posted about how he got into stacking silver and Gold. His post was based on a promptI follow @trumpman here on Hive. Today he from @thisismylife asking that very question. That got me thinking about how my own journey stated.
My first exposure to the concept of stacking silver was in grade school in the 1960's. Kids brought money to school to buy milk. The lunch lady collected their money and made change using a cupcake tin. One of my classmates always had money that his parents sent him to school with. He would exchange paper bills and 1965+ coins for any (pre-1965) 90% silver coins in the change tray, and bring those home to his parents...Gresham's Law in action :)
My father had a similar experience. Prior to the advent of Federal Reserve Notes, US paper currency was marked “silver certificate,” and was exchangeable for silver bullion at the mint. My father ate lunch at a diner where the owner would collect all the silver certificate notes, and 90% silver coins too. This gave my father the idea to do the same when he came across any. A one year period, June 1967 to 1968, was the final time to exchange silver certificates for silver bullion. My father drove us all from LA to San Francisco to cash in his paper currency for silver bullion at the Mint, but we missed the deadline :( It wasn't until years later that I learned that my parents kept their "junk silver" in a bag that was accessed by pulling out the bottom drawer in the kitchen cabinets. My father told me today that he still has it, but it has been moved.
My first foray into stacking occurred during the days preceding Y2K, when we feared that the entire monetary system would freeze-up as computers tried to handle 12/31/99 -> 01/01/00. After minimal research, I bought a bag of "junk silver" (90% US coins). But, even with all the experiences recounted above, it wasn’t until years later, around 2008, that I began to buy more junk silver and some gold too. I mostly bought at local coin shops, and still do. Recognizing the space constraints of 90% silver, I started to buy bars and rounds in the past few years. But, talk about space constraints, I also collect copper pennies (1982 and earlier) when I find them in my change. My reason for stacking hasn't changed...I'm still convinced the entire monetary system will collapse. I have never sold any silver or gold, and don't plan to.
As far back as 2000. Back then I was more distracted with other things but I smarted up 2014 so I started with my father's coin collection and added a few bullion coins every payday.
Adding a few bullion coins every payday is the way to go. Consistent dollar-cost-averaging pays off.
That's a great story! Sorry to hear your dad missed the deadline for redeeming those certificates. 😔

Yeah. I talked with him last night to refresh my memory. I knew he had the silver certificates, but I just learned last night that he got the idea from that diner owner.

From what I read, you would probably be very interested in what I write about... Let me know what you think...
I believe you're correct. You have a new follower. I think I need to read and reread your vision of the coming monetary reset, but at least I think that I'm pretty well positioned if what you predict comes to pass.

Anyone holding Silver will be very pleased by the time we make it to Phase 3 of the Reset...
I'm a believer. I don't see any downside to holding silver.
What most people can't see, is that our Common U.S. Coinage is going to "out-perform" Silver, Sold and all the Cryptocurrencies, in Phase One of the U.S. Monetary Correction...
I'm definitely gonna be glad that I almost never spend coinage. I empty it into a bank in my closet, and just carry federal reserve notes for spending.
That's what I do... I spend the Paper and Pocket the Change... Because I figure our Common U.S. Coinage will increase 100 Fold in Spending Power, I always get back 50 Cents when I buy Gasoline for my Car... I figure, the 100 Fold increase in Spending Power will end up making all the Gasoline I bought, free... I've been doing this, ever since it occurred to me...
US Constitutional silver is the way to go.
I love them!!! It's the mesmerizing sound of clinking and tinkling when a silver coin hits another silver coin that gets me!

I couldn 't agree more! It's funny that it took so long for me to start stacking considering such an early exposure and education.
!LOLThere is a reason for everything, @kunschj ! It takes focus.

Such a cool story, it is fun to hear the different stories People have about how their stacking started. Some at very young Age and some recently.
To bad your dad missed that deadline, but I am sure you have one impressive stack today 😉
I started late in life at 2017, and only after meeting stack People in silvergoldstackers community.
Thank you for sharing this and have a wonderful weekend. 🤗🌹🤗
Hello @kunschj, first of all, my apologies for catching up with engagement after your post has reached the payout window. I know you read my posts about the hospital, so I'm sure you'll understand. The good thing is, today I'm catching up and writing the winners post, make sure to check it (hint hint).
This is a very cool story and I can't help but wonder if my grandparents would have had some hidden coin treasures in their house back in the days too. Either way, It's another great story of how someone rolled into stacking and I appreciate you sharing it!
Wishing you a great day <3
Thank you. I totally understand. I wish you a good day as well!
