Sail away one day - being responsible vs being free

in Outdoors and more2 years ago (edited)

I've always been the responsible one. One day though, I'd like to sail away.

I love sailing, though I rarely get to. Rarely as in it's been years. Yesterday I got a totally unsuspected invite: to sail away one week, free, as a deckhand on a two masted schooner.

Wait, what?

A friend of my wife's is a part of some restore old ships foundation and one schooner was in need of ten deckhands. Evidently, the friend cannot find anyone willing to take up the offer. The ship (yacht?) was two masted schooner, no less. Those boats just have the "it" factor...grace and romanticism just seep out of them in oodles. Something about the balance of the dual masts and sleek look, the "sheer", I guess, just gives them that mystique and beauty. There are reasons people paint these and hang them on their walls. In maritime terms, she's "yar."

The friend seriously asked if I could get off work for a week to sail.

Wow. I'm off this week, but back to work next week. I was asked, "Any way to get out of work for a week?" The truthful answer is likely, "Yes." But, I've always been the responsible one. Shedding work for a week of sailing doesn't jive with my DNA. It doesn't jive, nor does it jibe, heh heh. Jibing is always a dangerous sailing move...masts get snapped and heads get clonked and hands get swept overboard. So, the answer will be no for now.

Still, wow. One day.

Good video on how to join!

Are you talking about the Hive Animation video? If so, that one was a fair amount of work, but really was a joy to make.

Yes the Hive Animation video, informative and adorable.

UPDATE: The schooner trip got cancelled after all. I did learn the name of the vessel: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harvey_Gamage_(schooner) Apparently, the drive shaft and engine went kaput. Ironic that engine failures scratch a sailing ship! (I know, an engine is necessary for getting into and out of port.) Glad I didn't take another week off from work. Because, if I did, I'd have to just spend another week on vacation!

Ah yes. The age old challenge of how old do we have to be to give ourselves permission to live the dream?

That pretty much sums it up. The frustrating thing is that I see a whole lot of people, far younger than me, who seemed to simply skip the responsibility part and have gone right to the sail away free part. I'm not sure who's in the right and who's in the wrong.

It's a hard one for sure. When the stars align sometimes you've got to consider shirking a little responsibility haven't you?

So, you not going? That invitation, for me, would be a one-of-a-kind that i'd immediately jump into. Unfortunately, no such yatchs around here (if any?!) let alone knowing the people who sail them. But that's me xD a broke jobless dude.

Come on, it's just a week.

I wish you the best of luck that you will follow up on that dream one day.
