1984 Prospector Silver Round

I guess now that I have one of these from Engelhard, I am on the way to becoming a real stacker. Frankly I was a little disappointed when it was received. I had intended to get one with an eagle on the back, but it seems years 1982-1984 were minted with both the eagle and the Engelhard "E" on the reverse.

The item description fine print said that the seller would randomly choose either. So I ended up with the "E" reverse. I can live with it though, but will find one with hte eagle on the reverse and add to the stack as well.

The obverse of the round is pretty cool as I let it take me back to the pioneer 49ers' that made their way west to strike it rich. Many though just stayed broke. Some did make their riches though, through other means, such as selling the miners wares or servicing them in some form or fashion.

Yeah, some struck a vein or a little gold and made out with a small fortune. But it seems that by far, many just didn't make it searching for all the gold that moving West had promised.

I wonder if I could have roughed it like they did to pan a stream, hour after hour, finding nothing most all the time. Yeah, the roughing it part, in my younger days, I could handle. The panning constantly and finding nothing would get to me after a while though.

Do you think you could have been a 49er type and live like that back then?

Nope, but I can think of other ways I can earn a living in providing variety of useful services for 49ers as a business and maybe get paid in gold.

With you as I would get bored real quick panning for it. Joe's Hardware and Variety Store might be something I would be more apt to try and run.

In my younger years I could have done that, but I've always preferred a metal detector honestly, Even in the shallows of a river it can pick stuff up to know where to pan. That is a seriously nice round though, it's in great shape!

Speaking of metal detectors, I have a brand spankin' new one still in the box that I haven't even used yet. THat is another project I can put on the list for spring. Problem is finding places around here you are allowed to use it.

That is a growing issue everywhere, restrictions on where you can look. I know guys in New Mexico who will only detect somewhere with no one around because the laws are so goofy. Check the state laws and local laws. prospecting local communities are a great resource too. They usually know where's safe to search. Don't let that shiny new detector collect too much more dust!
