IYC Contest - The Victor, symbol of peace in Serbia

Hello everyone and hello to the IYC community. I hope you are all well and living in peace.

This is my entry to the IYC Contest "Symbols and Signs for Peace".

Peace is so much needed, and unfortunately, we are witnessing a time when the human race has not reached the level of development that will stop it from endangering peace.

I live in Belgrade, the capital of Serbia. I have experienced two wars and I know very well what peace is. After the wars, I learned to appreciate free breath, free steps, and the absence of fear.

The symbol of peace in my city is the monument "The Victor", located in the Kalemegdan fortress, a popular attraction of historical significance. "Pobednik" translated as "The Victor" was built in 1928 to commemorate Serbia's victory over Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian Empire during the Balkan Wars and the First World War.

As you can see in the pictures it is a strong male figure in the nude with a falcon in the left hand and a sword in the right. The sword is lowered and it symbolizes peace. And the falcon symbolizes freedom. Peace and freedom are mutually conditioned.

There have been various stories about this monument in the past. The story I read, which was funny to me, was that at the time this monument was built, it was scandalous because of the nude, so there was a suggestion that "The Victor" get dressed. Or that they set it so high that the naked body could be seen as little as possible. 🙂

The monument overlooks the confluence of the Sava and the Danube. And I am there too. I am looking in the same direction. 🙂

The view is fantastic for those who like to relax and look into the distance and I am one of them.

Around "The Victor", you can see a lot of tourists every day. It is the most frequently photographed monument and probably the most popular.

I will never understand the destructive side of human nature and the lack of peace in the world because every war is lost at the beginning. Let's hope for peace.

I invite my friends @coquicoin @tengolotodo @duvinca to join this awesome contest and inspiring idea by @beeber.

Thank you very much for reading.

The images and writing are original and mine.

Greetings from Belgrade!

But also the way you talk about! Ful of peace, love and apreciating life. Haha I also had to laugh because in 1928 they wanted to dress the Victor :-D
And as I am from Austria I feel I have to say I am happy that our grandparents finally found a way to make the first steps to a free and peaceful life side by side in Europe.Wow dear @jelenaa thank you so much for this great entry to the contest. It's just amazing! Not only the photos and the story behind wich is so good!

Thank you so much, I'm glad you liked my story, it was my pleasure to participate! It's really funny that they wanted to dress him 🤣 The Victor was originally supposed to be placed in the center of the city, but they opposed it because it was a scandal that such a big naked man was in that place, so they put him where he is now. 😊 They say he is looking in the direction of Austria. 😊 I am also happy that our grandparents have found a way to live in peace, I hope that others can do the same in this modern society.

A wonderful contest entry from someone who truly understands peace! ♥️✌️♥️l

Thank you very much! 😊 We really need peace so much for a normal life, and unfortunately there is always the fear that we may lose it.

I liked the view from there too :)

Oh, you were in that place. The view is really fantastic. 😊

One of my favorite monuments in Serbia. So clean and beautiful and I like placing of it.
Lovely photos! And I am glad I found you here as well :D

Hey my friend, I am glad to see you! 😊 Yes, "Pobednik" is truly a special monument.

Great entry.
I could not agree more
"I will never understand the destructive side of human nature and the lack of peace in the world because every war is lost at the beginning."
Unfortunatelly, humanity seems destined to repeat the same mistakes once and again. No amount of stories of loss and destruction, no amount of monuments will ever be enough to stop this madness. I see it as a roulette. Every year, it goes around and a new country joins in the horrible statistics of war. No need for any of that at this point in history, in my opinion, but the world is ruled by mad people.
May your people always enjoy peace and prosperity!Hi, @jelenaa

Everything you said is true. I have been taught in my studies that there are many ways to negotiate to avoid war but theory, experience and lost lives do not seem to be enough for people to focus their power on something good and not destructive. Thanks. Let's hope for a peaceful life.

Thanks for the invitation, I'm going to check this contest 😉
By the way, I didn't know Belgrade but I didn't imagine it's as beautiful as you show us!!! I love that panoramic view of the Danube river, the blue view is always inspiring to me.

I can't wait to read your post. 🙂 Spain is a beautiful country. And Belgrade has a great free spirit. That's why I love it.

Thanks Jelena, I have been meaning to join this. I love the nude man high up high🤣🤣🤣
The Danube I cruised up and down there😁😁

Haha they made sure to put him too high 🤣 High enough to be barely visible. 🤣 I would like to see some symbol of peace in Scotland.

Yes I need to see what we have, I have a small one in my local park, that might have to do.

I believe that having lived through a war, you can understand better than most the horror of it. And also, you can appreciate even more what peace in its full dimension implies.
Thank you for inviting me to participate. I will certainly join this nice initiative. Un abrazo!

Memories of the war are always reminder of how important peace is. It is a topic that always inspires. I am glad that you will join, I would like to see some symbol of peace in Venezuela. Un abrazo más grande para ti amiga😊
