being off work to get out and do some hunting a few times in the last week or so and I thought, because it's been a long time since I've posted anything about hunting, I'd do a short post outlining one of my shots.
I enjoy the stalk - finding animal tracks, then the actual target and stalking to get close (I like the challenge) - and so I tend to shoot at inside the range of 350 metres a lot, a fairly easy shot for a trained long range shooter. I like hunting at greater distances as well though often taking shots out to 1300-1500 metres as it brings a different set of skills and requirements and I like to keep my skills sharp.
My latest hunt wasn't at quite that range but I made a pretty nice shot at 785 metres hitting the target exactly where I wanted to and immediately dispatching the animal and I was pretty happy with it.
Below (second image down) is the DOPE chart I used on that evening, created using my StrelokPro ballistics app, and based on the rifle I was using as per the first image below.
DOPE stands for data on previous engagement - essentially a chart created based on the rifle and bullet type and characteristics and various known factors like muzzle velocity, ballistic coefficient, weight of the projectile and so on. It's used to determine the trajectory of a bullet under certain circumstances and factors in wind direction and speed, altitude, humidity, which allows the shooter to make adjustments to the windage and elevation on the scope turrets to land the shot in the intended place.
Below you can see my rifle profile and the various known data I gathered from the environment in the seconds leading up to the shot. These were put into the ballistics calculator and it spat out the DOPE.

As I said, the range I hit the target at was 785 metres, measured with my laser rangefinder, and it was stationary; not a super easy shot but not the most difficult either.
The wind was coming across my right shoulder at 4.5mph (so from 146° or about 5 o'clock) which is typically called half value. This means the wind will have (about) half the effect on the bullet as it flies than if the wind was coming from the 3 or 9 o'clock which would be "full value". Makes perfect sense to me, hope you're keeping up. I was also shooting at an angle of -14° as I was on the side of a hill shooting into a small valley. The bullet was in-flight for 1.11 seconds so I had to make sure I'd shoot at a point when the target would be still, sometimes difficult to gauge as animals tend to move around a bit. I took the shot as it came up from cropping grass to look around.
Below you'll see the chart and can work out what I "dialled" (into the elevation turret) to make the shot...that's the U5.2 in the ELEVATION column. That means I brought the cross hairs up 5.2 MRAD to arc the projectile into the target as shooting flat (zero MRAD) would see the projectile succumb to gravity and air pressure long before it hit the target. (It's science.)
You'll also note the windage column and because the wind was relatively slow that adjustment was only 0.3MRAD to the right. I didn't dial that in, I just "held over" which means I aimed the cross hair 0.3MRAD to the right of where I wanted the projectile to land allowing for the fact the wind would push it over.

With the last point in mind, here's an image from StrelokPro of the exact reticle (SKMR3) I use in my scope, the K624i 6-24x50 made by Kahles.
All those little marks mean something and that red dot is where I would aim if I chose to hold over completely (not to dial in the adjustments). Keep in mind, the DOPE chart I did topped out at 850m so that red dot shows the point of aim (POI) for that range, not the 785m I actually shot at. (See the blue target distance text in the top right quadrant.) You can see varying ranges in red though and that's how one works out the various hold-overs.

Anyway, I'm trying to keep this really simple so people might understand so I've left out a lot of technical stuff that's critical to a shot like this - you don't need to know.
The net result of all my training, shooting practice, the science of making my own precision ammunition and understanding the scientific principles of what it takes to make a long range shot...is that something died. A deer. (And it'll be on the BBQ at some stage.)
And, that's about it.

Nice shot! Used to love Strelok app. Very disappointed that it's gone from U.S. app store from stupid politics. Trying to get used to using Applied Ballistics app, but I don't like it near as well. Haven't tried the new quantum paid version yet. The basic ones like "shooter", and "chairgun" just don't meet the needs.
That's a pretty flat shooter, love those 500 and 800 yard stats. Surprised that you zero in your longer range rifles at 100 and not 200 yards? One of the things I used to love about the 22-250 round is that it shoots the same at 50 yards and 200 yards with just a slight one inch rise at 100 yards. That gives me a bit more scope adjustment if needed at the far end, but I generally don't outshoot my scope any longer as mostly under 500 these days.
Enjoy those grilled straps!
I still use StrelokPro but it's blocked on the app store so no updates. It's annoying really, but with Russia being sanctioned as they are it is what it is. I used to use Applies Ballistics all the time and it was good but I think not as easy as StrelokPro which is why I switched. I think I'll have to go back to AB though.
As for the zero. You're right, I do zero at 200 for my long guns but this one is my basic culling platform so have done it at 100 metres because it's rarely shot at much over 350 and a lot of the time at 80-150. You can see from the most recent chart that even at 350m it's only slightly over 1 MRAD so easy enough to hold over rather than dial. Sometimes I need to be super quick as kangaroos can be skittish. Makes it easier (simpler) with a 100m zero at under 200m.
The 300WM and a couple others are zeroed at 200m for sure but they rarely shoot under 1000m.
I sold my 22-250 but man was that thing a laser! So flat and the energy imparted was immense for such a light calibre.
Gotcha, I do the same zero-ing for mine. Depends on the majority of intended use and distance. Just like a woman choosing shoes lol. Just wanted to see if you had other reasons to add to my process :). I zero my .338 at 100 vs. 200 for similar reasons. While it is better suited for the longer ranges, I never seem to see those nowadays, so just sight it in for 100 and shoot out to 500. Not sure if or when I'll ever get back to the 1,000 yard stuff, but wicked out to 500 :)
I really love sending rounds out to great distances, it's satisfying, but I just don't get out there as much as I used to a few years back. I used to be out every second weekend but I guess life gets in the way...and after 35 years of being dedicated to it it's ok to pull back slightly.
I think some people would be surprised at what goes into what some have to learn to be skilled at something like being a long range shooter. People see Hollywood movies of cool guys kicking doors and shit and think that its all fun and games and just a bunch of low IQ neanderthals. When in reality you have guys learning what you just dropped, maybe dive physics, possibly radio wave propagation, and more. Good on the deer my friend, enjoy it along with some well earned brews.
Hollywood movies have a lot to answer for with how they depict certain things, but also it say a lot about those who take those depictions as anything but entertainment; the reality of things is usually far removed from what's portrayed.
As for shooting, someone taking their understanding of guns and shooting from movies and TV shows is rarely going to work well in a real-world situation. It's the same for those who think video games are accurate.
#clueless
Scary shit. Would have been better if it got her in the head.
I often get a chuckle out of seeing someone think they know better than the person trying to instruct them and scope eye ensues.
Remember that AD that occured with that instructor? Fucktard.
HOlly crap! I never seen that before.
Lol, that dude needs a decent beating.
BBQ deer, now I would be happy to be there to eat it, must be food of the heaven
I wouldn't be able to butcher a dead animal, my stomach can't handle blood
How it works there? You need a license or the state decides a period where you can hunt or you can do whatever you want?
Long range shot takes skill but too long takes away the enjoyment of stalk, get close un spotted and such i guess?
Venison is pretty good to eat and I have some really great rubs that I use on it...bloody tasty!
Here, I need a license for have a firearm and there's different types. I have a higher level due to the firearms I own and there's stricter regulations around that license. Hunting can be done all year around, but a permit is required and there's laws around what can be hunted. We don't have to wear high-visibility clothing here like in some countries (I usually wear camouflage) and that's about it. I mean, there's specific laws around many aspects of it but it gets complicated to explain and this is not the place for it; essentially it's a pretty straight forward process once one knows the law.
Sounds a bit easier than here, and I reckon you don't invade private gardens or properties, here hunters often get near cities and do this
Different country, different laws and ways of doing things I guess.
I just got home from a trip to hell and back. Highways are rougher than usual on the holidays. Couple that with weekend and you have the perfect storm of stupidity. Wrecks everywhere. Took me nearly 8 hours to make a 5 and a half hour run.
The steak I just had on the Barby made that struggle a little more worth the effort. That and the puppy kisses I got from our newest family member Cheyenne (Shy)
Steaks on the BBQ always seem to make things better.
Sounds like a shit haul though, typical for the holidays, all those wankers out on the roads. No way around it for the working man though.
You got much planned for new years' eve? I'm having a BBQ at my house with some friends, pretty low key.
No plans bro.
Best guess is campfire and a few cold ones if not stuck in the truck.
Everything is fluid right now with this truck sale purgatory I have crawled into.
Good news tho I guess. A couple that team trucks is stopping by around 10 am Sunday to look it over and go for a ride. And another man that has really been trying to buy it just got approved for a small loan as He already has half the money. He says he is signing the loan papers Monday and coming to get it. We will see I guess.
The 2 Lonestar trucks I was eyeballing are sold by now I am sure.
Here they are... Or were. 🙄
Both good looking trucks, a shame to miss out on them but something else will come up if there gone.
It'll be w weight off your shoulders when you trucks gone, hopefully one of those deals comes together and you can move it on soon.
No sale today. But a good showing and they are gonna think about it for a few days.
On to the next guy this Monday. 👍
That's something. It feels like there's a lot on the market for people to choose from, is that true?
Oh yes, flooded big time. 😉
Wow, the details and data it reveals are fascinating. It's a whole physics study embedded in the trajectory and everything else needed to reach the target.
Is a learned skill, anyone could do it...with the right instruction and intelligence.
It's definitely something you can learn. But you describe it with such precision, so I imagine it must be enjoyable too. I'm fearful and maybe I run away instead of hunting when I hear footsteps 😅
I guess running away depends on what's being hunted. I'd rather face things than have them at my back.
It's really been a long time since you've been hunting and I know that you love it, as well as the contact with nature. I was reading how many things there are to know in this wisdom and I remembered that my brother told me: I want to learn to hunt, to live in the countryside and always eat meat from animals hunted by me. At that time I had no idea of all the science involved.
Deer meat is delicious, I had the joy of tasting it twice, enjoy it!
It's not been long since I went hunting really, just a fairly long time since I posted about it.
As for venison, yep it's bloody good.
Then I'm glad you went again, doing what you enjoy is good for the spirit.
You know? In the new year I will eat authentic Argentinian meat.😆
Argentinian...the second best beef in the world, after Australian.
😆
You got some meat to grill with your friends on New Year's Eve 🙂
I have never shot with a rifle that has optics.
In training I shot with the M70AB2, at distances of 100m, 200m, 300m (short bursts) and then single fire at 400m and 600m.
We shot illuminated targets, and they gave us marking bullets(tracers).
When I had hit all the targets, I was given permission to fire the remaining rounds from the magazine.
But then I didn't shoot myself anything edible for dinner.
As a reward, I ate canned food 😅
Ah yes, the Zastava M70 7.62x39mm, a reverse engineered copy of the Russian AK-47.
Well, not something I'd take hunting but shooting tracer rounds can be fun no matter what the rifle. And yep, venison on NYE for sure.
I'm glad you are finding a way to enjoy yourself while you are off work!
One must make the best use of time of right?
For sure!
Awwww 🥹, the view looks amazing! You're really having a great day to enjoy yourself in that wonderful place.
Indeed.
