Introduction

So I will leave the rest of the post the same but changed the title so it's clear which coin this is thanks to some help from @dbooster. The coin turns out to be from 1908 the Meiji era rather than as advertised 1914 Taisho era. I'm mainly happen it doesn't turn out to be a fake but it's the real (slightly different) deal.

I will add the Numista info for those that could be searching for more info themselves in the future:

Consider the rest of the post my search for answers, which I now have thanks to Dbooster!

Something new

While I was in a nice flow of sharing some things old, I figured maybe I can throw in something new in between as well. I never expected this to be the first of the something new shiny on the way because it was literally shipped on Wednesday and delivered on Thursday. Honestly, this never happened to me before, especially not using a drop off point. I'm not complaining though because the two coins I ordered from the Royal Spanish mint are delayed so much that they probably won't start processing the orders from two weeks ago until early September, so they told me.

Old stuff out, new stuff in

Although I have plenty of stuff to list and sell, I hate the part where you have to deal with people asking questions and then never getting back to you or ending up buying your stuff. Yet every now and then, I list a few things and hope for the best. It's not a must to get rid of it, it just feels nice to have a bit of balance to buy something that I wish to have in my collection. Most stuff that I sell takes in space, while my buys are usually coin related so at least I had a win there.

Some balance waiting to be spend

Usually, when I sell something, I already have something bookmarked as favourite to buy when some balance appears in my wallet but this time the balance was unused for about 1,5 months. I aimed for some old coins from Japan as these kept popping up on my feed and they are little pieces of art if you ask me. Every time I clicked on them, they were reserved already, sadly. This time I went browsing and found a seller who had 1 coin from Japan which I wanted to buy. I gathered 4 coins in total (not all silver) and decided to spend a few bucks extra to make shipping worth it. I didn't expect them to arrive this quickly though.

1914 Japanese 10 Sen

I don't know about you but I love the flower designs on this coin. Besides ceramic art hunting, I know very little (actually too little) about Japan but the things that I know usually involves beauty in some way. The fine art coming from Japan is incredible and both me and my partner love it when we bump on art from Japan on flea markets. Yet, I never really found Japanese coins there so I could admire them in person.

Online will have to do for now, but this seller had a lot of reviews and there's buyers protection as well so if the item would not be as described, I could return it without any costs on my hand. I will first show you the reverse below:

This is the info from Numista:

If you didn't spot it yet, now look closely.. it's immediately clear to me that this is not the coin the seller said it is, sigh. Of course it's possible that it's a modern mint of this old coin and therefore less detailed but so far I had a hard time finding anything about it. The listing said it's silver and three of the 5 coins I have sound like silver to me as well. Still, I'm quite disappointed to be fair because I see that the original one is far more sophisticated than the one I'm holding.

Even though I first thought it was dirt making the letters pop more and therefore look different, now I see the fine Japanese art vs the cheap rip-off which I already considered pretty the first day I had it. Oh well, it was nice while it lasted, lol.

Brings back memories

This instantly brings back memories to these art hunting days where we we'd find Japanese ceramics, in the beginning of our journey we were fooled by the rip offs but at some point, you easily spot the differences and often it came down to the same thing: the real stuff was much more detailed. More sophisticated so the speak. I can say that this is a great example of that as well.

I opened a dispute to see if this is a breach of their terms selling it as if it's that coin while it's probably a reproduction of the old one. And also to find out if the seller admits it, I'm not sure yet if I will return it because it wasn't an expensive purchase and I still like it. In fact, I was actually thinking that I should buy more small coins like this so I can hear the silver sound more often without ruining these capsuled 1oz ones..

Anyone who has more info, maybe you know anything about this @dbooster? I'm happy to hear about it..

All pictures above are my own.

Level of detailing on floral design is simply suberb. It's japanese work afterall.

This little 1958 100 Yen 0.600 Silver coin got me started on my Japan Collection, another collecting sidetrack.

Looking more closely at the obverse the characters are different on your coin than the Numista database has.
Even dealers can get it wrong, considering the volume they move and most of us cannot read Japanese. I learned that Numbers are the same in Japanese and Chinese.
It may not be worth the effort exchanging, I presume you notified the Dealer of the error? @thisismylife

I've seen that one as well but it's always gone immediately.. I love most of these designs to be honest.

I finally have answers thanks to @dbooster's help. The coin turns out to be Meiji era and from 1908 instead of 1914 Taisho era.

The dealer has a high rep and I see the coins that aren't silver, are not marked as silver, so I was waiting to see if anything weird would pop up with some help while I already decided I wanted to keep the coin anyway but at least then I'd know not to buy from him again or that I can still trust him.

Dbooster already mentioned it's easy to mistake the eras if you don't understand Japanese so I can see how this was just a little error. It's one of the few dealers that constantly offer some Japanese coins so I'm going to take my chances with him again and probably all will go well then :)

Thanks for sharing your piece too, I really love all the designs from Japan so far.

The actual design looks the same to me. The one you got is just old and worn, whereas the one photoed on Numista is mint. Very often if you are buying ungraded old coins, the dealer will try to send you ones in bad condition. I don't think it's a fake. It looks like the real thing. If it was a fake, it wouldn't be worn like that.

Personally I kind of prefer when they are a little worn. It shows me that it was well used and makes me wonder about the people who previously held the coin years ago.

Your coin is actually from the Meiji era, not Taisho. 明治四十一 is Meiji 41, or 1908. If the person you bought from isn't Japanese, it's an easy mistake to make. All kanji look the same to many, after all.

I don't have any for that year, but I have two for the year after

IMG_2851.jpeg

IMG_2852.jpeg

So comparing yours to mine does it mean that the part I marked is just worn off as it only seems to miss the second smaller stripe in the writing.. Now I get why I didn't notice it was another era..

image.png

一 on your coin means 1. 二 on my coin means two. The first few numbers in Japanese are pretty simple 😃

LOL, got it now! Thanks !PIMP

Hey, thanks for showing up as I was hoping that you'd be able to clarify a bit.. the thing is, it was advertised as 1914 Taisho, so that's what I looked up on Numista and found this:

image.png

Initially I didn't notice the difference which I marked with green, as I also thought it's just been used more and therefore looks different. But if you check the same part on my coin:"

image.png

It's not the same. Now I wonder if that's because of the different era you mention, so now I will go to Numista to check the ones from the Meiji era. Can you tell me what mine says vs what the one on Numista says though?

Again thanks for the help :) !PIMP

Yours says 明治四十一年 which means "Meiji 41", which is 1908

The kanji are reversed on your coin because at the time the writing system was right to left. It has flipped since then, so I can't type out that way easily.

The one in the other says 大正六年 which means "Taisho 6", which is 1917. Again, the kanji is reversed on the coin.

So it is the same coin, just a different year than promised. The late Meiji coins had the same silver content, so there is no real difference unless you are collecting for dates.

Well, it's just a little older than advertised, I still like the coin and are mostly happy that it doesn't turn out to be a real fake. It's just slightly different than I thought. It turns out to be a little difficult to figure out what is what so I learned but man I still hope to find some other Japanese coins because I saw some really pretty ones.

If you happen to have any for sale, please please let me know !LOL

The Taisho coins might be a little more rare. Hmm.. I'm not sure offhand. I'd have to dig out my notes.

If I ever am looking to unload some of my Japanese coins, you'll be the first to know 😃

Some nice lessons above, thank you so much! !LUV

And if you ever do, please let me know, as I'm intrigued by these coins..

!PIMP

Yep, that's it

Great, added a bit of text in the post and changed it in Numista. Thanks so much for the help !LUV

You're very welcome!

!PIMP

That is really a nice coin, it's just too bad the seller didn't advertise it correctly. I personally know little about oriental coins so I've shied away from them over the years. It is a pretty coin and the flower design is beautiful. Are you going to keep it or send it back do you think?
!PIMP

I now believe it was a little mistake as dbooster explained this is easily mistaken by someone not understanding Japanese. In the end it turns out to be Meiji era and from 1908 instead of 1914 Taisho era. Yes, I'm keeping it :)

!PIMP

It's a nice coin, I would too!
I don't remember on PIMP numbers either, we'll try it again just in case

Silver American dimes (Mercury dimes or Roosevelt dimes) are small coins and give a very nice high-pitch silver sound like no other. You should get those instead, @thisismylife! They are 90% silver. That is, if you come across them !LOL.

Taking note, I will look for them, and damn what a beauty you have there! I saw a similar (not sure if it was the same lol as my Japanese is rusty !LOL) and they were all either reserved, sold or high priced. But I'm hopeful to catch another one soon. Meanwhile, I will look for the Mercury and Roosevelt dimes because silver buys will be a monthly thing now.

Upgrading the collection monthly is something I looked forward too for a long time :)
