El hombre que conquisto Alaska // The man who conquered Alaska

Kurohige dijo una vez que los sueños de las personas jamás terminan y es algo en lo que creo firmemente y para probarlo quiero contarles la historia de uno de mis mejores amigos quien cumplió uno de sus sueños más descabellados: conocer Nueva York.

Su nombre es Luis y es una de las personas más inspiradoras que he tenido el gusto de conocer.

Lo conocí en segundo año de la carrera. Él se había ganado una beca por tener unas excelentes notas el año anterior. Era un tipo alto que amaba el cine y se distinguía por su increíble capacidad de analizar cualquier situación.

Luis ha cumplido dos sueños que por su complejidad lo considero alguien digno de admiración. Y es que estudiar derecho no era la primera opción de Luis. Su principal deseo era estudiar medicina, y para ello tuvo un promedio de notas perfecto desde que estaba en primaria hasta que termino el bachillerato. Pero para ese tiempo estudiar medicina representaba mudarse a otro estado del país y era algo que él no podía costear, por lo que decidió estudiar derecho con la esperanza de que algún día habilitaran la carrera de medicina en nuestra ciudad y ahí empezar sus estudios como médico.

Sin embargo, aunque derecho no era su primera opción, Luis se sentía como pez en el agua, casi siempre era mejor del salón, el que sacaba las mejores notas y el que más destacaba. Y se mantuvo así hasta que faltando un año para terminar la carrera de derecho el destino le dio lo que quería: estudiar medicina. Por sus capacidades logro conseguir un cupo en la Universidad de los Andes y empezó a estudiar la carrera de medicina y derecho en paralelo. Y así lo hizo, termino la carrera de derecho siendo uno de los mejores promedios de la promoción y por ello fue la persona que hizo la solicitud de títulos en el acto de entrega de los mismos.

En paralelo siguió estudiando medicina. Pero para Luis eso era demasiado fácil, así que cuando yo iba a renunciar a mi cargo como funcionario judicial, Luis tomo mi lugar y era uno de los funcionarios que más expedientes relacionaba en ese Juzgado. Además de este trabajo Luis tenía otros trabajos para costear sus gastos. ¡y seguía estudiando medicina, una de las carreras más difíciles! Todo porque era uno de sus sueños desde que era joven y para el eso era importante.

Otro sueño que Luis tenía y que me llevo a escribir este artículo era conocer Nueva York. Como ya dije antes, Luis es fanático al cine y siempre solíamos ir al cine a ver las películas nominadas al Oscar. Y como todo buen fanático del cine, conocer Nueva York, la sede de tantas películas y series era una fantasía. Pero una difícil de cumplir para un veinteañero que vive en un país como Venezuela y que viene de una familia que jamás solicito una visa americana en su vida.

Pero eso no lo desmotivo. E inteligente como es, ideo un plan.
Luis empezaría a estudiar inglés fuertemente para poderlo mejorar y cuando logro cierto nivel investigo como poder viajar a USA como Au Pair, y así lo hizo. Cumplió con todos los filtros posibles, trabajo hasta el cansancio para poder pagar su viaje y termino en USA.

Pero no termino en NY. Termino en la última frontera: Alaska.

Los detalles de cómo termino en el lugar más alejado del mundo no son importantes. Lo importante es que Luis se mató trabajando para poder cumplir su sueño y luego de trabajar durante tres meses en Alaska, emprendió un nuevo viaje, esta vez a Colorado y de ahí a Nueva Jersey y después de ahí: la gran manzana.
Ahí duro pocos días, pero le sirvió para cumplir su meta, una foto en el puente de Brooklyn, como en la película de Manhattan de Woody Allen.

No sé cuáles serán los próximos pasos que dará Luis. Lo que sé es que alguien como él tiene una de las historias más increíbles que conozco y todo a base de esfuerzo, constancia, perseverancia y sobre todo, la capacidad no olvidar sus sueños y luchar por ellos hasta las últimas instancias.

Kurohige once said that people's dreams never end and it is something I firmly believe in and to prove it I want to tell you the story of one of my best friends who fulfilled one of his wildest dreams: to see New York.

I met him in my second year of college. He had earned a scholarship for having excellent grades the year before. He was a tall guy who loved movies and distinguished himself for his incredible ability to analyze any situation.

Luis has fulfilled two dreams that because of their complexity I consider him someone worthy of admiration. Law school was not Luis' first choice. His main desire was to study medicine, and for that he had a perfect grade point average from the time he was in elementary school until he finished high school. But at that time, studying medicine meant moving to another state in the country and it was something he could not afford, so he decided to study law in the hope that someday they would open a medical school in our city and there he could begin his studies as a doctor.

However, although law was not his first choice, Luis felt like a fish in water, he was almost always the best in the class, the one who got the best grades and the one who stood out the most. And he stayed that way until one year away from finishing his law degree, destiny gave him what he wanted: to study medicine. Because of his abilities he managed to get a place at the University of the Andes and began to study medicine and law in parallel. And so he did, he finished law school being one of the best averages of the promotion and therefore was the person who made the request for titles in the act of delivery of the same.

At the same time he continued studying medicine. But for Luis that was too easy, so when I was going to resign from my position as a judicial officer, Luis took my place and was one of the officials who related more files in that Court. Besides this job Luis had other jobs to pay for his expenses, and he was still studying medicine, one of the most difficult careers! All because it was one of his dreams since he was young and it was important to him.

Another dream Luis had that led me to write this article was to see New York. As I said before, Luis is a movie fanatic and we always used to go to the movies to see the Oscar nominated films. And like any good movie fan, getting to know New York, the home of so many movies and series was a fantasy. But a difficult one to fulfill for a 20-year-old living in a country like Venezuela and coming from a family that never applied for an American visa in his life.

But that didn't discourage him. Smart as he is, he came up with a plan.
Luis would begin to study English hard to improve it and when he reached a certain level he investigated how he could travel to the USA as an Au Pair, and so he did. He fulfilled all the possible filters, worked to the point of exhaustion to be able to pay for his trip and ended up in the USA.

But she didn't end up in NY. She ended up in the last frontier: Alaska.

The details of how he ended up in the farthest place in the world are not important. What is important is that Luis worked himself to death to be able to fulfill his dream and after working for three months in Alaska, he undertook a new trip, this time to Colorado and from there to New Jersey and after that: the Big Apple.

He only lasted a few days there, but it was enough to accomplish his goal, a photo on the Brooklyn Bridge, like in Woody Allen's Manhattan movie.

I don't know what Luis' next steps will be. What I do know is that someone like him has one of the most incredible stories I know and all based on effort, perseverance, perseverance and above all, the ability to not forget his dreams and fight for them until the last instances.
