The Ágora Museum | València | ENG / ESP

The building that now houses the El Ágora museum had been closed since its construction was completed 10 years ago, until a year and a half ago when the authorities and a bank foundation reached an agreement for the latter to convert it into a cultural landmark for the city. The monumental building is the work of the controversial Valencian architect Santiago Calatrava, and is located in the complex of new museums that occupy the old bed of the River Turia, a complex baptised as the City of Arts and Sciences.

On the days we visited, we were able to enjoy an excellent exhibition of 18th and 19th century portraits by the country's most important painters of the time. Individual portraits, others in which the clothing is analysed, close-up portraits, and a very interesting section dedicated to group portraits and their evolution throughout that time. The works on display were loaned by the most important museums in Spain, as well as from private collections.

Los días que lo visitamos, pudimos disfrutar de una excelente exposición de retratos de los siglos XVIII y XIX de los pintores más importantes del país en esa época. Retratos individuales, otros en los que se analiza la indumentaria, retratos de primeros planos, y una muy interesante sección dedicada a los retratos en grupo y su evolución a lo largo de ese tiempo. Las obras mostradas fueron cedidas por los más importantes museos de España, así como de colecciones privadas.

After an exhaustive tour of the entire site, the best thing to do was to go for lunch in the museum restaurant, a modern and pleasant space with an ‘artistic’ menu that had some relation to the exhibitions and with a very affordable price for such a place.
