Spanish Royal mint face value exchange series
I wrote about these coins I found on the Spanish royal mint site some months ago, wondering if I should buy them seeing that they are 0.925 silver but do have a high face value. In fact, they are 40 euros to buy, so exactly the same as the face value.
So this is actually the most important reason that I considered buying one or two of the face value exchange series. I figured even though it's sterling silver, they could be nice to add to the collection. Especially when I saw some offered on auction sites and people paying more than the cost price for it. I'm not going to auction them though, I will just keep them myself. It's not worth the risk that a lucky bidder wins it below cost price because I saw there was no reserve price in these auctions.
Long delay with shipments
I had to wait pretty long for this order to be processed because they were far behind. There was a notification on the website about this, I figured it takes another week but it was much longer. Thankfully, last week I finally received the news that my coins would be delivered this week. Let's have a look at the first one..
Obverse: the head of Princess of Asturias, Doña Leonor de Borbón y Ortiz facing left.
*Reverse: Coloured personal coat of Arms of the Princess of Asturias. *
Within a circle, in the form of a quadruple latent image, a schematized Victory Cross, the Mint mark, a royal crown and the number 23 appear.
Better than I thought
I expected to be at least a bit disappointed seeing it in real life because of the lower silver percentage but this wasn't the case at all. In fact, I fully enjoyed the two coins and the sound they make even when still wrapped in the mint plastic. For now, I will just leave them in there because when I see them offered online, they are usually within the mint plastic. This way they will stay as they are..
Although I thought that this coin was going to be my favourite, it's questionable if the second one I received is more to my liking. You can decide for yourself in a few days when I share that one..
Still some more silver on the way, so I can happily keep sharing the silver purchases in the next weeks. Love it!

I think this is a lovely choice, the designs of the reverse and obverse appear balanced and consistent with Spain's numismatic and regal history. The Face Value denomination gives this coin a minimum base value regardless of silver price. We at #sgs know better knowing that silver will have it's day returning to it's role as a monetary metal and will be worth much more than the face value.
Canada's Royal Canadian mint did a similar promotion programs; $20 for $20, $50 for $50, and the $100 for $100. However, a regional bank wouldn't accept these from public circulation in exchange for banknotes. But the court ruled them as legal tender.
An enterprising American fellow purchased a $100 for $100 coin from Ebay $10 over spot price, went to a Canadian bank for $100CAD and made off with a tidy profit.
More important is that you !LUV this silver coin.

Personally, I wouldn't have mind for the coloured part to be silver. It's not adding much for me to be fair but it seems all of these coins (at least the last 3 years) have a coloured side.
Honestly, that story in Canada you shared doesn't even surprise me, and this crossed my mind as well that once people would want to exchange them, they'd be told no. I took my chances though and have two of these coins now, we'll see.
I'm a bit disappointed having to watch them from behind plastic with the printing on top of the face of the princess but I guess leaving it in there is the smart thing to do.
