The building that now houses the El Ágora museum had been closed since its construction was completed 10 years ago, until a year and a half ago when the authorities and a bank foundation reached an agreement for the latter to convert it into a cultural landmark for the city. The monumental building is the work of the controversial Valencian architect Santiago Calatrava, and is located in the complex of new museums that occupy the old bed of the River Turia, a complex baptised as the City of Arts and Sciences.

The external appearance of the building is a bit strange, wanting to look like the hump of a whale when it comes out of the water. In my opinion, it does not achieve the desired effect and the result is rather sad.

Once inside, things change a lot, as the architects who designed the interior space managed to give the place a coherent, modern look that also highlights the most important features of the building. Here we see the entrance to the exhibition rooms and the agora that gives the museum its name, a wooden auditorium with the bookshop and reception desk at the bottom.

Of course, the most important part of the museum are its exhibition rooms. On the days we visited, we were able to enjoy an excellent exhibition of 18th and 19th century portraits by the country's most important painters of the time. Individual portraits, others in which the clothing is analysed, close-up portraits, and a very interesting section dedicated to group portraits and their evolution throughout that time. The works on display were loaned by the most important museums in Spain, as well as from private collections.

After an exhaustive tour of the entire site, the best thing to do was to go for lunch in the museum restaurant, a modern and pleasant space with an ‘artistic’ menu that had some relation to the exhibitions and with a very affordable price for such a place.

Wow, we saw the building many times from the outside, but we didn't get inside... We were inside the sphere, but that one is much smaller...
Now we know where to go when we go to Valencia! Thanks for sharing!

The external appearance of the building is quite weird, and in my point of view not much "brillant", but the interior deserves a relaxed visit. Next time stop and enjoy the well structured space inside.
I’ve seen this part of Valencia on various documentaries and YouTube channels but haven’t yet been. Looks rather cool.
I have passed by Agora countless times... but I have never visited the exhibition rooms. That must be changed by my side!!... but until then I got to see it through your post. Thanks 😇
Many thanks @mipiano for your kind response. There are always very interesting exhibitions there, it definitely worth a visit. Specially the open and free area upstairs.
Obviously the prominent part of the museum is its exhibition room but i like that whale type building most and after an exhausted visit you've had lunch too which is the best thing too.....

Thanks a lot for your comment @les90
When I pay a visit to museums, rather always I had lunch or breakfast at the cafeteria. Nowadays museums have a nice places to eat.
Yes now the museum has a place to eat inside it

Defintely an odd shaped exterior. I quickly forgot about it though after you showed some art and some of what the inside looked like. It's hard to think it took that long to open it once construction was finished. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks a lot @coolmidwestguy for commenting.
There are always political questions in this kind of managements. It was a good instance of that.
Thanks @hivepakistan for supporting and appreciating my work.
