RE: History is Usually Good, Bad and Ugly

Mini! what a wonderful post. You know its a good thing AZthal isn't on Hive because you would have had your ear chewed off in excitment over the details of various Crusades... love our history in this house.

I heard a very interesting quote about 2 months ago... it was someone who was discussing what religion was the "correct" religion and worth fighting to the death for. He said quite simply there are three broad possibilites... either ALL religions are correct and everyone really IS worshiping the same god and god is a broader category, NO religions are correct and God/s are fairy tales that go with the tooth fairy and bedtime stories. OR the other option that of ALL the religions on the earth only 1 tiny little religion is the right one and EVERYONE else is wrong..

Given the revisions to all the religions and wars INSIDE each religion that broadens the discussion again. Council of Nicea, deciding what was IN the bible and what was OUT of the bible being a fairly good example. The versions of just Christianity accross the ages and current day are huge and that is only ONE .

he then went into detail showing that the least likely one is that ONE religion is correct. leaving the idea that god is either a broader concept that religion itself or a fairy tale... I think it was a you tube video somewhere. very interesting...

i don't like the phrase... "you do you" but seriously... ive taken Mass in a Catholic church with friends.... ive been baptized Anglican, participated in Jewish AND Muslim celebrations with a friends family and a large number more. The idea that someone could think that i, or you, or anyone, deserve to die based on a religious upbringing and beliefs is just mental.

I wouldn't even mind having my ear chewed off when it comes to history. 🤣

The three options is an interesting one to ponder and debate. I'm reminded of or English essay options back in school. I'd probably choose the middle one to discuss.

I'm also not super keen on that phrase, probably because of the tone of voice it's usually accompanied by, but it is appropriate in many ways. "Live and let live" is maybe a better one in my mind.

The other day I was wondering why anyone would even care if someone doesn't follow their religion, after all in their mind the heretic will go to hell not them. Then I remembered that when things went wrong, like failed crops, they thought it was because God was displeased with them, so I guess they would believe that the sinners were the problem.

thats good to hear lol, my kids end up with a lot of ear chewing in this house. Current night time television is about the punic wars... lol.

We are a house of Scientists and Historians... we have an uncle that thinks that god placed dinosaur bones in the earth to confuse disbelievers and test believers faith :-)

rolls eyes

anyway i should not debate just interesting things before my second coffee... so i shall go play sims and wait for the caffeine

My hubby and daughters have no interest in history whatsoever. Hubby will tolerate a bit of it, but he's far more interested in arguing something to the contrary that he's heard from some of the more conspiratorial people. 🤣

I have literally only just come across the reference to punic! I'm going to revisit that, but I feel like I'm missing a lot of context at the moment. Currently filling in the gaps on the Protestant reformation.
