The 1974 Indonesian Rp 5000 Silver Coin

in Silver Gold Stackers2 months ago (edited)

Hey silver stackers! Let's dive deeper into the world of Indonesian silver coins. Last time, we explored the fascinating 1 1974 Indonesian Rp 2000 coin . Today, we're turning our attention to its bigger brother, the 1974 Rp 5000 silver coin.

A Commemorative Coin with a Purpose

Unlike its circulating counterparts, the 1974 Rp 5000 is a commemorative coin. This means it was minted for a specific purpose, rather than everyday use. In this case, it's a beautiful tribute to Indonesia's rich biodiversity.

A Collaboration for Conservation

The coin is a result of a partnership between Indonesia and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). This collaboration underscores the country's commitment to protecting its natural heritage. Minted by the Royal Mint, the coin boasts a mintage of 43,000 pieces, making it a relatively rare find.

Just like its Rp 2000 sibling, the Rp 5000 coin comes in two versions: the standard and the proof. I managed to get my hands on the standard version, which contains 50% silver.

A Glimpse into the Rainforest

The obverse side of the coin is a visual treat. It showcases an orangutan gracefully swinging through lush, green foliage. The coin's denomination, Rp 5000, is prominently displayed at the bottom.

On the reverse, we find the iconic Garuda Pancasila, Indonesia's national emblem, along with the year of issue, 1974. This side of the coin symbolizes the country's sovereignty and the coin's historical context.

A Symbol of Conservation

The choice of the orangutan as the coin's centerpiece is a powerful statement. These intelligent apes were already facing severe threats to their habitat at the time of the coin's minting. By featuring the orangutan, Indonesia aimed to raise awareness about deforestation and poaching, and to inspire conservation efforts.

A Lucky Score

As I mentioned in my previous post, I managed to snag both the Rp 2000 and Rp 5000 coins in a bundle deal. But I didn't stop there. I later found a graded version of the Rp 5000 coin – an NGC MS62! It was an incredible find, and I couldn't resist adding it to my collection.

That's all for now, silver stackers! Stay tuned for more exciting coin adventures. Until next time, keep shining!

Thank you for stopping by and read my post. Hope you have a wonderful day my friend

Wow, I never know such coin exist. Do you know @ekavieka ?

So far I have never seen it in real life.
as it is only for commemorative I guess it is worth collecting. Lets start hunting. hahah

Yeah, it's a commemorative coin with a limited mintage. You can see what coins are issued by our country at this link, Bli. Both circulation coins and commemorative coins are made of silver and even gold. https://en.numista.com/catalogue/index.php?e=indonesie

If it wasn't for my interest in silver stacking, I wouldn't have known that our country ever issued silver coins. For the Rp 2000 Javan Tiger and Rp 5000 Orangutan silver coins, there is a proof version with 92.5% silver content. Much more beautiful than this one.

Bank Indonesia has also issued gold coins with images of Sudirman and Soekarno if I'm not mistaken.

how much did you buy it bli?

I bought it with bundling price for both Rp 2000 Javan Tiger and Rp 5000 Orangutan for Rp 850k Bli. In the Numismatic community, they offer Rp 450-550k for each coin.
For the NGC-graded coin (the last picture above) I bought it for 800k, other sellers sell it starting from 900k
